How to Tell Water Ice From Dust in Mars Orbiter Data

Mars orbiter colors are not a universal ice-or-dust key. Learn how to assess CRISM spectra, THEMIS bands, atmospheric haze, and dust-masked frost.

You cannot reliably identify water ice from a Mars orbiter image by its displayed color alone. First identify the instrument and product, then examine calibrated, wavelength-resolved measurements and check whether the signal could come from atmospheric haze, surface frost, dust-mixed ice, or dust hiding the ground. CRISM reflectance spectra and THEMIS visible and thermal-infrared images provide different kinds of evidence; neither supplies a universal color key or a guaranteed verdict for every scene.

Start with the instrument and data product

“Mars orbiter data” can mean measurements that do not directly answer the same question. CRISM targeted observations provide reflected sunlight across wavelengths, while THEMIS has separate visible and thermal-infrared imaging systems. A rendered browse image is useful for locating patterns, but it is not a substitute for knowing what was measured and how the product was processed.

Instrument or product What it measures Useful detail Interpretive limit
CRISM MTRDR Map-projected reflectance cubes from targeted observations, with wavelength information and associated summary, browse, and processing products. Use the reflectance spectrum across wavelengths rather than relying on a single displayed color or feature. [NASA PDS CRISM MTRDR description] Processing corrects photometric, atmospheric, and instrumental effects, but does not remove all scattering by dust and ice aerosols.
THEMIS visible Five visible bands centered at 0.425, 0.540, 0.654, 0.749, and 0.860 μm. 19 m/pixel image resolution, according to the Arizona State University Mars Space Flight Facility FAQ. Visible appearance can be altered by dust, frost mixtures, and display processing.
THEMIS thermal infrared Ten thermal-infrared bands centered at 6.78 μm (two filters), 7.93, 8.56, 9.35, 10.21, 11.04, 11.79, 12.57, and 14.88 μm. 100 m/pixel image resolution, according to the same FAQ. Water and ice absorb in these infrared bands. [ASU THEMIS instrument FAQ] Surface dust can mask underlying thermal-infrared signatures; the 14.88 μm band cannot see the surface because the Martian atmosphere is opaque at that wavelength.

Why image color is not a composition test

False-color images assign visible display colors to selected bands or combinations of bands. Those colors help reveal contrasts, but blue, red, or orange does not have one universal meaning across Mars data products.

For example, NASA’s preliminary “DCS Color near Mare Cimmerium” THEMIS image uses a decorrelation stretch to emphasize differences among three bands. In that particular scene, green and blue regions represent dust, while faint blue areas may be thin water-ice clouds. NASA explicitly described the release as not yet radiometrically or geometrically calibrated, so its color assignments should not be carried over as a general key. A different preliminary, uncalibrated THEMIS false-color product, “Ice Surfaces In False Color,” shows ice or frost as bright blue and dust-mantled ice as red or orange. The contrast may reflect fresher, less dust-covered ice near the top of the deposit. That interpretation belongs to that product and scene, not every image with similar colors. [NASA: Ice Surfaces In False Color]

How to assess a CRISM water-ice signal

  1. Open the reflectance cube and its product information. Confirm that the observation is a CRISM MTRDR or another identified product, and check its wavelength and processing information. A browse or summary image alone does not show the full spectral evidence.
  2. Inspect spectral behavior across wavelengths. Evaluate the spectrum as a whole rather than calling ice from one weak feature. Weak absorptions near 1500 and 2000 nm can be produced by thin atmospheric water-ice haze, according to the PDS product description. Their presence alone does not establish exposed surface ice. [NASA PDS CRISM MTRDR description]
  3. Check aerosol and scene conditions. CRISM processing normalizes aerosol scattering to a within-scene geometry rather than removing it completely. Aerosol loads can differ between overlapping observations, and remaining scattering is strongest at shorter wavelengths and can affect iron-mineral absorptions.
  4. Read archive thresholds as processing rules, not classification cutoffs. The cited PDS archive description gives example exclusion thresholds of dust opacity τ > 1.39 and ice opacity τ > 0.28 for high-opacity scenes. Those are archive-specific thresholds; they are not universal rules for deciding whether a pixel contains dust or water ice.
  5. Describe only what the evidence identifies. If the spectrum supports an ice-related signal but does not distinguish atmospheric haze from surface material, or water ice from another frost, state that limitation rather than upgrading the finding to confirmed surface water ice.

What THEMIS can—and cannot—show through dust

THEMIS infrared measurements can reveal effects associated with water or ice that may not be obvious in visible images. But a missing infrared signature is not proof that ice is absent: according to the ASU instrument FAQ, a surface dust layer of about 100 μm (0.1 mm) can obscure underlying thermal-infrared signatures. THEMIS can see through a small amount of atmospheric dust, but that does not mean it sees through dust covering the surface. [ASU THEMIS instrument FAQ]

Use visible and infrared observations together when available, while keeping their different spatial resolutions and sensitivities in mind. A visible image may show surface patterns at finer pixel scale; the infrared image measures different wavelengths at coarser resolution. Do not treat a color contrast in the visible product as equivalent to an infrared absorption, or assume that a feature in one data type must appear the same way in the other.

Distinguish surface frost from atmospheric aerosols

An ice-related observation need not be ice on the ground. CRISM limb spectra have been used to characterize mesospheric aerosol composition and particle properties across 0.4–4.0 μm; that is an atmospheric measurement, not a map of surface ice. [NASA Technical Reports Server, 2019]

THEMIS atmospheric algorithms likewise address atmospheric dust and ice aerosols. Keep that task separate from mapping surface material in a reflectance cube: atmospheric retrievals estimate properties of aerosols, whereas a surface interpretation asks what the ground contributes to the observed signal. Do not assume every frost signal is water ice

A useful caution comes from a dawn frost case reported by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on May 5, 2022. Infrared observations revealed frost that was largely carbon-dioxide frost; the researchers proposed that fine dust mixed into it helped obscure it in visible imagery. The case shows why infrared and visible context can complement each other, but it does not establish that a similar-looking feature elsewhere is water ice. A concise checklist for interpreting a scene

  • Name the instrument and product type: for example, CRISM reflectance cube, THEMIS visible image, or THEMIS thermal-infrared image.
  • Check calibration and processing status before interpreting displayed colors or comparing observations.
  • For CRISM, examine the spectrum and consider whether weak features near 1.5 or 2.0 μm could be atmospheric water-ice haze.
  • Consider varying atmospheric aerosol loads and whether surface dust could mask a thermal-infrared signal.
  • Separate atmospheric aerosol evidence from surface frost or ice evidence.
  • Call a signal water ice only when the evidence identifies water ice; otherwise use the narrower supported description, such as ice-related absorption, frost, or dust-mixed frost.

There is no established head-to-head accuracy score showing CRISM or THEMIS to be universally better at classifying a scene as water ice or dust. A case-level conclusion depends on the actual observation, its bands or spectrum, product version, geometry, and atmospheric context.
