The best “mod pack” for a Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server is a compatible add-on made from one or more behavior packs and resource packs. Bedrock servers do not load Java Edition mod loaders such as Forge or Fabric. Behavior packs alter gameplay; resource packs alter textures, models, sounds, and other presentation. A .mcaddon file is normally a bundle containing those pack folders.
There is no universal best pack. The right choice depends on whether your players want new mechanics, a visual overhaul, or both, and whether the pack supports the exact Bedrock server release you run. Use the selection guide below, then install and activate the packs correctly—uploading folders alone does not enable them.

For a hosted Bedrock server, Godlike.Host’s Minecraft Bedrock hosting offers its own Bedrock Edition hosting product and a Pterodactyl-based game panel. You still need to extract, upload and register add-ons as described below.
What counts as a mod pack on Bedrock?
Bedrock uses a different extension model from Java Edition. A Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) does not run Java mod loaders or Java .jar mods. Its supported equivalent is the add-on system:
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
- Behavior packs define gameplay data such as entities, loot tables, recipes, spawning and other rules.
- Resource packs define client-facing assets such as textures, models, sounds, animations and text.
- Add-ons commonly bundle one behavior pack and one resource pack so the gameplay and visual changes work together.
Downloads usually arrive as .mcpack (one pack) or .mcaddon (a bundle). BDS reads unpacked directories, not the archive itself. A file can therefore be perfectly valid on a player’s device yet appear to do nothing on a server until its folders are extracted, copied to the server and registered in the world configuration.
The best pack type for each server goal
| What your players want | Best starting point | What changes | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| New mobs, items, recipes or progression | Behavior pack, or an add-on with a behavior pack | Gameplay rules, entities, loot and crafting | Can conflict with other gameplay packs and may break after a major version update |
| A new visual style or soundscape | Resource pack | Textures, models, sounds, animations and interface assets | Usually does not change gameplay, but can increase download size or expose device-performance limits |
| A coordinated gameplay-and-visual experience | Matched add-on (.mcaddon) |
Behavior and resources designed to work together | Both halves must be installed, registered and kept at compatible versions |
| A lightly customized survival server | One narrowly scoped behavior pack | A specific mechanic, recipe set or entity change | Easier to troubleshoot than a large stack, but less transformative |
| A themed community world | One add-on plus its required dependencies | Rules and presentation built around one theme | Dependencies and load order need to be documented before players join |
For a new server, start with one pack in a disposable test world. Add packs one at a time and record exactly which version was installed. This gives you a reliable baseline when a future update or a second pack causes a problem.
How to choose a Bedrock pack before downloading it
Match the server version
Check the pack’s stated Minecraft version against the BDS version shown by your server. Compatibility can change with a major update even when the pack’s name has not changed. Treat an update as a new compatibility decision, not as an automatic upgrade.

Identify the pack’s scope
Read the description for the actual features: entities, recipes, loot, dimensions, textures or sounds. A resource pack cannot add a recipe, and a behavior pack cannot supply the textures that a new entity needs. If a download promises both, verify that it contains both pack types rather than assuming the label guarantees it.
Check dependencies and UUIDs
A pack may depend on another pack. The dependency UUID must exactly match the other pack’s header UUID in its manifest.json. Keep the dependency files together and install every required component; installing only the visible “main” folder commonly produces missing content or a pack that does not load.
Prefer maintainable, testable packs
- Look for a clear version number and a stated supported Bedrock range.
- Prefer packs whose folder contains a readable
manifest.jsonat its top level. - Keep a copy of the original archive and the extracted folders so you can roll back.
- Test multiplayer behavior, not only a single-player preview. Server permissions, spawning and resource downloads can behave differently.
- Do not stack several packs that edit the same entities, recipes or files until each one has passed a separate test.
What you need before installing
- A running Bedrock Dedicated Server and administrative access to its files.
- The world folder that the server actually starts. Installing files in an unused world folder has no effect.
- A complete backup of the world and server directory, taken while the server is stopped.
- The
.mcpackor.mcaddonarchive and its stated version and dependencies. - A local computer on which you can rename an archive and extract it.
- A way to transfer folders to the server, such as the host’s file manager, SFTP or another method provided by your administrator.
Make changes with the server stopped. A restart is required after pack files or world registration files change, and stopping first reduces the chance of a partial write to the world.

