Webcams vary: some have built-in microphones, while others do not. Check the specifications for your exact model, then look for its microphone in your computer’s audio input list and make a short test recording. A missing input alone does not prove the webcam lacks a microphone; it can also indicate a connection, detection, permission, or device-status problem.
Check the webcam’s exact model and specifications
Find the brand and model number on the webcam, its packaging, a purchase record, or your computer’s connected-device list. Search the manufacturer’s official specifications for terms such as “microphone,” “built-in mic,” or “audio.” Video capability by itself does not establish that a webcam has a microphone.

See whether the computer detects a webcam microphone
Connect the webcam, then open your operating system’s sound or audio input settings. Look for an input named after the webcam or identified as its microphone or audio device. The exact label and menu path vary by operating-system version.

Software detection and hardware specifications answer different questions. The manufacturer’s specification tells you whether that model is supposed to include a microphone; the input list tells you whether the computer currently detects an audio device.
Make a short recording to confirm it works
- Choose the webcam microphone in the operating system’s input settings or in the calling or recording app you plan to use.
- Record a few seconds of speech, then play it back and listen for clear audio.
- If the recording is silent or uses another microphone, check the selected input in both the system settings and the app. Apps may have their own input selection.
Logitech’s webcam audio troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the webcam is detected, selecting its microphone, and making a test recording.

If the microphone does not appear
Before deciding the webcam has no microphone, work through these checks:

- Connection: Reconnect the webcam and try a known-good USB port. If you use an adapter, check that it is connected as intended.
- Device detection: Confirm that the computer recognizes the webcam. Logitech’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking device and driver status.
- Selected input: Recheck the operating system’s audio input list and the input chosen in your calling or recording app.
- Microphone access: Review the operating system’s privacy controls to ensure microphone access is allowed for the app. In Windows, Microsoft explains the controls for camera and microphone permissions, including desktop-app access.
- Device or driver status: Inspect the system’s device settings for warnings or status problems. Menu names and steps differ across operating-system versions; Logitech’s illustrated instructions include older Windows versions, so use current system menus rather than assuming those legacy paths still apply.
A built-in microphone is not a quality guarantee
Presence, pickup distance, and sound quality are separate considerations. Logitech specifies that the BRIO has a dual omni-directional built-in microphone with a range of up to 1.2 m. That figure is a manufacturer specification for that product, not a general expectation for webcams. When choosing a model, check its published microphone details against your room, noise level, and speaking distance; do not assume a webcam mic will perform like a dedicated headset or standalone microphone.
