AI can sound warm or say it feels happy, but it does not experience emotions or care about someone the way a person does. A child’s feelings about an AI conversation can still be real. The most useful response is to listen, explain the difference in plain language, and keep the conversation open rather than mocking or frightening them.
Start by asking what your child thinks
Begin with curiosity, not a correction. Try asking, “Do you think the chatbot has feelings?” or “What do you think it is doing when it says it feels happy?” Listen for what your child believes before you explain how the system works.

UNICEF’s interview with Ying Xu, a Harvard assistant professor of AI in Learning and Education, recommends using a child’s question or observation as a natural starting point. Xu notes that even preschool-aged children can understand simple explanations of what AI can and cannot do. As she puts it, “When a child asks a question or notices something related to AI, that moment offers a natural and age-appropriate starting point.”
Explain the difference between sounding emotional and feeling
You might say: “A chatbot is a computer program that learned patterns in language and uses them to make replies. It can use words about feelings, but it doesn’t feel them.” For a younger child, compare it with a smart speaker, robot vacuum, or toy robot: a device can respond to instructions or recognize patterns without thinking or feeling like a person. Make clear that conversational AI is more complicated than a simple toy or speaker, but the same distinction applies.

UNICEF’s Guidance on AI and Children 3.0 (December 2025) says AI literacy should include teaching children that “companion apps are not real or capable of human emotion.” The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) likewise cautions that chatbots do not think or feel. Friendly language is not evidence of an inner emotional life.
Make room for the child’s real feelings
A child might find a chatbot comforting, confusing, creepy, or convincing. Acknowledge that experience without agreeing that the AI cares: “It makes sense that it sounded friendly. How did talking with it make you feel?” Their feelings are real even though the system does not have feelings of its own.

Ask whether an interaction has ever felt untrue or unsettling, and reassure your child they can tell you without getting in trouble. Calm listening is especially important if they feel attached. Attachment by itself does not prove a clinical problem; ask what they enjoy about the interaction and keep regular human contact and activities in view.

Explore an AI answer together
If it is appropriate for your child’s age and the service’s rules, look at an answer together. Invite them to notice what is useful, confusing, or possibly wrong. Ask, “What would you do if its answer seemed wrong?” and “Would you ask a trusted adult about something important?” The goal is not to make a child distrust every answer, but to help them treat AI as a tool rather than an authority or caregiver.

A 2023 study of primary-school children aged 6–11 in Scotland, “Alexa doesn’t have that many feelings”: Children’s understanding of AI through interactions with smart speakers in their homes, reported qualitatively that many children overestimated voice assistants’ intelligence and were unsure about systems’ feelings or agency. The abstract also noted misunderstandings about privacy and security; it does not provide a sample size or percentages, so the findings should not be read as prevalence estimates.
Discuss boundaries and privacy
Talk about the practical limits of AI alongside the feelings question. A chatbot may produce false or misleading answers, and sounding caring does not give it a duty to protect a child. The AAP recommends that families consider whether chatbot use affects mood or displaces real relationships, use protective privacy settings, and include AI in family media expectations.

- Agree on what personal information should not be shared.
- Decide when a child should check an answer with an adult, especially on important or upsetting subjects.
- Keep time for people, sleep, schoolwork, and offline interests in the family’s media expectations.
- Choose settings and use rules that fit the child’s age, maturity, and the service’s terms and safeguards.
UNICEF also advises teaching children about AI’s limitations and risks such as emotional manipulation. These discussions can be revisited as a child encounters different tools.

If your child relies on a chatbot emotionally
Ask what the child gets from the interaction and listen without ridicule. Pay attention to changes such as disrupted sleep, withdrawing socially, or dropping usual interests and responsibilities. The AAP’s parent guidance recommends talking with the child’s doctor if they seem withdrawn and prefer chatbots to people. These are reasons to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

Prompts that keep the conversation open
- “Do you think the chatbot has feelings? What makes you think that?”
- “How do you think it made that answer?”
- “How did talking with it make you feel?”
- “What would you do if its answer seemed wrong?”
- “Is there anything you would rather talk about with a person?”
For teenagers, the AAP suggests broader questions such as “How are you using AI?”, “Can you show me how it works?”, “How are your friends using it?” and “How does it make you feel?”
