For a high-quality still from DaVinci Resolve, first decide whether you need a reusable grade reference or a separate image file. On the Color page, place the playhead on the exact frame, right-click the viewer, and choose Grab Still. Resolve stores that still in the Gallery, where it can preserve the reference image and the correction instructions used to recreate the grade. If you need a PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or another standalone file, export the Gallery still afterward and verify the saved image’s pixel dimensions.
If you need the entire timeline composite at delivery size, use the Timeline Viewer and confirm the timeline resolution. If you need a source frame at the clip’s native dimensions, the Source Viewer may be the better route. Viewer-specific behavior and export options can vary by Resolve version, so inspect the result rather than assuming the dimensions or overlays are correct.
Choose the right Resolve workflow first
“Screenshot” can mean three different outputs in Resolve. Choosing the wrong one is the most common cause of a soft or incomplete image.
| What you need | Recommended starting point | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| Grade reference you can reuse on another shot | Color page viewer → Grab Still | A Gallery still containing a reference image and correction instructions, not automatically a normal image file |
| Flat image of the finished edit, including titles, effects, and timeline compositing | Timeline Viewer frame export or a Gallery still created while viewing the finished timeline | An image governed by the timeline’s dimensions; confirm the actual output |
| Source frame at the clip’s own dimensions | Source Viewer frame export, where available in your version | A source-oriented image; a 2023 Blackmagic forum discussion reported source resolution for this route, but it is not a current official specification |
Resolve cannot restore detail that was never present in the source. A larger output dimension can make a file bigger without creating genuine sharpness.

Method 1: Grab a graded still in the Color page
- Open the project and move to the Color page.
- Select the clip and move the playhead to the exact frame you want. Step through frame by frame when a blink, subtitle, or transition makes timing important.
- Make sure the viewer shows the grade and any visible compositing you intend to reference.
- Right-click inside the viewer and choose Grab Still.
- Open the Gallery if it is not already visible. The still appears there for organization, comparison, and reuse.
A Gallery still is more than a pasted screenshot. The DaVinci Resolve 15 Definitive Guide describes it as a reference image that also contains the instructions needed to rebuild that shot’s correction. Use it to compare grades or apply a look; do not treat it as a finished PNG or JPEG until you export it.
Export the Gallery still as an image
- Right-click the still in the Gallery.
- Choose the available export command in your installed Resolve version.
- Select the destination and format offered by that dialog.
- Open the resulting file in an image viewer and inspect its pixel dimensions and appearance.
Menu wording, available formats, bit-depth controls, and quality settings are version-dependent. The accessible official material confirms the Gallery workflow but does not establish the complete current export dialog, so use the labels shown by your installation instead of relying on a version-specific screenshot of the menu.
Method 2: Export a frame from the Source or Timeline Viewer
Some Resolve versions expose an Export Current Frame as Still command from a viewer. The viewer you use matters.
Use the Timeline Viewer for the finished edit
- Open the Edit page (or another page showing the timeline viewer).
- Park the playhead on the required frame.
- Confirm that titles, transitions, adjustment clips, Fusion elements, and other timeline graphics are visible if they belong in the deliverable.
- Use the viewer’s current-frame export command, if available.
- Check the saved file’s width and height against the timeline resolution.
This is the appropriate intent when the screenshot must represent what the timeline delivers. A 2023 Blackmagic Design forum discussion reported that Timeline Viewer export uses timeline resolution. That report is community guidance, not a current specification; verify your own output.

Resolution: prevent an unexpectedly small still
Before exporting, identify the dimension that matters to your destination:
- Timeline deliverable: verify the timeline’s resolution in the project settings and use the Timeline Viewer.
- Native camera frame: verify the clip’s frame dimensions and use the Source Viewer when that is the intended route.
- Social, presentation, or web image: decide the required pixel dimensions first, then avoid scaling beyond what the source can support.
After export, inspect the file properties rather than trusting the viewer size. A viewer can be zoomed, fitted, or displayed on a high-density monitor without changing the file’s actual pixels.
Why a still can look soft
- The timeline is lower resolution than the source clip.
- The image was enlarged after export.
- The source is compressed, out of focus, or affected by motion blur.
- You captured a viewer display rather than exporting the frame, adding operating-system scaling or screen compression.
- A JPEG-style export introduced visible compression at the chosen quality.
Use the largest appropriate source or timeline resolution, but do not describe upscaling as recovered detail.

