Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore opening a download, check where it came from, heed browser and operating-system warnings, and scan it with up-to-date security software. On Windows, you can also verify its digital signature. None of these checks can prove a file is harmless; if the source or results leave you unsure, do not run it.
1. Check the source and how the file reached you
Download software from the publisher’s official website or a trusted app store. Check the web address carefully: a familiar company name in a page title or link text does not establish that the domain belongs to that company. Be especially cautious with shortened links and files offered through unexpected emails or messages. CISA advises caution with attachments even when you expect them and they appear to come from someone you know. See its June 2023 malware-analysis report.

- Ask whether you meant to download this exact file from this exact source.
- If a person sent it, confirm through a separate trusted channel that they sent the attachment and intended you to open it.
- If the source is unclear, the site imitates a known publisher, or the download was unexpected, do not open it. Find the publisher’s official site independently instead.
2. Treat warnings as signals, not obstacles
Do not dismiss a browser or operating-system warning just to get a file open. In Windows, Attachment Manager can record information about a file’s origin and may warn you or prevent it from opening. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen uses reputation information to warn about reported or unfamiliar websites and downloads; a program with no established reputation may be new, but unfamiliarity is not a reason to bypass the warning. Microsoft describes these features in its Attachment Manager documentation and SmartScreen overview.
A warning is useful evidence to investigate, not a definitive malware verdict. The absence of a warning does not prove safety either. Verify the source and scan the file before deciding what to do.

3. Scan the file before opening or running it
Update your security software, then use it to scan the downloaded file before you open it or execute it. CISA’s June 2023 malware-analysis report recommends scanning internet downloads before execution. Keep your operating system and security software current as well.
A clean scan means the software did not detect a threat at that time; it does not establish that the file is harmless. Scanners can miss new, modified, or evasive threats. If a scan detects malware, follow your security software’s quarantine or removal guidance rather than opening the file.

4. On Windows, check the file’s digital signature
A digital signature can help identify who signed a file and whether its signature and certificate-chain information verify. Check that the signer is the publisher you expected. Microsoft’s Sigcheck utility can display signature details; its documentation is for version 2.91, published February 4, 2026: Microsoft Sysinternals Sigcheck.

5. Use online scanners without exposing private files
An online reputation lookup by file hash may provide information without sending the file itself, if the hash is already known to the service. Sigcheck supports VirusTotal hash queries and can upload a file when its upload option is explicitly enabled. Read the service’s terms before submitting anything: a file may contain personal, confidential, or work information.
VirusTotal documents a separate Private Scanning feature. Submissions and reports are restricted to the user’s organization and are deleted after a retention period usually set to 24 hours, but Private Scanning does not provide antivirus verdicts. See VirusTotal’s Private Scanning documentation. If the file is sensitive or belongs to work, follow your organization’s security procedures before sending it to any third-party service.

What each check can—and cannot—tell you
| Check | What it can indicate | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Source and context | Whether the route and publisher match what you intended | A familiar brand or sender guarantees the file is genuine |
| Browser or Windows reputation warning | Whether a site or file is reported, unfamiliar, or lacks established reputation | No warning means the file is harmless |
| Local security scan | Whether the current engine detects a known or suspected threat | A clean result means the file contains no malware |
| Digital signature | Signer and signature or certificate information | A signed file is necessarily benign |
| Online scanner | Additional reputation or analysis results | Agreement among services guarantees safety, or uploading is always private |
When in doubt, do not open it
If the source cannot be verified, a warning remains unexplained, or scan and signature results leave you uncertain, leave the file quarantined or delete it. If you still need the software, obtain a fresh copy from a verified source and scan that copy before use. Do not disable protection or bypass warnings just to install an unknown file. These are conservative steps consistent with CISA’s scan-before-execution and caution guidance and Microsoft’s description of warning behavior.
