You do not need a vintage computer, GPU, ASIC, or high-performance processor to participate in RustChain’s Proof of Antiquity network, according to RustChain. Its stated minimum is a real computer with any CPU, at least 32 MB of RAM, an internet connection, and a supported operating system. Older and rarer hardware is optional; the project says its reward weighting favors some older systems.
RustChain’s stated minimum hardware
RustChain’s overview lists these minimums. They are project-published requirements, not a guarantee that every hardware and software combination will work without adjustments.

| Requirement | RustChain’s published minimum |
|---|---|
| Processor | Any CPU |
| Memory | At least 32 MB of RAM |
| Connectivity | Internet connection |
| Operating system | Linux, macOS, Windows, or BSD |
| Python | Python 2.3+ for legacy routes or Python 3.6+ for modern routes |
RustChain says a GPU, ASIC, or fast computer is not needed. For the current installation steps and architecture-specific details, consult the RustChain overview and its official mining guide before setting up a machine; requirements and instructions can change.

No. RustChain lists modern processors alongside vintage and less common architectures. Its FAQ names PowerPC G3/G4/G5, IBM POWER8, 68K Macs, SPARC, MIPS, RISC-V, Cell BE, retro x86, and modern CPUs. The project’s stated distinction is physical versus virtual hardware: it says hardware attestation is intended to establish that a miner is a real machine, and that virtual machines and emulators are detected and earn effectively nothing. Those are RustChain’s claims, not an independent security assessment.

- This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The Refurbishing Process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box. Only select sellers who maintain a high-performance bar may offer Certified Refurbished products on Amazon.com.
- HP 600G1 Intel I5 Quad-Core 3.2 GHz Processor.
- What's Inside: 8GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, DVD Optical Drive.
- Includes: USB Keyboard and Mouse, Microsoft office 30 days free trail.
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro 64 Bit-Multi-Language Supports English/Spanish/French.
If you already own a working physical computer, check whether RustChain documents a miner route for its architecture before shopping for anything. A vintage machine may be interesting if you want to participate with older hardware, but it is not a stated prerequisite.
How the miner route varies by machine
RustChain describes different setup paths for different hardware, so meeting the basic specifications does not necessarily mean every device can use the same installer.

- Modern hardware: The guide describes a Python miner for Linux, macOS, and modern hardware.
- Vintage x86: RustChain documents a dedicated vintage x86 miner.
- PowerPC Macs: A separate route is described. The guide says some PowerPC Macs too old to use modern TLS directly may need to attest through a local proxy on the same LAN.
That extra compatibility work matters when considering an older computer: the project documents a route, but does not promise that every used machine will work out of the box.

RustChain’s stated rationale for Proof of Antiquity is that hardware age and rarity matter more than raw computing speed. Its explainer says, “The older and rarer the silicon, the higher the reward.” The project’s overview gives these example multipliers:

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
| Hardware example | RustChain-published multiplier |
|---|---|
| PowerBook G4 / Power Mac G4 | 2.50x |
| Modern x86_64 | 0.80x |
RustChain’s overview did not state a publication year for this multiplier table. Treat these as the project’s published reward weights, not independently verified current values or estimates of token income. A multiplier is not a promise of earnings or profit: actual rewards depend on network rules and conditions.
What participation and attestation involve
RustChain describes participation as installing the miner, associating a wallet identifier, and submitting hardware-fingerprint data to an attestation node. Its guide says attestations are refreshed in a loop and remain valid for 24 hours. Check the current official guide for the live process rather than relying on an old setup description.

The project says its fingerprinting can involve clock skew and oscillator drift, cache-timing curves, SIMD identity, thermal-drift entropy, instruction-path jitter, and anti-emulation checks. These are descriptions of RustChain’s approach; they do not establish that the checks are secure against every form of spoofing or attack.

Choosing between a modern and vintage machine
Compare candidate computers by compatibility and practical upkeep, not processor speed alone. RustChain’s published claims do not quantify electricity use, repair costs, or reliability, so those costs need to be assessed for the particular computer.
- Physical hardware: The project says real hardware is required and that virtual machines and emulators are de-rewarded.
- Architecture and software path: Confirm that RustChain documents a miner route for the machine’s processor family and operating system.
- Compatibility work: Account for any legacy software needs or, for some old PowerPC Macs, a local proxy on the same network.
- Reward weighting: Compare only against RustChain’s published multiplier information; do not translate it into guaranteed income.
- Ownership and upkeep: An existing, working computer may be more practical than buying and maintaining an older system solely to participate.
A PowerBook G4 is one example of hardware RustChain lists, but buying one is optional. Its suitability depends on the individual machine and the current PowerPC setup route.
