Focus on specific things they have done, listen without judgment, and offer a practical next step—without diagnosing them or assuming cannabis caused the behavior. If they are threatening someone, using a weapon, or medically unstable, get distance and seek urgent help instead of confronting them.
First decide whether a conversation is safe
A planned conversation is for a calm moment, not an active emergency. If the person is threatening or assaulting someone, has a weapon, or appears to need urgent medical care, move yourself and others to safety and contact emergency services. Do not try to persuade them while they are escalating.

In the United States, call or text 988 for behavioral health crisis support. Depending on the location, a mobile crisis team may be available. Call emergency services for immediate danger or urgent medical need; local crisis response options vary. SAMHSA describes crisis care as “Someone to Contact,” “Someone to Respond,” and “A Safe Place for Help” in its 2025 National Behavioral Health Crisis Care Guidance, last updated January 22, 2026.

If there is no immediate danger, wait until the person is no longer acutely intoxicated or agitated. Plan what you want to say, and consider talking during a low-pressure shared activity if that feels appropriate. The CDC recommends preparing, listening without judgment, and letting the other person lead if they are willing.
#1 Best Overall
- MEETS OFFICIAL STANDARD CUTOFF: This at-home thc drug test kit detects down to 50 ng/mL threshold. For over-the-counter use. Using the same detection method as lab screening weed drug test.
- CERTIFIED AND TRUSTED TEST: Detects cannabinoids(THC) metabolites in urine up to 5+ days after consumption. The thc test kit complies with all the applicable regulations.
- EASY TO USE AND FAST RESULTS: Simply immerse the test into urine for 10 seconds. Bold and solid lines appear instantly. Two lines are present indicate a negative result; if only the control line appears, it's positive.
- Track Your THC Detox: Utilize this home THC testing kit to gauge the presence of THC in urine. Regular testing can help you observe the decrease in THC levels. Walk you through a detox program, preparing to pass a pre-employment screening, or just random testing.
- Customer Usage Advisory: This kit is designed to test with human urine only. Testing with any other substance, such as water, is very likely to produce incorrect outcomes. Ensure you use it correctly to pass the test and flush THC out of your system effectively.
Use concrete examples instead of labels or assumptions. Say what happened, when it happened, and how it affected you or someone else. For example: “When you shouted and shoved the door last night, I felt unsafe. Can we talk about what was going on?” Avoid calling the person an addict, saying they are violent by nature, or diagnosing them as psychotic. This kind of wording applies the CDC’s nonjudgmental guidance; it is not a clinical assessment.
Listen, then offer support and a next step
Ask how they see the situation and what kind of help they might accept. Give them room to answer rather than demanding an immediate promise to quit. The CDC’s advice is: “Try to listen without judgment.” It also notes, “You don’t need to have the solution if a friend tells you they are struggling with their mental health or substance use.” Both quotations come from the CDC’s “How to Talk to a Friend About Mental Health or Drugs”, last reviewed March 27, 2026.

If they are open to help, suggest talking with a health professional or finding substance-use services together. In the United States, FindTreatment.gov can help locate treatment, and SAMHSA’s National Helpline is 1-800-662-HELP (4357). You can offer to sit with them while they make a call or look for options.
You can stay supportive while setting firm limits: for example, that you will leave if threats begin, will not ride with them while they are impaired, or will not allow violence in your home. A supportive conversation does not require accepting unsafe behavior. If they are not ready to talk, you can check in later—provided doing so is safe for you.

- CREDIBLE: This test is CLIA Waived for home or over the counter (OTC) use, utilizes the same technology as lab screening tests, and its results are accepted in most professional and clinical settings.
- COMPREHENSIVE: This lab-grade test can detect 14 drugs simultaneously: Buprenorphine (BUP), Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), Opiates (OPI - 2000 ng/mL cut-off level), Amphetamine (AMP), Barbiturates (BAR), Benzodiazepines (BZO), Cocaine (COC), Methamphetamine (MET), Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), Methadone (MTD), Oxycodone (OXY), Phencyclidine (PCP), Propoxyphene (PPX), and Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA).
- ACCURATE: More than 99% accurate, it uses lab-recommended cutoff levels for each drug and includes a temperature strip to verify the temperature of the fresh sample for Specimen Validity Testing.
- EASY TO USE: To use, simply remove the cap, collect urine in the test cup, wait a FULL 5 minutes, and then read the result; disposable plastic gloves are included, a negative result shows two lines, a positive result shows only the control line, a faint test line still means negative, and results should not be read after 5 minutes.
Do not assume cannabis explains a violent act
Research has found associations between cannabis use and violence, but it does not establish that cannabis caused a particular person’s actions. A 2022 scoping review found that the reported relationship varied across populations and that the extent of any causal link remained unclear. A study of 1,089 people detained under a UK mental-health law reported associations involving violent behavior, psychotic symptoms, and recent substance use; its selected emergency psychiatric population cannot establish a general causal effect.
The CDC says cannabis can cause disorientation, anxiety, and paranoia, and that cannabis use is associated with psychosis and other mental-health outcomes. Those general findings do not diagnose an individual or identify the cause of one incident. In conversation, address the behavior and its impact rather than arguing over a cause you cannot establish.

When ongoing cannabis use may warrant professional assessment
The CDC describes cannabis use disorder as being unable to stop using cannabis even when it causes health or social problems. Warning signs can include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Using more cannabis than intended.
- Trying to stop but being unable to do so.
- Cravings.
- Continuing despite problems at home, school, work, or in relationships.
- Giving up important activities.
- Continuing despite physical or psychological problems.
These signs can be a reason to suggest professional assessment; they do not let a friend or family member diagnose someone. The CDC estimated in 2024 that approximately 3 in 10 people who use cannabis have cannabis use disorder. That is a population-level estimate, not a prediction about the person you are concerned about. The CDC also says risk is greater for people who begin using during youth or adolescence and use more frequently.
Recognize a possible cannabis overconsumption emergency
After cannabis use, severe confusion, anxiety, paranoia, panic, a fast heart rate, delusions or hallucinations, and severe nausea or vomiting can be signs of using too much. For suspected overconsumption in the United States, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 for an emergency.
