Use two monitors, not one: YouTube Live Control Room shows whether YouTube is receiving and processing your stream correctly, while your encoder shows whether it can keep sending data to YouTube. Then check the public watch page separately. A green status in either dashboard is not proof that every viewer has uninterrupted playback.

YouTube says its Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check for errors in the stream being sent to YouTube. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Those checks cover different legs of the operation.

Set up a practical 24/7 monitoring routine
1. Test the complete setup before relying on it
Run a test with representative motion and audio, then check stream health while it is running. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring health during the event. Confirm the event appears in Live Control Room preview, and check that it is accessible from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device. For encoder streams, YouTube also recommends checking that the local archive is growing.

2. Observe YouTube’s health messages
Keep Live Control Room open or arrange for an operator to observe it. Read each error message and its timestamp rather than relying only on the color indicator. YouTube characterizes red errors as critical and yellow errors as possible quality degradation. Follow the instruction shown for the specific error.

3. Observe encoder output and dropped frames
In OBS, monitor whether the output is active or reconnecting and watch the network dropped-frame count. This count helps identify trouble sending data to the ingest server; it does not measure the playback path between YouTube and each viewer. A rising count or disconnection calls for a connection and bitrate investigation.
4. Test backup recovery deliberately
If you use a backup encoder, schedule a controlled test: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet connection, then observe whether the player rolls over to the backup. YouTube advises matching primary and backup stream settings. Do not treat the presence of a configured backup as proof that viewers will switch successfully until you have observed a test.

5. Respond to rising network drops
- Check that stable upload capacity can sustain the configured bitrate.
- If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, try wired networking; OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming.
- Check whether VPN, security, or network-optimization software is interfering, and review network drivers.
- Inspect the modem, router, Ethernet cable, and other network hardware for faults.
- OBS notes that dynamic bitrate can reduce dropped frames by lowering quality, but it does not fix an unstable connection.
6. Respond to YouTube configuration errors
Use the message and timestamp in Live Control Room to identify the issue, then verify the codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and—if applicable—matching primary and backup settings against YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency for RTMP/RTMPS and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps is 14 Mbps; that is an encoder-setting recommendation, not a guarantee of reliability.
Troubleshoot by symptom
OBS shows network dropped frames or disconnects
OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as causes. Check upload capacity, configured bitrate, Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, VPN or security interference, network utility software, drivers, and suspect cabling or equipment. Lowering bitrate may help if the connection cannot sustain the current setting, but it trades image quality for a more manageable send rate.

YouTube reports a stream-health error
Read the specific dashboard text and timestamp. YouTube’s documented error categories include incorrect stream format, bitrate, audio or video settings, keyframe frequency, and mismatched backup streams. Correct the indicated setting using YouTube’s guidance, then confirm health again.
Viewers report buffering but OBS shows few or no drops
Low encoder drops do not rule out playback problems. OBS notes that viewers’ devices, locations, and network conditions differ, and buffering can occur without dropped frames. Check the public playback experience on another device and connection; do not infer universal viewer quality from the encoder counter.

The stream goes down despite a configured backup
Run a controlled failover test and observe the player. If rollover fails, check that primary and backup settings match and investigate the specific YouTube health message. A backup configuration alone does not establish that recovery is working.
What these checks cannot guarantee
YouTube’s and OBS’s documented interfaces explain stream health and sender behavior, but they do not specify a universal polling cadence, guaranteed alerting method, or end-to-end third-party probe for unattended 24/7 operations. Manual watch-page checks are useful spot checks, not continuous verification for every viewer. Keep an independent way to view the public stream and define who will respond to dashboard errors or encoder reconnects.
