How to Tell If Your Ethernet Cable Is Bad

A failed or unstable Ethernet link can point to a bad cable, but ports and other network components can cause similar symptoms. Check both ends and compare with a known-good cable.

A bad Ethernet cable can prevent a link from coming up, cause repeated disconnects, or contribute to packet errors—even when a link light is on. None of those signs proves the cable is at fault: a loose plug, disabled or faulty port, incorrect connection, or another network component can look similar. The quickest useful check is to reseat both ends, then compare the connection with a known-good cable while keeping the devices and ports the same.

What symptoms can point to a bad Ethernet cable?

  • No link: Neither device reports a wired connection after the cable is connected. The cable may be faulty, but first check that both ports are enabled and that the plugs are in the intended ports.
  • Link on only one end: One device may show a connection while the other does not. Cisco notes that a broken wire can produce this kind of mismatch.
  • Repeated link loss: A connection that continually drops and returns can be consistent with a marginal cable.
  • Many packet errors: A high number of errors recorded by a port can also point toward a cable problem.

These symptoms are clues, not a diagnosis. A link light is not a clean bill of health: a cable can establish link and still be impaired. See Cisco’s Troubleshoot LAN Switching Environments for its troubleshooting guidance.

How to check the cable without special equipment

1. Reseat and inspect both ends

Confirm that each plug goes to the intended device and port. Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends. Look for dirt, poor seating, or visibly damaged or missing contacts on the connectors. Check the cable for obvious crushing, sharp bends, or other physical damage. Visible damage raises suspicion, but an undamaged exterior does not establish that the cable works properly.

2. Check link status at both devices

Look for a link indicator or check the wired-interface status on each device. If there is no link, confirm that both devices and ports are enabled and functioning. In Cisco’s switch troubleshooting example, a good, correctly typed cable between enabled ports should establish link within a few seconds. That timing is not a guarantee for every device; use the indicators and interface status available on your hardware.

3. Replace only the suspect cable for comparison

Connect a cable you know works and that is suitable for the connection. Where practical, leave the same devices and ports in place so the cable is the only changed part. If the problem disappears, the original cable becomes a stronger suspect. Avoid drawing a conclusion from an arbitrary replacement cable whose condition or suitability is unknown.

4. If the problem remains, check another port

Try a known-good port if one is available. If the symptom persists with a known-good cable, consider the endpoint, port state or configuration, patch panel, and any other intermediary in the path. Changing one component at a time makes the comparison more informative.

What Ethernet cable testers can—and cannot—tell you

A tester is most useful when the cable is installed, difficult to substitute, or one of many runs that need checking. The right tool depends on the question: whether the conductors connect correctly, whether the link supports a target capability, or whether it meets a cabling standard.

Test type What it assesses What it does not establish
Verification or wiremap/continuity Whether conductors connect to the proper points; some tools can help locate a break. Whether the link supports a particular data rate.
Qualification Whether a link supports a capability such as Gigabit Ethernet. Standards-based certification of the cabling.
Certification A distinct, standards-oriented assessment of a cabling link. It is not the same test as basic continuity or qualification.

Fluke Networks explains these distinctions in its Overview: Network Cable Testers. A basic wiremap result should not be treated as proof of bandwidth capability. Professional qualification or certification tools are mainly relevant when diagnosing installed wiring or verifying cabling against requirements.

When should you replace the cable?

Replace it when the fault follows that cable in a controlled comparison, or when its connectors or body are visibly damaged and it cannot be relied on. For a patch cable, substitution is usually a simpler first check than buying a tester. Choose a replacement appropriate to the connection’s speed and installation needs; the right cable depends on the setup rather than on a single category being correct for every network.

For an installed run, use a tester suited to the question you need answered or ask a network technician to test it. Fluke Networks lists the LinkIQ Cable+Network Tester as one professional option; its product page identifies the tester and included equipment. How to distinguish a cable fault from an internet outage

Ethernet describes the wired connection between devices; an internet outage can originate elsewhere in the network. If the wired link remains established but internet access is unavailable, the cable is not proven to be the cause. Check the link at both ends and use the known-good-cable comparison before concluding that the cable is responsible. If the link remains down with a known-good cable, investigate the ports, devices, and intermediate wiring instead.