Install packs on a fresh Bedrock world
- Make a local copy of the download. Preserve the original archive before changing its name.
- Rename the extension to ZIP. Rename
.mcpackor.mcaddonto.zip, then extract it on your own computer. BDS reads folders, not the compressed archive. - Inspect the extracted structure. Each pack folder must contain
manifest.jsondirectly inside that folder. If extraction created an extra wrapper directory, open it and use the inner folder—the one wheremanifest.jsonis immediately visible. - Separate the pack types. Put behavior-pack folders in the behavior-pack directory and resource-pack folders in the resource-pack directory used by your server build. The conventional BDS directories are
behavior_packsandresource_packs. A bundle can contain several folders, so place each folder in the directory matching its manifest. - Check the directory convention for your release. A Microsoft-sourced server snippet refers to
development_behavior_packs, while other BDS installation guides usebehavior_packsandresource_packs. These instructions are not reconciled here; verify the current directory names in the documentation or file layout shipped with your exact BDS release before uploading. Do not create a second, guessed directory and expect the server to scan it. - Open the manifest files. Record the
header.uuidand the version array from each pack. The header UUID identifies that pack; it is not interchangeable with a module UUID. - Copy the folders to the server. Upload the extracted folders, not the ZIP file, to the matching pack directories. Keep the folder name stable so later updates can be identified.
- Register the packs for the world. In the active world folder, create or edit
world_behavior_packs.jsonfor behavior packs andworld_resource_packs.jsonfor resource packs. Each file contains a JSON array of pack registrations. - Use the header UUID as
pack_id. Add the pack’s header UUID and its version array. A Microsoft tutorial example is:[ { "pack_id" : "33556fcf-d192-4d5f-96a0-29357702af7b", "version" : [ 1, 0, 0 ] } ]. Replace the example UUID and version with the values in your pack’s manifest. - Register every required component. A bundled add-on may need one behavior entry and one resource entry. A dependency may require its own entry as well. Keep the JSON syntax valid: square brackets around the list, braces around each object, commas between objects, and no trailing comma after the last object.
- Restart BDS. Start the server only after the folders and JSON files are in place. Join with a test account and verify the pack’s distinctive feature before inviting the wider community.
UUID and manifest rules that determine whether a pack loads
Every pack manifest has a header UUID in the form xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx, using hexadecimal characters. That UUID must uniquely identify the pack. Microsoft recommends generating UUIDs with an online UUID service when creating your own pack.
Recommended Free Tools
Each module inside the manifest needs its own UUID, different from the header UUID. Reusing the header UUID for a module can prevent the pack from appearing. If a behavior pack declares a dependency, the dependency UUID must exactly equal the dependent pack’s header UUID—not its module UUID and not a newly generated value.
If a behavior pack is missing from the in-game list, compare the header and module UUIDs first. Then confirm that the registration file uses the header UUID, the version array matches the manifest, and the manifest is directly inside the uploaded folder.

Using packs in an existing single-player world
If the world already has the desired add-ons enabled, an export can reduce manual registration work:
- Open the world in Bedrock single-player and enable the behavior and resource packs in the world settings.
- Export the world from Bedrock, producing a world archive.
- Extract the export on your computer.
- Locate the exported
behavior_packsandresource_packsfolders and the generated world JSON files. - Back up the server’s current world, then copy the exported pack folders and the corresponding JSON files into the world you will run on BDS.
- Confirm that the world name or level identifier in the server configuration points to that edited world, then restart and test.
Microsoft’s tutorial material indicates that importing a pack can generate the JSON registration files automatically, but the pack folders still have to be copied to the server manually. An export is therefore convenient, not a substitute for checking the server’s actual file layout and active world.

