Best Alternatives to the Sonos Beam Ultra for Different Budgets and Setups

The best alternative to the Sonos Beam Ultra depends on what you want to change: spend less, keep a compact one-bar setup, add stronger bass with a subwoofer, or get physical rear speakers. Consider the Sony HT-S2000 for a lower-cost standalone bar, the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) or Bose Smart Soundbar for a compact setup, and the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7 + S or JBL Bar 1300MK2 when extra hardware matters more than simplicity. Prices and bundles vary by country and over time, so compare the exact package—not just the bar—before buying.

How to choose an alternative

Start with the trade-off you are willing to make. A single bar is easier to place and set up, but it cannot provide the same physical bass as a separate subwoofer or the same rear-speaker placement as a system with dedicated surrounds. A bundled system can sound bigger, but it takes more space and raises the total cost.

  • Room and footprint: Check the bar’s width against your TV stand and the available space below the screen. A compact bar suits a smaller room or a setup where extra speakers are impractical.
  • Bass: If you want stronger low-frequency impact, compare a package that includes a subwoofer rather than expecting a slim standalone bar to deliver the same effect.
  • Surround and height effects: Distinguish virtual Atmos processing from systems with physical rear or up-firing speakers. Channel figures describe a product configuration; they are not a guarantee of how immersive it will sound in your room.
  • Connections and ecosystem: Check whether you need Wi-Fi and multiroom playback, or whether Bluetooth is enough. Console owners should verify HDMI passthrough features such as 4K at 120Hz and ALLM on the specific model.
  • Total cost: Compare the price of the complete package, including any subwoofer or rear speakers you intend to add. Optional components can change the value calculation substantially.

Alternatives by setup and budget

Sony HT-S2000: lower-cost standalone bar

The Sony HT-S2000 is a budget-oriented 3.1-channel bar with virtual Dolby Atmos and Bluetooth streaming. TechRadar describes its dialogue as clear, making it a candidate if you want a straightforward bar without buying a subwoofer and rear speakers. Its approximate prices in TechRadar’s guide are $349, £299 and AU$695; these are regional snapshots, not guaranteed current prices. Check the current local listing and package before buying.

It has no Wi-Fi and lacks 4K 120Hz passthrough. That makes it a less suitable match if you want Wi-Fi-based multiroom audio or need the soundbar to pass a high-refresh-rate console signal to your TV. Virtual Atmos should not be treated as equivalent to a system with discrete height speakers.

Sonos Beam (Gen 2): compact Sonos option

The Beam (Gen 2) is a different product from the Beam Ultra. RTINGS describes it as a 5.0 setup with Dolby Atmos support and a wide soundstage for its size. It can make sense for a smaller room, especially if you already use Sonos products, but it does not include a discrete subwoofer. Compare the Beam (Gen 2)’s measured characteristics with your priorities.

Do not read “Atmos support” as proof that it has the same configuration as the Ultra: Sonos presents the Beam Ultra as a 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos bar. The two models occupy different positions in the range and should not be confused when comparing listings.

Bose Smart Soundbar: compact alternative ecosystem

The Bose Smart Soundbar is another compact one-bar option. In RTINGS’ comparison, Bose performs somewhat better for surround and Atmos, while the Beam (Gen 2) produces a larger stereo soundstage. The better fit therefore depends on whether your priority is music and stereo width, or surround effects, as well as whether your home already includes Sonos or Bose equipment. See the reviewers’ comparison for the specific test results.

Samsung HW-Q800F: midrange step-up

TechRadar positions the Samsung HW-Q800F as a strong-value step-up and places it below the fuller surround experience of the HW-Q990F. Treat that as an editorial assessment rather than a universal ranking. Before comparing it with a standalone bar, confirm the exact HW-Q800F package in your market, whether the subwoofer is included, what TV features it supports, and the current local price. Review the guide’s current positioning and verify the regional package.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7 + S: add bass with a separate subwoofer

The Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7 + S is a 5.1.2-channel package with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support. In What Hi-Fi?’s UK comparison, the Sony package delivered more forceful bass than the Beam Ultra, while reviewers preferred the Ultra’s cohesion and spatial positioning. Those are observations from that comparison, not a promise about every room or listener. The article listed both systems at £699 when it was published in 2026; that is a dated UK price comparison, not a current or global price. Read the comparison in context and check today’s local package price.

JBL Bar 1300MK2: bundled system with detachable rear speakers

The JBL Bar 1300MK2 is an 11.1.4 system with detachable rechargeable rear speakers, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, according to TechRadar. Its detachable surrounds offer a way to add physical rear channels without leaving speakers permanently wired around the room. The trade-offs noted by TechRadar include premium pricing and no 4K 120Hz passthrough or ALLM, so console owners should check whether those limitations conflict with their TV and gaming setup. Check the guide and the exact regional model details.

Beam Ultra as a comparison baseline

Sonos presents Beam Ultra as a 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar. SoundGuys lists nine drivers, including two up-firing drivers, HDMI eARC, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, room calibration, and no HDMI passthrough. It reported a US price of $699 in its review published in September 2026; check Sonos’ current regional listing for up-to-date price and availability. See Sonos’ product page for current US availability and configuration. SoundGuys’ review provides its specifications and review context.

Sonos’ UK product page shows expansion bundles with Sub Mini and Era 100 speakers. Adding those components can change both the system’s bass and surround capability, but also its final cost. Compare an expanded Sonos system against complete packages from other brands rather than comparing the Beam Ultra’s bar-only price with a competitor’s bundle price. Check Sonos’ UK listing for the bundles shown there.

Check TV compatibility before buying

For Dolby Atmos home-theater playback, Sonos says a compatible TV and an HDMI eARC or HDMI ARC connection are required. Check the TV’s specifications and the soundbar’s supported formats, then confirm how your streaming device, console or other source will connect. Also verify the precise model’s passthrough capabilities if you expect to route video through the bar; the Beam Ultra, for example, has no HDMI passthrough according to SoundGuys.

  1. Identify the source and format you use. Confirm that your TV or playback device can provide the audio format you want, including Atmos or DTS:X where relevant.
  2. Check the TV connection. Look for HDMI eARC or ARC support and confirm the port you will use.
  3. Check gaming video requirements. If you use a console, verify support for 4K at 120Hz and ALLM across the full connection path; a feature on the TV alone is not enough if the soundbar interrupts that signal.
  4. Price the complete setup. Include any subwoofer, rear speakers, mounts or other components you expect to need, and compare current country-specific bundles.
