To make future photos smaller, check your Camera app’s settings for Resolution, Picture size, or a megapixel option, then choose a lower setting if your phone offers one. The exact controls vary by phone and camera app. If you need to shrink one existing photo, crop and save a copy instead; if your goal is Google account backup space, use Google Photos’ Storage saver. These options change different things, and none guarantees an exact email attachment size.
First choose what you need to make smaller

Make future photos smaller with a lower resolution
Open your camera app’s settings and look for Resolution, Picture size, or a megapixel choice. If a lower pixel-count option is available, selecting it can reduce detail and often produces less image data. Take a sample photo and check its dimensions and file size in your phone’s details view; the final file size also depends on the scene and how the camera encodes the image.

There is no universal Android menu path for this setting. Camera controls differ by manufacturer, device model, and app. Google’s Pixel Camera guidance is specific to Pixel phones and directs users of other devices to their own support information. A setting such as 4:3 or 16:9 changes the picture’s shape or crop; it is not a maximum file-size control. Google labels Pixel’s options “Full image (4:3)” and “Wide crop (16:9),” while Camera from Google offers these ratios only on certain devices. Neither option promises a consistent reduction in bytes. Reduce one existing photo by cropping a copy
- Open the photo in your phone’s Gallery app.
- Choose Edit, then Crop, and adjust the edges.
- Save the edit as a separate photo if that option is shown.
- Open the saved copy’s details and check its actual file size before attaching it.
Cropping removes parts of the composition from the edited copy; keep the original if you may need the full image later. Android’s Gallery guidance describes saving edits as a separate photo, but does not promise a target byte size or an exact-size compression control. Edit your photos with the Gallery app
Reduce Google Photos backup space with Storage saver
If the problem is Google account storage rather than the size of a local photo, change the backup quality in Google Photos to Storage saver. Google says photos larger than 16 MP are resized to 16 MP; some files may still be stored at original size. Storage saver applies to backed-up media, so do not assume it changes the original file saved on your phone or compresses every item. Free phone storage without changing photo size
Use Settings > Storage to review space and available cleanup options. Moving photos to a computer or to a supported SD card can free device storage, but it changes where files are kept—not their image dimensions. For a strict attachment limit, check the edited file’s actual size before sending. Camera resolution, cropping, and backup quality do not provide a universal Android control for setting an exact target in kilobytes or megabytes. If the result is still too large, you will need an app or service that explicitly offers image compression or resizing to a chosen size; verify its output rather than relying on the crop or aspect-ratio setting alone.
