If the phone’s own screen has cracks, abnormal lines or spots, or touch problems, seek professional inspection. Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip owners should not remove or replace the main-screen film themselves.
How to tell whether the protector or the screen is cracked
Inspect the phone in good light without pressing hard on the glass. A crack in a removable protector is not proof that the display underneath is cracked. But impact can damage the display even when the outer glass looks intact.

- Look for abnormal lines, black spots, ink-like marks, or significant touch problems. These can indicate damage to the phone’s display.
- If you cannot confidently distinguish the protector’s crack from damage underneath, arrange professional inspection rather than testing the surface by pressing it.
Samsung advises repair as soon as possible when a Galaxy’s display glass itself is cracked, and recommends professional service for inspection. Samsung’s Galaxy screen damage guidance also notes that a case or screen protector may help reduce damage but is not a repair for an already cracked screen.
What to do if only a removable protector is cracked
- Keep fingers away from loose or sharp pieces. Avoid picking at fragments or putting pressure on a damaged area.
- Replace the protector soon. Samsung lists cracks among possible protective-film damage and notes that films can lift or attach and remove poorly. It does not specify a universal replacement schedule.
- Choose one made for the exact phone model. Check that it fits the device and covers the corners and edges. Google recommends full-screen coverage, including corners and edges, to help prevent scratches; Samsung recommends compatible or Samsung-certified accessories for Galaxy devices.
A damaged or unsuitable film can affect touch response, fingerprint recognition, display quality, or other functions. A new protector can help protect an intact screen; it cannot fix a display that is already damaged.

Special case: Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip main-screen film
The inner screen film on Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models is not an ordinary removable protector. Samsung says owners should have the main-screen film replaced at a service centre. Removing it or applying a non-official film may cause touch abnormalities or screen damage. Follow Samsung UK’s precautions for Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip film rather than generic advice for removable protectors.
When to seek professional inspection
Arrange professional inspection if the phone itself appears cracked, shows abnormal lines or spots, or has significant touch problems. For Galaxy devices, Samsung recommends repair as soon as possible when the display glass is cracked. Repair options and availability depend on the device and location.

Google’s guidance that “Over time, even tiny fractures can grow and cause cracks” concerns screen damage prevention generally; it is not a finding specifically about cracks in screen protectors. See Google’s Pixel screen-protection guidance.
