Bulbdogs are tamed passively, not by knockout. Put Plant Species Z Seed in the final slot of your hotbar, walk up until the feed prompt appears, press the use key (default E on keyboard), and wait for the animal to become hungry again before feeding it again. Aquatic Mushroom also works, but the level-1 timing table lists a much longer interval between feeds.

Clear nearby dangers before you begin. You will need to approach the Bulbdog repeatedly, and the exact number of feeds and total time depend on its level, your server’s taming settings, platform controls, mods, and game updates.

The control key, prompt wording, and timing can differ by platform, custom keybind, mod, or later patch. Treat E as the default keyboard convention rather than a universal command.
Why Bulbdog taming is passive
Passive taming means you do not reduce the creature’s health, fire tranquilizers, or wait for an unconscious inventory. A Bulbdog must remain awake while you offer food. The official ARK community wiki identifies the creature’s method as Passive, so a knockout-and-feed attempt is the wrong approach.

This changes how you plan the encounter. A knockout tame can be completed beside an unconscious creature; a passive tame requires several returns to an alert animal. The Bulbdog may move, and its surroundings remain dangerous throughout the process. Removing hostile creatures from the immediate area and avoiding stray attacks are sensible precautions because the procedure depends on repeated, non-violent approaches.
Prepare before you approach
Get the right food
Plant Species Z Seed is the preferred and most efficient listed food. Put a useful quantity in your inventory before searching so you do not have to leave midway through the tame. Aquatic Mushroom is an accepted substitute when Plant Species Z Seed is unavailable on your map or server.

They are shown as slower or less efficient choices than Plant Species Z Seed. Their presence in a food table does not make them equally practical, especially when you must repeatedly stand near a vulnerable creature.

Put food in the final hotbar slot
Move Plant Species Z Seed, or your chosen substitute, to the last slot of the hotbar before you begin. The feed interaction checks that slot. Having the item buried in a normal inventory stack is not the same as having it ready for the passive-tame prompt.
Set up a safe approach
- Look for nearby predators, environmental hazards, and other players who could interrupt the encounter.
- Do not attack the Bulbdog while preparing the tame.
- Leave yourself a clear path to step away after each feed and return when the creature is hungry.
- Carry enough food for repeated interactions rather than assuming one feeding completes the tame.
Safety advice here follows from the repeated-approach procedure; the feeding instructions do not describe a separate “safe zone” mechanic. The purpose is to prevent the animal from dying or the interaction from being interrupted while you wait.
Step-by-step: passive-tame a Bulbdog
- Find a Bulbdog and observe the area. Before opening the interaction, check for creatures or players that could attack either of you. If the area is unsafe, relocate or remove the immediate threat without hitting the Bulbdog.
- Equip the food. Place Plant Species Z Seed in the last hotbar slot. If you are using the substitute, place Aquatic Mushroom there instead.
- Walk up slowly. Move close enough for the passive feeding prompt to appear. Do not fire a weapon, use a tranquilizer, or deliberately damage the Bulbdog.
- Use the interaction. Press E on a default keyboard layout, or the platform’s equivalent use button. The prompt may not appear until you are at the correct distance and have the food selected in the required slot.
- Back away and wait. The Bulbdog cannot consume the entire tame in one interaction. After feeding, give it time to become hungry again. Trying immediately can produce no feeding action because its hunger interval has not elapsed.
- Repeat the interaction. Return when the prompt becomes available and feed again. Continue this feed–wait–return cycle until the taming meter reaches 100 percent.
- Confirm the tame. Once the meter is full, verify that ownership has changed and that the Bulbdog is following the normal behavior of a tamed shoulder pet before leaving the area.
The meter, rather than a guessed number of interactions, is the reliable completion test. Creature level and server settings can change how many feeds are required.

How long does Bulbdog taming take?
There is no single duration that applies to every Bulbdog. The published timing table is explicitly a level-1 example, and server taming multipliers, creature level, mods, and later patches can alter both the wait between feedings and the total number of feedings.

Those intervals are per feeding, not a promise that a tame finishes after one minute or three minutes. A total estimate requires the number of feeds for that Bulbdog and the server’s rates. You can think of the unmodified total as the number of required feeding intervals plus the interaction time, but the number of intervals is not fixed in the supplied table. Watch the in-game taming meter and hunger prompt instead of relying on a universal timer.
Accelerated or modified servers may display a different wait, while a higher-level creature can require more food interactions. Platform settings and patches can also change how the prompt or timer is presented. If your observed interval differs from the level-1 figures above, that does not by itself indicate a failed tame.

Plant Species Z Seed versus Aquatic Mushroom
Choose between the two foods using four practical questions: can you obtain it on this map, how long can you safely remain near the Bulbdog, how many feeds will the meter require, and what hazards surround the animal?
- Use Plant Species Z Seed when possible. It has the shorter level-1 interval in the published table, reducing the time you must remain in the area between interactions.
- Use Aquatic Mushroom when availability is the deciding factor. It is a valid passive-taming food, but plan for the longer listed wait between feeds.
- Consider surroundings as well as food efficiency. In a dangerous location, a shorter interval can reduce exposure to predators or environmental threats. In a secure enclosure, the longer alternative may be acceptable.
- Do not assume a fixed feed count. Level and server settings affect the meter, so compare the food’s interval with the actual progress you see.
What if you do not have Plant Species Z Seed?
Aquatic Mushroom is the clearly documented alternative. The wiki’s broader food table also displays cooked lamb chop, cooked prime meat, raw mutton, sweet vegetable cake, cooked meat, raw prime meat, raw meat, cooked or raw fish, and Amarberry Seed. These options are listed as slower or less efficient than Plant Species Z Seed, so they are fallback choices rather than equivalent replacements.
If you decide to use one of those foods, keep the same procedure: put it in the final hotbar slot, wait for the interaction prompt, feed passively, and return only after the Bulbdog is hungry again. Do not switch to a knockout method simply because your preferred seed is missing; the creature’s taming method remains passive.
Troubleshooting common problems

What a tamed Bulbdog is useful for
A Bulbdog is a shoulder-mounted charge-light pet and is listed as radiation immune. That combination makes it a practical light companion for exploring Aberration, where visibility and radiation exposure are central concerns. Its value is utility rather than combat instructions: tame it safely, keep it with you as a portable light source, and plan your route around the conditions of the area you are entering.
The passive-taming method does not require you to damage the animal, and the resulting shoulder companion can be obtained without a knockout trap. The best food choice therefore saves preparation and reduces the amount of time you spend exposed while waiting for hunger intervals.

Use the level-1 figures as reference points, not guarantees. A creature’s level can change the required progress, while server taming multipliers can change the displayed interval and total duration. Mods and later patches may alter food acceptance, prompts, or timing. Console and controller layouts use their own interaction buttons, and a custom keyboard binding may replace E.
When in doubt, trust three observations from your current game: whether the interaction prompt appears, whether the Bulbdog accepts the selected food, and how far the taming meter advances after each successful feed. Those observations account for your actual map, settings, and version more accurately than a timing copied from a level-1 example.
