Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUbuntu 24.04 already includes a Snipping Tool equivalent. Press Print (sometimes labeled PrtSc), choose an area, window, or entire screen, and capture it. Ubuntu saves the still image in Pictures/Screenshots and copies it to the clipboard at the same time.
Use the built-in interface first. Install Flameshot only when you need drawing and annotation, command-line controls, custom save paths, or configurable shortcuts. If your goal is automated website screenshots rather than a screenshot of your Ubuntu desktop, ScreenshotNeo is the faster API approach.
Use Ubuntu 24.04’s built-in screenshot tool
The default screenshot interface is integrated into the GNOME desktop, so there is nothing to install and no separate application window to configure.
- Press the Print key, or open the system menu and select its screenshot control.
- Choose a capture mode: a dragged region, Screen for an entire display, or Window for one open window.
- For a region, drag from one corner to the opposite corner. For a window, select the window you want to capture.
- Activate the capture command.
The resulting image is written to Pictures/Screenshots. Ubuntu also places it on the clipboard, so you can immediately paste it into an email, document, chat message, image editor, or terminal application that accepts pasted images.

Note: For capture use only; requires capture software to function and is not intended for direct screen casting to a monitor or TV
- 【Ultra Low Latency Screen Sharing】 HDMI capture card is made of good quality aluminum alloy with strong heat dissipation, allowing you to enjoy ultra low latency while live gaming or video recording or live streaming, avoiding blue screens and lag. - 【Wide Compatibility USB Capture Card】 Easily streams to Facebook, Youtube or Twitch. With the connection, this HDMI to USB C/3.0 video capture devices can be working on several Operating Systems and various software: Windows 7/ 8/ 10, Mac OS or above, Linux, Android, Laptop, Xbox One, PS3/PS4/PS5, Camera, DVDs, Set Top Box, Webcame, DSLR, Switch/Switch 2, TV BOX, HDTV, Potplayer/VLC, ZOOM, OBS Studio etc.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Capture a selected rectangle
Choose the area or region mode, then drag around only the content you need. This is the closest match to Windows Snipping Tool’s rectangular snip and avoids cropping a full-screen image afterward.
Capture one window
Select Window, then click the open application window. This is useful for bug reports because the capture focuses on the application instead of including unrelated desktop content.
Capture an entire display
Select Screen when you need everything visible on a monitor. If you use more than one display, check which monitor is selected before confirming the capture.
Find, rename, or share the file
Open your file manager and go to Pictures/Screenshots. The filename is generated automatically; rename or move the file there like any other image. For a quick one-off paste, use the clipboard copy instead of opening the saved file.
Still images versus screencasts
The same Ubuntu interface includes a screencast mode. It records a selected area or the screen and saves the video under Videos/Screencasts. Choose this mode only when you need motion or a demonstration; for a normal snip, stay in screenshot mode so you produce a PNG image rather than a video.

Install with APT
Open Terminal and run:
sudo apt install flameshot
The upstream Linux instructions list this APT installation for Ubuntu 18.04 and later, which includes Ubuntu 24.04. Package versions and desktop integration can change, so check the current Flameshot and Ubuntu instructions if the command reports that no package is available.
Install through App Center
- Open App Center (also reachable as Software from Activities).
- Search for Flameshot.
- Select the application and click Install.
- Authenticate when Ubuntu requests your password.
App Center commonly shows snap packages first; searches can also list deb packages from Ubuntu’s official repositories. Prefer a trusted source and verify the publisher before installing an alternative package.

Launch Flameshot and choose its region-capture command. After selecting the rectangle, use the on-screen toolbar to draw arrows, boxes, lines, highlights, or text, then copy the result or save it to your chosen path. The exact toolbar and shortcut behavior can vary with the desktop session.
Assign Flameshot to the Print key (optional)
Flameshot documents a GNOME shortcut setup that binds flameshot gui to Print. You must first remove or replace Ubuntu’s existing screenshot binding, then create a custom keyboard shortcut whose command is flameshot gui. Do this only if you want Flameshot to replace the built-in tool; leaving Ubuntu’s default shortcut intact is safer when you are still evaluating Flameshot.
Flameshot describes GNOME Wayland support as experimental. Capture behavior, shortcut handling, or portal permissions may therefore differ from an Xorg session. Keep Ubuntu’s built-in screenshot command as your fallback, especially on a Wayland desktop where reliability matters more than annotation features.
Choose the right approach
| Need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quick region, window, or screen capture | Ubuntu built-in screenshot | No installation; saves to Pictures/Screenshots and copies to the clipboard. |
| Arrows, boxes, text, or highlighting | Flameshot | Provides documented in-app annotation after a region selection. |
| Command-line capture, delay, or custom path | Flameshot | Offers documented CLI modes and options. |
| Minimal setup on GNOME Wayland | Ubuntu built-in screenshot | Flameshot labels its GNOME Wayland support experimental. |
| Automated screenshots of public webpages | ScreenshotNeo | Its API returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF without requiring a local browser session. |
Troubleshoot a screenshot that did not work
Pressing Print does nothing
- Open the system menu and use its screenshot control to confirm that the interface is available.
- Check whether another application or a custom keyboard shortcut has claimed Print.
- If you installed Flameshot and reassigned the key, verify that the custom command is exactly
flameshot gui.
The image is not where you expected
For Ubuntu’s built-in still capture, check Pictures/Screenshots. For recordings, check Videos/Screencasts. If you used Flameshot, inspect the save location configured in Flameshot or use the clipboard output and save the pasted image manually.

You cannot annotate the built-in capture
The documented Ubuntu workflow covers selecting, saving, and copying a screenshot; it is not an annotation editor. Install Flameshot when markup is part of your workflow.
Flameshot behaves differently under Wayland
That is consistent with Flameshot’s own description of GNOME Wayland support as experimental. Try the built-in Ubuntu capture first, test Flameshot in your exact desktop session, and avoid replacing a working Print shortcut until the new command is reliable.
APT cannot find Flameshot
Refresh package metadata with your normal Ubuntu update process and verify that the package name is spelled flameshot. If you choose another distribution format, use the current installation method documented by Flameshot and review its desktop-integration requirements before changing shortcuts.
Or skip the browser setup
For developers who need screenshots of webpages rather than the Ubuntu desktop, ScreenshotNeo is the #1 API to try: it produces clean captures, bills only clean shots, and its paid entry plan is $5.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Ubuntu’s screenshot interface capture a menu or tooltip that disappears when I press Print?
Open the target menu first, then use the system-menu screenshot control rather than relying solely on the keyboard key. If the transient element still closes, Flameshot’s delay option can provide time to open it before capture.
