How to Talk to Someone About Getting Tested for HIV

A calm, direct conversation can make HIV testing easier. Use these scripts, testing options, and CDC guidance on results and timing.

Keep the conversation calm, direct, and focused on shared health—not blame. Ask whether it is a good time to talk, explain what you want, and offer a practical next step, such as making an appointment or testing together. A test tells someone about their own HIV status; it does not establish a partner’s status.

What to say to a partner

Choose a private, comfortable moment and check that the other person is ready to talk. You might open with:

You can also ask when they last tested or suggest testing before sex with a new partner. Asking is not an accusation, and it does not prove that anyone has had an exposure or been unfaithful. CDC suggests being direct and using “I” statements; a simple pattern is: “I feel [emotion] when/about [event]. Can you [action/request]?” Its Talk HIV guidance offers conversation starters and advice on timing and setting.

You could also ask a trusted person to help find a clinic, arrange a ride, or stay with you while you take a self-test. The aim is support, not pressure.

How to keep the conversation respectful and safe

  • Pick the moment: Ask whether it is a good time to talk. Choose a setting where both people feel comfortable, and pause if either of you needs a break.
  • Talk about your own needs: Explain why testing matters to you and make a clear request instead of guessing at someone else’s history or status.
  • Use non-stigmatizing language: Treat testing as ordinary health care. Do not use “clean” to mean HIV-negative or infer someone’s status from identity or behavior. CDC notes that stigma can discourage testing and care; see Stigma and HIV.
  • Do not put safety at risk: If someone fears threats or violence from a partner, do not pressure them to disclose alone. HIV.gov’s guidance on talking about HIV status says a clinician or local health department may be able to help notify partners. Confidentiality exceptions and legal requirements vary by location.

Offer a practical way to get tested

Ask which option feels workable: a health care provider, a community testing location, or an HIV self-test. In the United States, CDC says many tests are free or reduced cost and provides a testing locator and overview of testing. Availability and cost depend on the location and service.

Option What to expect Useful consideration
Clinic or health care provider A provider can help choose a test and explain follow-up. Laboratory tests may take longer to return results than rapid tests. Useful if someone wants professional support or has questions about timing and results.
Community testing site Services and test types vary by location; some offer free or reduced-cost testing. Check what tests are available and whether an appointment is needed.
HIV self-test A person takes the test themselves, often at home. Most self-tests are antibody tests. Offers a private, self-directed option. A positive result needs follow-up testing with a provider or testing center.

A self-test is optional, not the only route. CDC describes self-testing and follow-up in its HIV self-testing guidance. Testing together can mean going to the same service or choosing self-tests; each person still receives a result about their own status.

Explain what a test can—and cannot—tell you

No HIV test detects infection immediately after exposure. The usual detection period depends on the test type. CDC lists these typical window periods on its page dated September 15, 2026:

Test type Typical time after exposure when it can detect HIV
Nucleic acid test (NAT) 10–33 days
Laboratory antigen/antibody test using blood from a vein 18–45 days
Rapid antigen/antibody test using finger-stick blood 18–90 days
Antibody test, including most rapid tests and self-tests 23–90 days

These are CDC’s usual detection periods, not a guarantee that every infection will be detected on a particular day. If someone tests negative after a possible exposure, CDC advises testing again after the window period for the test used. If that repeat test is after the window period and there has been no possible exposure in the meantime, a negative result means that person does not have HIV. The current details are in CDC’s testing guidance.

A negative result belongs to the person who took the test. It cannot confirm a partner’s status. If a self-test is positive, CDC says to seek follow-up testing through a health care provider or testing center; the self-test is not the end of the diagnostic process.
