How to Tell If Your Router Has Been Compromised

Unexplained router settings are a reason to investigate, not proof of a hack. Learn what to check, how to secure the device, and when replacement is warranted.

Unexplained changes to your router’s settings—especially DNS servers, routes, administrator accounts, remote access, or logging—are reasons to investigate, not proof by themselves that someone hacked it. Check the settings against what you configured, verify the device’s firmware and support status, and secure it using the manufacturer’s instructions.

Why router changes deserve attention

A router sits between your home network and the internet, so unauthorized access can matter beyond the router itself. CISA calls a home wireless router “the primary entrance for cybercriminals to access all of your connected devices” in its 2019 consumer guidance.

That does not mean every outage, slow connection, or unfamiliar setting indicates an attack. Internet-provider changes, firmware updates, and ordinary configuration mistakes can also affect how a router behaves. Look for changes you cannot explain, then corroborate them where possible.

Settings to check for changes you did not make

Sign in through the router’s legitimate management interface—typically the maker’s app or its local admin page—and review the configuration. Menu names and available options vary by model.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • DNS servers: Check whether the router directs devices to DNS servers you did not select or that your ISP or administrator cannot explain.
  • Routes: Look for unfamiliar routing entries that could redirect network traffic.
  • Administrator access: Review management accounts and remove or investigate accounts you did not create.
  • Remote management and tunnels: Check whether remote administration or network tunnels have been enabled without your authorization.
  • Traffic capture and logs: Look for unexpected traffic-capture settings or logs that have been altered, disabled, or cleared.

CISA’s September 2025 advisory on network-infrastructure compromise describes these kinds of unauthorized configuration changes and techniques. Its focus is state-sponsored activity against telecommunications and other networks; it does not establish that these incidents are common in home routers.

How to investigate without jumping to a conclusion

  1. Record unfamiliar settings. If practical, note or photograph what you found before changing it. Compare it with settings you chose, any records you have, and information from your ISP or network administrator.
  2. Check the exact model and firmware. Find the router’s model and installed firmware version in its management interface, then check the manufacturer’s support page for that specific model. Install only an update the maker supports. Compare firmware integrity only if the manufacturer provides a reliable method.
  3. Review access and passwords. Change the router administrator password to a unique one. CISA’s consumer guidance advises changing factory-set credentials; US-CERT’s older small-office and home-router guide likewise says to change the default login username and password.
  4. Assess Wi-Fi credentials separately. Change the Wi-Fi password if you have reason to think it was exposed. The administrator password and Wi-Fi password control different kinds of access.
  5. Get model-specific recovery advice if concerns remain. Contact your ISP or the router maker for reset and recovery steps. Exact menus and safe recovery procedures differ by device, so follow current instructions for your model rather than assuming one reset process fits all routers.

Consumer guidance from CISA and US-CERT cited here dates to 2019 and 2011. It provides baseline advice, but current manufacturer instructions should guide firmware installation and device-specific recovery.

When to replace the router

Check whether the manufacturer still provides security updates for your exact model. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance recommends replacing devices that no longer receive security support. A suspicious symptom alone is not a reason to buy a new router; replacement is appropriate when support has ended or the manufacturer or ISP advises it.

What the signs can—and cannot—tell you

An unfamiliar DNS server, account, route, tunnel, or logging change is a concrete reason to investigate. It is not, on its own, a diagnosis of compromise. A configuration change you can verify as an ISP action, an authorized update, or your own earlier choice has a different explanation. If you cannot account for a change, secure the router and ask the ISP or manufacturer to help verify it.
