You can speak to an AI agent in two different ways: use its own voice mode for spoken replies and, where supported, agent actions; or use your laptop’s dictation feature to turn speech into text that you review and submit as a normal prompt. The right choice depends on whether you want a conversation with the agent or simply want to avoid typing.
Choose between voice conversation and dictation
Agent voice mode and laptop dictation are not interchangeable. Voice mode is part of a particular AI experience: it may let you speak with the agent, hear its answer, and interact with supported tools. Dictation puts recognized words into a text field. It does not, by itself, give the agent a spoken reply or permission to carry out tasks.

- Choose the agent’s Voice mode if you want spoken back-and-forth or agent-specific task controls.
- Choose dictation if you only need to speak a prompt into a text box and send it as text.
- Choose a separate voice-control feature if you need to operate the laptop itself by speaking.
Voice features apply only to the products and experiences that support them. For example, OpenAI documents Voice with Work on web and mobile, and with Work or Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS and Windows. That is not a promise that every AI agent on a laptop has voice controls.

Set up voice input for a prompt
On Windows 11
- Open the app and place the cursor in the prompt or message field.
- Press Windows logo key + H, or open the touch keyboard and select its microphone.
- Speak your prompt, then review the text in the field before submitting it.
Voice typing uses online speech recognition. It is separate from supported apps’ voice-activation permissions and from Copilot’s voice conversation feature.

On macOS
- Open the AI app or website and click the prompt field where you want the text to appear.
- Start Dictation with the microphone key or your configured keyboard shortcut.
- Speak, check the inserted text, and submit it when it is accurate.
Apple notes that Dictation availability varies by language and region. If you need spoken commands to control the Mac as well as enter text, consider Voice Control: when Voice Control is on, it can be used to dictate and control the Mac, and standard Dictation is unavailable.
In ChatGPT Voice or dictation
For Work or Codex Voice in the desktop app, select the experience first, then start Voice using its control or a shortcut configured in Settings. Allow microphone access when prompted. If the task needs computer context, the app may also need Screen & Audio Recording and Accessibility permissions. In ChatGPT dictation, speech is transcribed into editable text before it is sent.

On web and mobile, OpenAI says actions requiring approval still need on-screen approval; spoken approval is not supported. Voice does not bypass the tools, permissions, or workspace rules of the selected experience. OpenAI explains that “Voice uses the tools and permissions available to the selected experience.”
Use voice to control the laptop only when the feature supports it
Dictation enters words at the insertion point; it does not generally click buttons, navigate an interface, or authorize an agent’s actions. On a Mac, Voice Control is the distinct feature Apple describes for spoken computer control. On Windows, voice activation is a separate, permissioned facility for supported apps rather than a universal hands-free mode.

Windows Copilot’s “Hey Copilot” is a product-specific wake-word option, not a general command for all agents or apps. Its availability depends on Microsoft’s rollout and the device and account.
Check audio, transcript, and privacy settings
Voice input may involve audio, a transcript, or both, and providers treat these differently. Check the policy and controls for the exact feature and account you use; do not assume that a statement about dictation also applies to live voice conversation.

- ChatGPT Voice: OpenAI says Live and Advanced Voice audio/video clips are stored with the chat transcript and retained for 30 days. After a chat is deleted, associated clips are also deleted within 30 days, subject to stated security, safety, legal, and prior-sharing exceptions. OpenAI says Standard audio is deleted after transcription unless you chose to share it for training. See OpenAI’s Voice policy details.
- ChatGPT dictation: OpenAI says dictation audio remains while the chat is in history and is deleted within 30 days after the chat is deleted, subject to stated exceptions. Consumer audio use for model improvement depends on the sharing choice; OpenAI says business inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. See the dictation FAQ.
- Windows voice typing: Microsoft says it uses online speech recognition and that contributing voice clips is optional. Third-party apps handle data under their own privacy policies. Review Microsoft’s Windows speech privacy information.
- Copilot voice: Microsoft says audio is not stored and voice-chat transcripts are managed like regular Copilot conversations. See Microsoft’s Copilot documentation.
- macOS Dictation: Apple directs users to its privacy controls and says users can choose whether to share audio recordings to improve Siri and Dictation. Check Apple’s current privacy information for your setup rather than assuming processing is local in every language, OS version, or configuration. Apple’s Dictation guide.
Make spoken prompts more reliable
Speech recognition can mishear words. Review the text before sending, especially names, numbers, code, and instructions with real consequences. OpenAI notes that ChatGPT can make mistakes; its dictation workflow gives you editable text before you send it. OpenAI Voice guidance and the dictation FAQ describe the relevant workflows.

- Speak punctuation or formatting instructions when the dictation tool supports them, then inspect the result.
- Break a complicated request into shorter sentences or prompts if the transcription becomes difficult to check.
- For code or exact wording, dictate the explanation but type or carefully verify the parts where one character changes the meaning.
- Try the laptop’s built-in microphone first. A USB headset with a microphone is optional; the cited documentation does not establish that an external headset is required or improves recognition.
