With Ray-Ban Meta glasses, check the small light on the front of the frames: it is the outward-facing capture LED. Ray-Ban says it blinks when a photo is taken and stays solid white during video recording. That light is different from the inward-facing notification LED. These are product-specific signals, not a universal standard for smart glasses.
How can I tell if someone is recording me with smart glasses?
Look for a small light on the front of the glasses, near the camera. On Ray-Ban Meta, this is the capture LED intended to signal capture to people nearby. A brief blink indicates a photo; during video, Ray-Ban describes the light as solid white. Meta also describes it as continuing to blink during video, so the exact pattern may vary by model or software version.

Do not treat the light as definitive proof either way. It can be difficult to see in some conditions, and camera-assisted AI features may use the camera without activating the capture LED on newer models. A dark light therefore does not prove the camera is inactive, and a light can also signal startup rather than recording.

What does the light on Ray-Ban Meta glasses mean?
Ray-Ban identifies two different lights. The front-facing capture LED is the signal intended for people around the wearer. The inward-facing notification LED is visible to the wearer and can indicate power, voice, calls, or capture status. Seeing the internal light alone does not establish that the outward capture signal is on.

When might the capture light be hard to see?
TechRadar, summarizing findings from Hamburg’s Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, reported that the indicator was not easily visible in many environments, particularly outdoors and in direct sunlight, and noted a narrow viewing angle. This is a reported detectability limitation, not proof that every model or situation is equally difficult to see. TechRadar’s report
Do the same signals apply to every smart-glasses brand?
No industry-wide indicator behavior is established by the available product documentation. The details above concern Ray-Ban Meta, and Meta Ray-Ban Display has its own documented behavior: Ray-Ban says its capture LED indicates photos and videos captured for a gallery or streaming, while its FAQ describes a white notification LED staying on during video recording. What should you do if you are concerned?
- Ask the wearer whether they are taking a photo or recording video rather than relying only on a small indicator.
- If you do not want to be captured, say so clearly and ask them to stop or move away.
- Be especially cautious in sensitive locations or places where people expect privacy. Meta recommends asking permission before photographing or filming others and avoiding such places. Meta’s responsible-use guidance
- Consider local rules: device indicators do not replace privacy or recording laws. For example, the Associated Press reported that California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a proposal intended to clarify restrictions on secret recording with smart glasses; that vetoed proposal is not current California law. The question matters as these devices become more common: AP reported that more than 7 million Meta Ray-Ban glasses were sold in 2025, attributing the figure to the prior year’s sales in its 2026 report. It is a reported sales figure, not an independently audited estimate. Associated Press report