Make the frame accurate before you capture it
Choose the exact frame
Use frame-by-frame navigation around cuts and animation. Check that a lower-third is fully on screen, a transition has finished, and subtitles are not between rendered positions. If the frame is for color approval, disable temporary viewer overlays that are not part of the picture and confirm that the intended grade is enabled.
Check tonal and color balance with scopes
Resolve’s Color page scopes provide an objective check alongside the viewer. The histogram can reveal clipped highlights and crushed shadows, while waveform and color-oriented scopes show tonal and channel relationships. Scopes help judge the grade; they do not tell you whether the exported file has the right dimensions or compression.

Confirm compositing
Decide whether the still should include timeline graphics, mattes, watermarks, or effects. Viewer routes can differ in what they include, and the available sources do not establish every overlay behavior in current releases. The reliable test is to export one representative frame and compare it with the intended timeline view.
Quality-control checklist after export
- Open the file at 100 percent zoom.
- Confirm width and height in the file properties.
- Check fine detail such as hair, text, and edges for softness or ringing.
- Look for blockiness or mosquito noise in compressed areas.
- Check highlights and shadows for clipping or crushed detail.
- Compare colors with the Resolve viewer under the same display conditions.
- Verify that expected titles, effects, and transparency are present.
- Rename the file with the project, shot, frame or timecode, and revision so it can be traced later.
If your installed export dialog offers a lossless format and the downstream workflow needs pixel preservation, choose it and verify the result. Exact format lists and quality controls differ by Resolve version.
Common problems and fixes
The Gallery still is not a normal image file
Cause: Grab Still creates a Gallery reference. Fix: right-click the Gallery still and use the export command, then inspect the resulting file.
The exported image is lower resolution than expected
Cause: the wrong viewer was used, or the timeline is smaller than the source. Fix: compare source and timeline dimensions, choose the viewer matching the deliverable, and verify the saved file’s pixels. The Source-versus-Timeline distinction is reported by a 2023 forum discussion and may vary by release.
Titles or effects are missing
Cause: a source-frame route does not represent the complete timeline composite. Fix: export from the Timeline Viewer and test a frame containing the graphics you need.

The still looks washed out or too dark outside Resolve
Cause: display-management differences, export encoding, or a mismatch between the viewer and the image application. Fix: compare at 100 percent, check scopes before export, and test the file in the application that will actually use it. Do not infer color accuracy from dimensions alone.
The frame is sharp in Resolve but soft in the file
Cause: scaling, screen capture, source limitations, or compression. Fix: use frame export rather than a monitor screenshot, preserve appropriate dimensions, and inspect the file at 100 percent.
A menu command is missing
Cause: Resolve edition, page, viewer, or version differences. Fix: confirm that the correct viewer is active, check the context menu in your installed build, and use the Gallery route when the viewer command is unavailable.

Still export is usually lightweight compared with rendering a complete movie, but loading a high-resolution source, heavy noise reduction, Fusion composition, or complex timeline effects can make the target frame take time to display. Wait until playback and processing finish before grabbing the still. For repeatable work, keep a short record of the project resolution, source clip, frame or timecode, grade version, and export format.
Gallery stills are useful for an approval history because they retain grading information, while exported image files are easier to deliver to clients or place in documents. Keep both when you need a reproducible grade and a flat reference image.

If what you actually need is a clean screenshot of a web page related to your video workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a single website-screenshot request. It is separate from Resolve’s frame export: it captures a URL, not a frame from your local timeline.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for the current parameters. A cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.
FAQ
Does Grab Still export the current frame immediately to PNG?
No. It creates a still in the Color page Gallery. Export the Gallery still separately when you need a standalone image file.
Should I use the Source Viewer or Timeline Viewer?
Use the Timeline Viewer for a finished edit with timeline compositing; use the Source Viewer when a native source frame is the goal. Confirm the resulting dimensions in your own Resolve version.
Can scopes make an exported screenshot higher resolution?
No. Scopes help evaluate tonal and color balance. They do not increase pixel dimensions or replace inspection of the saved file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recover detail by exporting a larger still?
No. Exporting at larger dimensions cannot recreate detail missing from the source or timeline.
Why keep a Gallery still after delivering an image file?
The Gallery still can retain correction instructions for comparison and grade reuse, while the exported file is the flat image used by other applications.
