To connect an image optimization tool to an AI agent with MCP, add an MCP server that exposes the image operation you need, choose a transport the agent host can reach, configure it in that host, and verify it with a low-impact call. The key decision is whether to use a hosted HTTP endpoint or run a local server process: that choice affects reachability and where image data is handled.
What MCP does in this setup
An MCP server publishes tool definitions and handles calls from an AI agent. The agent can then discover operations such as image compression or format conversion and call them through the server. MCP connects the agent to tools; it does not make every client use the same setup file or configuration syntax.

OpenAI documents three connection patterns for its Agents API: HTTP where OpenAI initiates the connection, HTTP where the session environment initiates it, and stdio, which runs a process in that environment. Choose based on where the server is reachable and where you want its process and image handling to occur. A private or local endpoint generally needs a connection originating in the environment that can access it; stdio requires a host that can start the process. See OpenAI’s MCP connection guide.

| Option | Hosted and local connection | Documented operations and considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Cleanor MCP | Hosted Streamable HTTP endpoint: https://mcp.cleanor.app/mcp. Local stdio invocation: npx -y @cleanor/mcp. |
The project describes a focused image tool set and reports 22 tools, 21 of them pure functions. It says optimize_image fetches the public image URL provided to it. Hosted image encoding uses its stated Cloudflare Images setup; local mode uses sharp. The project reports hosted limits of 120 requests per minute generally and 30 per minute for image optimization. These operational details have no publication date or independent benchmark validation in the cited project documentation. Project documentation. |
| imagemcpserver | Hosted endpoint: https://mcp.imagemcpserver.com/mcp. Also documents a local stdio process. | Its documented tools include compression, format conversion, generation, editing, background removal, upscaling, and SVG generation. The vendor lists compression and conversion at one credit each, background removal at eight, and upscaling at fifteen; generation cost varies by model. These are vendor-stated credit amounts, not a verified price comparison, and may change. Setup guide and tool list. |
Hosted HTTP
Use a hosted endpoint when the agent’s connection origin can reach it and the service’s image-data flow suits your needs. Confirm whether the server receives image bytes or fetches a URL, where processing happens, and what the provider retains. For example, Cleanor says its hosted optimization tool fetches a public image URL supplied by the caller; that describes a data flow, not a blanket privacy guarantee.
Local stdio
Use stdio when the client supports starting a local process and you want processing to happen in the environment running that process. For Cleanor, the documented invocation is npx -y @cleanor/mcp, and the project says local mode uses sharp. The host environment must have the executable, package dependencies, and any required credentials available. Local execution alone does not establish that no data leaves the environment; check the current implementation and configuration.

Configure the MCP server in your agent host
First confirm the server exposes the operation you need and inspect its current input and output schema. Then use the configuration format documented by your particular host. OpenAI’s Agents API examples are not drop-in configuration for every desktop, IDE, or other agent client.
- Pick a reachable transport. For HTTP, determine whether the endpoint is reachable from the connection origin used by the host. For stdio, verify the host supports launching MCP processes.
- Add the server using the host’s documented settings. In the Agents API, HTTP configuration specifies the MCP transport and server URL. Stdio configuration specifies a command and an existing absolute working directory; install the server and dependencies in that environment first. Consult OpenAI’s configuration guidance for those patterns.
- Provide credentials through the host’s supported secret mechanism. OpenAI’s guide covers credential options for HTTP and stdio and advises keeping secrets out of reusable agent definitions and logs. Do not use example placeholder keys as production credentials.
- Restrict available tools where possible. Use an allowlist if the host supports one, exposing only the image operations the agent needs.
- Initialize or restart the client. Tool discovery may happen at startup. imagemcpserver’s setup guide specifically directs users to restart the client so tools are read.
- Verify with a low-impact call. Inspect the returned result and confirm the expected operation and output. imagemcpserver suggests its free
get_user_infotool as a connection check; that check is specific to its service.
For imagemcpserver clients that accept an mcpServers block, the vendor setup guide shows a mcp-remote bridge, an API key in a header, and a local configuration that passes the key through an environment variable. Follow the current guide and your client’s own instructions for exact syntax and secret storage rather than copying a configuration blindly: imagemcpserver setup guide.

Check the image-data and credential boundary
An MCP server can receive the inputs supplied to its tools. A remote image operation may involve sending image bytes to a service or having that service fetch an image URL. Before using private images, establish what data crosses the boundary, where processing occurs, what the process or service can access, and what it retains. Review the provider’s current privacy and deployment details; vendor descriptions are not a substitute for your own requirements review.
- Prefer a local deployment only when its actual data flow meets your privacy needs.
- Do not pass confidential image URLs to a service unless you have confirmed how it handles them.
- Keep credentials out of reusable agent definitions and logs, and limit tool access to what is necessary.
- Check service limits, account balance, and any credit costs before running repeated or costly operations.
Troubleshoot connection and tool-call failures
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The server does not initialize | Check that the endpoint is reachable from the configured connection origin; for stdio, verify the executable, installed dependencies, and absolute working directory. Confirm authentication fields match the host and server configuration. |
| The connection starts but no tools appear | Validate the client’s configuration syntax and restart or reinitialize it so it can discover tools. imagemcpserver documents startup-time discovery. |
| Tools appear, but calls fail | Inspect authentication, the tool’s input schema, service-specific rate limits, and account or credit balance. Confirm that the image URL or image input is accessible to the server. |
How to choose between the examples
There is no universal best image MCP server in the available documentation. Match the deployment and tool set to the task, then verify the provider’s current behavior and terms.
Quick Recap
- Data location: establish whether images are processed locally, sent as bytes, or fetched by a hosted server from a URL.
- Transport compatibility: make sure the agent host supports the server’s HTTP or stdio option and can reach it from the right environment.
- Operation coverage: compare the actual tools and schemas with your needs, such as compression, conversion, or broader image creation and editing.
- Credentials and limits: review secret handling, rate limits, and any vendor-stated credit costs, which may change.
- Maintenance: account for installing dependencies and maintaining a local process versus relying on a hosted endpoint.
