How to Tell When a Lazy-Loaded Page Is Ready for a Screenshot

There is no universal signal for a fully rendered lazy-loaded page. Combine a navigation checkpoint with page-specific content, image, and layout checks before capture.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal browser event that proves a lazy-loaded page is fully rendered. Treat a page as ready when the specific content your capture needs has appeared, its required images have loaded, and the relevant layout has stopped changing. Use a navigation event as an initial checkpoint, then verify the page-specific state and, for full-page captures, trigger below-the-fold loading before taking the screenshot.

Why a navigation event is not enough

In Playwright, page.goto() waits for the page’s load event by default. That event includes dependent resources such as stylesheets, scripts, iframes, and images, but it cannot guarantee that content loaded later by application code—or only after scrolling—has appeared. See Playwright’s navigation guidance.

Network-idle waits have a similar limit. Playwright defines networkidle as no network connections for at least 500 ms, but marks it discouraged as a general testing readiness condition and recommends web assertions for readiness instead. Persistent connections or polling may prevent idleness; conversely, a quiet network does not prove that delayed content will not appear. See the Playwright Page API.

Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates networkidle2 as a navigation option. That can be useful for some pages, but it is an example rather than a universal guarantee that lazy content or application state is complete. See Puppeteer’s screenshot guide.

Choose a readiness condition that matches the capture

Decide what the screenshot must contain, then wait for evidence of that state. A navigation milestone describes the browser’s progress; a page-specific condition checks the content the capture actually needs.

Capture goal Useful readiness condition Important caveat
A visible page section The target container or heading is visible and any required loading indicator is gone. Visibility alone may not prove that images inside the section have finished loading.
Search results or a data-driven view The result list reaches the expected application state, such as a known count or an explicit ready marker. Choose a condition that matches the site; a generic delay cannot establish that the intended results arrived.
A full-page image including offscreen content Trigger loading across the relevant page regions, then verify the required images and content. Scrolling can trigger more work and affect sticky headers, animations, or viewport-dependent layouts.

Playwright recommends web-first assertions to assess readiness. Use a locator or retrying assertion for a meaningful element or state rather than relying only on elapsed time. See Playwright PageAssertions and the Page API.

Handle below-the-fold content before a full-page capture

Images marked for browser-level lazy loading may not start loading until their position is known and they approach the viewport. Chrome’s guidance describes triggering loading as images near visibility; it also says to use loading="lazy" only for images outside the initial viewport. See Chrome’s browser-level image lazy-loading guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Decide whether the capture is viewport-only or full-page. For a viewport screenshot, focus on the visible region. For a full-page capture, identify which lower sections must appear.
  2. Scroll through the relevant regions. This can trigger viewport-based image loading. A site with a custom JavaScript loader may require its own documented trigger or application-specific handling.
  3. Check the content and images that matter. For each required image, a practical browser-side check is whether it has finished loading and has a usable natural size. This is an implementation technique, not a guarantee that every page’s visuals are complete.
  4. Check for a stable state, then capture. Wait for known loading indicators to disappear or for the relevant region to stop changing. This settling check is an operational recommendation, not a browser event that proves universal completeness.

Chrome’s guidance addresses browser-level image lazy loading; it does not establish how a particular site’s custom loader, virtualized list, iframe, background image, canvas, video, or user-triggered content behaves. Define a suitable condition for those separately.

Implement the checks in Playwright

This JavaScript example waits for the main content, scrolls in increments to prompt below-the-fold loading, checks ordinary image elements for completion, and then takes a full-page screenshot. Replace the selectors and success condition with ones that describe the page you are capturing.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });

  try {
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load', timeout: 60000 });

    // Use a meaningful page-specific condition, not just navigation completion.
    await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30000 });
    await page.locator('[data-page-ready="true"]').waitFor({ state: 'attached', timeout: 30000 });

    // Prompt viewport-triggered lazy loading down the page.
    await page.evaluate(async () => {
      const step = Math.max(300, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8));
      for (let y = 0; y < document.documentElement.scrollHeight; y += step) {
        window.scrollTo(0, y);
        await new Promise(resolve => requestAnimationFrame(() => requestAnimationFrame(resolve)));
      }
      window.scrollTo(0, 0);
    });

    // Check ordinary <img> elements. Adapt this for the page's actual content.
    await page.waitForFunction(() =>
      [...document.images].every(img => img.complete && img.naturalWidth > 0),
      { timeout: 30000 }
    );

    // Optional settling buffer after meaningful conditions have passed.
    await page.waitForTimeout(250);
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

The marker [data-page-ready="true"] is an example, not a standard attribute. If the site has no explicit marker, wait for a result list, heading, or other stable state that demonstrates the desired content has appeared. The image check above intentionally fails if any image element has no usable natural size; if broken or optional images are acceptable, narrow the check to the images required by the capture.

Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows navigation using networkidle2. You can use it as an initial checkpoint and still add a page-specific condition and lazy-loading checks for the content your capture needs.

    );
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

The networkidle2 option is not proof of visual completeness. Keep the page-specific checks, and adapt the image and scrolling logic to the site.

Choose the trigger strategy for the screenshot you need

Viewport screenshot

If only the current viewport matters, avoid scrolling the whole page unnecessarily. Wait for the visible target content and its required assets. Scrolling can alter sticky elements or trigger content that is irrelevant to the capture.

Full-page screenshot

For below-the-fold images, scrolling through relevant regions can give browser-level lazy loading a chance to run. This adds loading time and may change page behavior. A full-page screenshot can also interact differently with fixed or sticky elements than a viewport capture, so use the same browser, viewport, and scroll procedure when repeatability matters.

Pages with custom or non-image content

Native image checks do not cover CSS background images, canvas, video frames, virtualized lists, embedded frames, or content that requires a user action. Identify the page’s loading mechanism and use a corresponding signal—for example, the application’s ready state or a specific element becoming available. The sources do not establish one generic check for these cases.

Troubleshoot incomplete or unreliable captures

  • The screenshot is missing content below the fold: the content may not have been requested until it approached the viewport. Scroll through the relevant sections or use the site’s documented lazy-loader trigger, then verify the target content before capture.
  • The page passes load but still looks incomplete: load is an initial resource milestone, not a guarantee that later application work has finished. Add a locator or assertion for the actual content state.
  • networkidle or networkidle2 times out: a site may keep connections open or poll continuously. Use a page-specific readiness condition rather than making network quiet the sole requirement.
  • The image check never passes: inspect whether a required image failed, whether the page has images that are intentionally empty or optional, or whether the relevant content is not represented by ordinary <img> elements. Narrow the check or add a suitable test for that content type.
  • Scrolling changes the page or causes more loading: reduce scrolling to the regions needed for the capture and account for sticky headers, animation, and viewport-sensitive layouts. A viewport-only image may not need any scrolling.
  • A fixed sleep works sometimes but not consistently: network and application timing vary. Use the sleep only as a small buffer after meaningful content and asset checks, not as the readiness test itself.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its full-page capture option loads lazy images. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot, and you can turn each step off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

For a WebP screenshot of a page, use this cURL request; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API options:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Frequently Asked Questions

Does waiting for network idle prove that a lazy-loaded page is complete?

No. It describes network activity, not whether the exact content needed for a screenshot has appeared.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I scroll before every screenshot?

No. Scroll when below-the-fold content belongs in the capture and needs a viewport trigger; a viewport-only capture may not need it.
