Before buying anything in a free-to-play game, check the real-money price, whether the reward is guaranteed, what the purchase changes, whether it renews, and which refund rules apply. If a child or shared payment method is involved, set purchase controls first. Offers and platform policies vary, so verify the terms for the exact game, account, platform, and region.
Start with this pre-purchase checklist
- Translate the offer into real money. Use the checkout price, not just the number of gems, coins, or tokens. If the game sells currency in bundles, estimate the real-money cost of the amount needed and account for any balance left unused. Check whether you are buying a repeatable consumable or a one-time unlock. The FTC cautions that converting money into virtual currency can make it harder for children to track spending: FTC guidance on kids and video games.
- Find out whether the result is guaranteed. A direct purchase is different from a randomized pack, crate, spin, or loot box. For a random reward, look for the odds of the relevant outcomes before confirming payment. Apple’s App Review Guidelines require odds disclosure before purchase for loot boxes and other mechanisms that provide randomized virtual items. Google Play developer guidance also requires advance disclosure close to the purchase for covered randomized virtual-item mechanisms, subject to the current policy’s scope and exceptions. Odds are not a promise that you will receive a particular item or that repeated attempts are worthwhile.
- Decide what the purchase changes. Does it unlock content, save time, change appearance, affect competition or progression, or only give a chance at an item? Compare the benefit with what you can do for free and with a spending limit you have chosen in advance. For a child, ask the FTC’s practical question: “Does the game manipulate kids into buying in-game purchases to succeed in the game or to prevent something bad from happening in the game?”
- Check whether it renews. At checkout, look for whether the offer is a subscription, its billing interval and renewal price, any trial end date, and the cancellation method. These terms can vary by platform and offer; rely on the live terms attached to your purchase.
- Know the refund route. Identify which company or platform will process the payment and keep the receipt. Google Play’s refund guidance says most purchases are not refunded and that eligibility may depend on how much time has passed. Submit a request promptly through the platform that handled the transaction, but do not assume it will be approved.
- Set purchase controls before sharing a device. Where available, turn off in-game purchases, require authentication for each purchase, or set a spending limit. Check the platform account and payment method that will be charged. The exact controls and menus vary by device.
- Consider the whole game, not just the offer. Check ratings, positive and negative reviews, age suitability, ads, multiplayer chat, and whether the game creates pressure to pay. The FTC’s 2025 consumer alert warns that some games described as ad-free may still show ads.
Compare offers by what you get and what you risk
Headline currency totals can obscure the important differences. Compare the offer types and terms directly:

Why checking transparency matters
In a 2025 enforcement matter involving Genshin Impact, the FTC announced a settlement that included a $20 million payment and restrictions on loot-box sales to children under 16 without parental consent. The agency said the case involved allegations that consumers were misled about real costs and odds; the settlement is specific to that matter and does not establish that every game uses the same practices. Samuel Levine, then director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said: “Genshin Impact deceived children, teens, and other players into spending hundreds of dollars on prizes they stood little chance of winning.” FTC announcement of the Genshin Impact settlement.

The FTC also notes that children may not understand the chance of getting a desired loot-box item and may find it difficult to track spending after real money becomes gems or coins. These are reasons to check the odds and actual checkout cost—not evidence that every randomized offer or game is misleading. FTC guidance on loot boxes and virtual currency.

When a child or shared payment method is involved
Before handing over a device, check which account and payment method are active, then use the purchase controls available on that device or platform. The FTC says many games encourage children to buy digital goods—such as weapons, currency, loot boxes, outfits, or bonus levels—using a card linked to the account. It recommends considering controls that turn spending off, require a password, or set a dollar limit. FTC guidance on kids and video games.
