The best streaming device depends on your TV, sound system, network and smart-home setup: Roku Ultra is the most fully featured pick here for wired networking and a broad remote feature set; Google TV Streamer suits Google Home users; Apple TV 4K fits Apple households; and the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K is a compact Amazon-oriented option if you do not need Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos. These are evidence-based fits, not results of hands-on testing by this publication.
How to choose a streaming device
Start with the features you can actually use. A player’s support for 4K, HDR or Dolby Atmos does not guarantee those formats will work: your TV, audio equipment, subscription and selected title must also support them. Roku and Apple both qualify certain features based on compatible equipment or content.

- Check your TV and sound system: Match their supported formats to the device. If you have a Dolby Vision TV or Atmos-capable audio system, verify the device and service support the format as well.
- Choose a network connection: Ethernet can be useful if you prefer a wired connection or Wi-Fi is unreliable where the TV sits. The models differ in whether Ethernet is built in or requires a particular configuration or adapter.
- Consider your household’s ecosystem: Google Home and Matter controls, Apple integration, Roku’s interface or Amazon and Alexa features may matter more than small specification differences.
- Account for the full setup cost: Google and Apple say an HDMI cable is sold separately. Check what is included with the exact retail package and buy a suitable cable; the cited setup information does not establish a need for an expensive one.

Roku Ultra: wired networking and a feature-rich remote
Roku Ultra is a strong choice if you want a box rather than a stick, built-in Ethernet and a remote with a broad feature set. Roku lists 4K at up to 60 frames per second, Dolby Vision, HDR10/10+, HLG, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, USB and a Voice Remote Pro. Its support for a format still depends on compatible equipment and content.

Roku says the Ultra is “30% faster than any other Roku device.” That is the manufacturer’s comparative claim, not an independently established head-to-head result in the evidence cited here. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide lists the Roku Ultra (2024) with an overall score of 78 and an approximate price of $90; neither figure should be treated as this publication’s test result or a live price. Check that the model you are considering corresponds to the model year in the guide.

Google TV Streamer: Google Home controls and casting
Choose Google TV Streamer if Google’s interface and smart-home features are useful in your household. Google lists built-in Ethernet, casting, Matter and Thread support, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and 32 GB of storage. The Ethernet port provides a wired alternative to Wi-Fi; Google’s wording about uninterrupted streaming is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

Google’s processor-speed descriptions are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative results.

The Wi-Fi model has 64 GB of storage; the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model has 128 GB and Gigabit Ethernet. Apple says HDMI cable is sold separately.

Tom’s Guide has described the interface as clean and the device as premium-priced; those are editorial judgments, and its accessible streaming-device guide is labeled 2025 rather than a 2026 test. Apple’s technical specifications
Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026): a compact Amazon option
This is Amazon’s 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K, not the older Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023). Amazon’s device specifications list Vega OS, Wi-Fi 6, 4K, HDR10/HDR10+/HLG and 8 GB of storage. Current reporting says the new model lacks Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, so it is a weaker fit if either format is essential to your setup. Ethernet requires an adapter.

What Hi-Fi? reported Amazon’s claim that playback is nearly 20% faster than similarly priced competing sticks, while noting it had not independently performed that comparison. It should not be read as a verified performance advantage. Check Amazon’s official product information for the exact retail configuration and availability in your region.

What the available testing evidence does—and does not—show
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide gives Roku Ultra (2024) an overall score of 78 and an approximate price of $90. The guide says its overall score is based on all its tests and identifies picture quality, ease of use and features among its dimensions. This is Consumer Reports’ result for the model it labels Roku Ultra (2024), not a test by this publication and not evidence that it is the best choice for every household.
The other product assessments here are based on listed specifications and attributed editorial coverage, not a uniform hands-on comparison of all four devices. Tom’s Guide’s accessible guide is labeled 2025; What Hi-Fi? says it had not completed its own comparison of Amazon’s new 2026 stick. Accordingly, manufacturer claims about speed and third-party judgments should not be mistaken for directly comparable test results.
