Choose the right authentication approach
A screenshot API renders a page in a browser and returns image data; it is not the same as downloading page HTML with a plain HTTP client. The right setup depends on whether the signed-in state can be reused or whether each run must perform a login or other interaction.

Option 1: Capture with a saved authenticated profile
Use this approach when you can sign in through an authorized browser session, save its state as a profile, and reuse that state for captures. Browserless documents attaching profiles to REST endpoints including /screenshot. The profile is loaded before the page renders, so the screenshot request does not need to script the login itself.

- Open the target site in a browser session using an authorized account and complete its normal sign-in flow.
- Save the browser state as a profile using the provider’s documented profile workflow. Confirm that the state types your application needs—cookies, localStorage, and/or IndexedDB—are included.
- Send a POST request to the provider’s screenshot endpoint, specifying the target URL, profile, and capture options.
- Inspect the saved image and confirm it shows the intended signed-in content, not a login redirect or access challenge.

The documented request uses a token in the URL; avoid exposing it in source control, logs, or shared command history. The profile also contains authentication state, so restrict access to it as you would to credentials.
Option 2: Log in or interact with the page using Playwright
Use browser automation when the flow must sign in during the run, navigate through multiple steps, or interact with a page before capture. Playwright provides page screenshot methods; Browserless documents Playwright/CDP connections, but the precise connection path and profile/context behavior depend on the provider setup and installed package version. Consult the provider’s current connection documentation before adapting this outline.
- Create or connect to a browser and open a page in the appropriate context.
- Use an authorized login flow, or load the required saved browser state.
- Navigate to the protected URL and wait for a trustworthy signal, such as a dashboard heading or application-specific selector.
- If the page contains lazy-loaded content, scroll the relevant areas into view and wait for that content to appear.
- Capture the page with the desired format and full-page setting, then save or inspect the image.
Do not treat a fixed delay as proof that a page is ready. A page-specific selector or state check is usually a better readiness condition; the exact code depends on the authentication flow and browser connection in your environment.

Choose capture settings for the page
Browserless documents options for viewport and full-page capture, image format, quality, clipping, viewport size, device scale factor, and selector-based capture. - Viewport: Use when the visible screen is the whole deliverable or you need consistent, bounded output.

- Selector or clip: Capture a specific component or region when the whole page is unnecessary.
- Wait and scroll: Wait for the target page state and scroll to trigger lazy loading before capturing content that is not initially rendered.

Verify the result and diagnose failures
Do not rely on the HTTP status alone. Open the returned image and check that it contains the expected account-only content. A successful image response can still show a login redirect, an access-denied screen, a CAPTCHA, a blank page, or a page captured before lazy content appeared.

Protect credentials and use only authorized accounts
Capture only pages and accounts you are authorized to access. Treat API tokens, cookies, localStorage values, IndexedDB contents, and saved profiles as credentials. Store secrets in protected runtime configuration or a secret manager, limit who can access profile state, and avoid printing sensitive values in request logs. If a token or session state is exposed, revoke or rotate it using the provider or application controls.

Plan for reliability and cost
Authenticated screenshots can fail even when the capture call itself succeeds: sessions expire, sites redirect, browser challenges appear, and asynchronous page content may not be ready. Build a verification step into the workflow, and distinguish an actual signed-in capture from a technically successful response containing the wrong screen.

Will a saved browser profile keep working indefinitely?
No such guarantee is established. Application sessions can expire or change, so verify that the profile still reaches the intended signed-in page.