How to verify that an add-on is active
- Check the server log during startup for manifest, dependency or JSON parsing errors.
- Join the exact world whose folder you edited; testing a different world can make a successful installation look broken.
- For a behavior pack, test a distinctive recipe, entity, loot change or rule that the pack claims to add.
- For a resource pack, confirm a distinctive texture, sound or model. If only visuals are missing, verify that the resource entry is present even if the behavior pack works.
- Ask a second player to join. A client that has not downloaded the required resource pack can see a different result from the server operator.
- Stop the server and restore the backup if the world behaves unexpectedly. Remove one pack at a time rather than deleting all registrations at once.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The pack never appears | The archive is still compressed, the folder is nested, or the server is scanning a different directory convention | Extract the archive, place manifest.json directly in the pack folder, and verify the directory names for the current BDS release |
| The pack appears but has no effect | The folder was uploaded but not registered in the active world’s JSON file | Add the header UUID and manifest version to world_behavior_packs.json or world_resource_packs.json, then restart |
| A behavior pack is missing from the list | Header and module UUIDs are duplicated or malformed | Give every module a UUID distinct from the header UUID and check the hexadecimal format |
| The server reports a dependency error | The dependency folder is absent or its UUID does not match the required header UUID | Install the dependency and copy its exact header UUID into the dependent manifest or registration as required |
| Gameplay loads but textures or sounds do not | The resource half of an add-on was not copied or registered | Install the matching resource folder and add its header UUID to world_resource_packs.json |
| A previously working pack breaks after an update | The pack and server versions are no longer compatible | Check the pack’s supported version, test the prior server build or obtain an updated pack, and restore the backup if necessary |
| Only one of several packs works | Two packs edit the same content, or registration order and dependencies conflict | Disable all but one, test each independently, then reintroduce them in a documented order |
| Changes are ignored after editing files | BDS was not restarted, or the edited world is not the active world | Stop and start the server and verify the world selected in the server configuration |
Managing several packs without destabilizing the server
Install in small batches
Add one behavior pack and its matching resource pack, restart, and test. Only then add the next pack. This isolates conflicts and gives you a known-good rollback point.
Best Value
- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
Keep a manifest inventory
Maintain a simple text record of each folder name, header UUID, version array, dependencies, installation date and the BDS version tested. The UUID is the identity used in the world JSON files; the folder name alone is not enough.
Back up before updates
Back up the world, pack folders and both registration files before changing a pack or the server version. Keep the old extracted folders until the updated combination has survived a multiplayer test.
Plan for client downloads
Resource-heavy packs can take longer for players to download and may perform differently on lower-powered devices. Tell players which resource pack is required and test joining from the devices your community actually uses.

- Choose behavior, resource or a matched add-on based on the change players want.
- Confirm the pack supports the exact BDS version you intend to run.
- Read the manifest and list every dependency before uploading.
- Extract the archive and verify the direct
manifest.jsonpath. - Use the directory convention documented for your BDS release; do not assume a similarly named folder is scanned.
- Copy folders to the server, then register each header UUID in the active world’s JSON files.
- Check module UUIDs, dependency UUIDs and version arrays for exact matches.
- Restart BDS and test one distinctive behavior and one distinctive visual change where applicable.
- Keep a tested backup and a written inventory so you can roll back after an update.
Bottom line
For Bedrock, “best mod pack” means the add-on that matches your server’s goal and version—not a Java mod bundle. Start with the smallest compatible pack, extract it correctly, register its header UUID in the active world’s JSON files, restart BDS and test before adding anything else. That process matters more than the download’s file name: an uploaded pack that is not registered is not active.
