To judge a local IMAX screening, check the specific theater and showing: its projection system, any disclosed screen or auditorium details, and whether that film is listed in an expanded 1.43:1 presentation. The IMAX name alone does not tell you the screen size or the image shape you will see.
What “LieMAX” means—and what it doesn’t
Moviegoers use “LieMAX” informally, often pejoratively, for IMAX multiplex auditoriums they consider smaller or less immersive than traditional large-format venues. It is not an official IMAX certification or technical tier. IMAX’s materials do not establish a “real versus fake” classification or a universal screen-size cutoff for the label.

Because the term has no objective threshold, it is more useful to compare the facts a theater or film listing actually provides than to decide from the nickname alone.
How to tell what your local IMAX will show
- Check the exact film and screening. Look for a film-specific IMAX page naming participating theaters and describing the presentation. Then check the exhibitor’s current listing for your showtime and format; schedules and technical configurations can change.
- Identify the projection system. See whether the show is listed as IMAX 70mm Film, IMAX with Laser, or another digital IMAX presentation. These labels describe different projection approaches, not a complete verdict on the auditorium.
- Look for the film’s image shape. A listing may specify an expanded 1.43:1 presentation. Do not infer that ratio from “IMAX,” “70mm,” or “Laser” alone: the film and its presentation determine the image shown.
- Compare the practical details. Location, showtime, available seats, seat position, and your own preferences may matter more than a format label.
For example, IMAX’s 2025 One Battle After Another announcement listed participating IMAX 70mm Film and IMAX with Laser theaters for a 1.43:1 presentation, while directing moviegoers to check current listings with the exhibitor: IMAX’s film announcement.

IMAX 70mm, IMAX with Laser, and digital IMAX
| Label | What it tells you | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| IMAX 70mm Film | Film projection using the IMAX 70mm format, commonly designated 15/70. | The screen’s size, or whether a particular showing uses a 1.43:1 image. |
| IMAX with Laser | A digital laser projection system. In its 2025 announcement with Cinemark, IMAX described its laser system as 4K and named 70mm film systems separately. | The screen’s size, or the aspect ratio used for every film shown there. |
| Digital IMAX | A broad label that may cover different digital presentations. | The exact projector, screen configuration, or image shape without further details. |
IMAX’s announcement about its Cinemark partnership distinguishes its 4K laser projection system from 70mm film systems: IMAX and Cinemark’s announcement. The distinction matters, but it does not rank every auditorium or guarantee a particular film’s image ratio.
“Digital IMAX” can also be imprecise. In an Associated Press interview, filmmaker Christopher Nolan said the term may refer to laser projection or a retrofitted screen. His explanation underscores why a generic digital label may not answer every equipment or screen question; it is not a complete inventory of current theater configurations.

Why 1.43:1 is useful—but not a universal test
Aspect ratio describes the shape of the projected image, not the projection medium. A 1.43:1 presentation is a useful clue when you want to see a film in an expanded image, but it is not a universal requirement for an IMAX screening. IMAX’s film-specific announcement listed both 70mm Film and Laser venues for its 1.43:1 presentation.

What older IMAX labels can—and can’t—tell you
Terms such as GT, SR, MPX, and dome appear in historical descriptions of IMAX systems. IMAX’s annual report describes system configurations and its 15-perforation 70mm format, but that historical material is not a current directory of theater equipment. It cannot confirm what a particular venue has today: IMAX’s 2013 annual report.
Likewise, terms such as “GT IMAX,” “NON-GT IMAX,” and “xenon IMAX” may appear in fan discussions, but reader shorthand is not a substitute for current theater-specific information. Ask the exhibitor or consult the film’s official listing when a detail matters.

How to choose between two nearby IMAX screenings
- Prefer the showing explicitly listed for the film’s expanded presentation if seeing that image is your priority.
- Compare the projection-system labels when both theaters disclose them, but do not treat either label as proof of screen size or image ratio.
- Use disclosed screen or auditorium specifications as additional context, not as a standalone “real IMAX” test.
- Choose based on the combination of presentation, showtime, seats, location, and personal preference.
No universal screen-size threshold or formal “LieMAX” test is established by the cited IMAX materials. A precise answer about a specific venue depends on current information for that theater and film.
