What Photo stacks do—and what they do not do
Google defines similar photos as “Nearly identical photos of the same subject that were taken together within a short time frame.” Photo stacks collect those images in the Photos view, where a selected image acts as the stack’s top pick. Tap a stack to see its other photos, either by scrolling through the filmstrip or opening the items in a grid. You can also change the top pick. Google Photos Help: Organise your Photos view

This is a way to reduce visual clutter while reviewing bursts of similar frames—not a tool that chooses the best images from an entire trip or automatically builds a vacation album. The grouped photos remain available, and Google says stacking does not change your available Google Account storage. To reclaim storage, you must take a separate deletion action.
Turn on Photo stacks on Android
Google’s documented setup instructions are for Android. They require backup to be on, and photos taken recently may need time before they appear in a stack.

- Tap More.
- Turn Stack similar photos on or off.

Review, share, or remove photos in a stack
Inspect and choose the top pick
Tap a stack to review its contents, then choose the image you want displayed as its top pick. That choice changes the stack’s cover image; it does not replace or remove the other shots.

Share a stack or add it to an album
When sharing or adding a stack to an album, Google Photos offers a choice between Selected items only and Includes photo stacks. Check that setting so you share the individual selected images or include the stack as intended.

These actions have different results. Unstacking makes the photos show separately; removing an image from a stack takes it out of the group without deleting it. Deleting is a separate action available through the Bin controls. Google warns that permanently deleted content cannot be recovered with Takeout, so review what you are deleting before confirming. Photo stacks versus Memories and Trip highlights
Google Photos has other ways to revisit vacation pictures, but they serve a different purpose from grouping look-alike frames.

For the specific chore of sorting through several nearly identical vacation shots, stacks address the clutter directly. For revisiting or sharing a curated trip story, Memories and Trip highlights are the separate features to look at.
