How to Take Full-Page Screenshots with Developer Tools

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the browser’s full-page command, not its ordinary viewport command. In Chrome, open DevTools and choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot. Firefox can use its enabled full-page toolbar button or :screenshot --fullpage in the Web Console. Edge’s Screenshot feature captures a full webpage or a selected area. These commands save what the browser rendered, including content below the visible viewport.

The exact labels and behavior can change with browser version, device type, market and page code. Set the intended viewport first, wait for important content, and inspect the resulting image rather than assuming every dynamic page rendered perfectly.

Chrome DevTools: capture the entire document

1. Open DevTools and set the capture context

  1. Open the page you want to capture.
  2. Open Chrome DevTools (for example, with the browser’s Developer Tools command).
  3. When you need a particular responsive layout, turn on the device toolbar and set the responsive width before capturing. Chrome documents presets including 320 px, 375 px, 425 px, 768 px, 1024 px, 1440 px and 2560 px.

Device Mode is a simulated viewport. It changes the dimensions and rendering context used for the capture; it does not turn the computer into a physical phone or tablet.

2. Choose the full-size command

  1. Open the DevTools More options menu.
  2. Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
  3. Wait for Chrome to finish creating the image, then open the downloaded file and check the bottom and any lazy sections.

Capture screenshot is the viewport-only command. It includes what is visible in the current viewport, while Capture a full size screenshot includes document content outside that viewport. Selecting the wrong menu item is the most common reason a supposedly full-page image is short.

Firefox Developer Tools: button, console and element captures

Enable the full-page toolbar button

  1. Open Firefox Developer Tools and its settings.
  2. Find Available Toolbox Buttons.
  3. Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  4. Use the new screenshot icon in the DevTools toolbar. Firefox saves the image to Downloads.

Firefox also has a Screenshot to clipboard setting. When enabled, the capture is copied as well as saved.

Run the Web Console helper

For repeatable options, open the Web Console and use the :screenshot helper:

:screenshot --fullpage --filename=full-page.png

The documented switches let you control the capture without changing browser preferences:

  • --fullpage captures content beyond the window bounds.
  • --clipboard copies the result to the clipboard.
  • --delay=2 waits two seconds before capture, useful for a menu or hover state that must appear.
  • --dpr=2 sets the device-pixel ratio for a higher-density image (use the value appropriate to your test).
  • --file forces file output.
  • --filename=custom-name.png chooses the PNG filename.
  • --selector="main" captures the selected element and its descendants instead of the whole document.

Reusing a filename overwrites the previous image. Give each capture a different name when building a sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capture one DOM element

To capture a region visually and semantically, select the element in the Inspector’s HTML pane, open its context menu and choose Screenshot Node. The console form, :screenshot --selector="main", is useful when the same selector must be captured repeatedly.

Microsoft Edge: full page or selected area

  1. Open the page in Edge.
  2. Start Screenshot from the page’s right-click menu, Edge Settings, or the Ctrl+Shift+S shortcut.
  3. Choose a full webpage capture or drag a selected area.
  4. Use the overlay to add pen or touch markup if needed.
  5. Choose Copy or Save.

Edge’s Screenshot feature is designed for long or moving webpages, including content you would normally have to scroll to see. A copied image can be pasted into Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OneNote. Microsoft notes that availability and functionality can vary by device type, market and browser version, so a missing menu may be a version or rollout difference rather than a page problem.

Which developer-tool method fits your job?

Browser Whole-page command Region or element capture Extra controls documented Output behavior
Chrome More options > Capture a full size screenshot The cited DevTools procedure focuses on viewport and full-size capture. Responsive Device Mode widths and simulated device-pixel ratio. Capture is created by DevTools; the cited procedure does not specify a destination.
Firefox Enabled Take a screenshot of the entire page button or :screenshot --fullpage. Screenshot Node or --selector. Delay, DPR, filename, clipboard and forced file output. Saves to Downloads; can also copy to clipboard.
Edge Screenshot with full webpage selected. Selected-area capture. Pen or touch markup; supports long or moving pages. Copy or save from the overlay.

For a one-off visual check, use the browser already open on the page. Firefox exposes the most command-line-like controls, Chrome makes responsive width testing straightforward, and Edge combines capture with annotation. None of these commands guarantees that an application’s dynamic state, cross-origin frame or canvas will match a manually scrolled series of images.

Make the rendered page ready before you capture

Wait for content that appears late

Lazy images, client-side components and animations can still be changing when the command runs. Scroll through the page once if necessary to trigger loading, pause an animation or use Firefox’s --delay option, then capture. Check the image for missing sections instead of trusting its height alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the width before the page reflows

A full-page image is only “full” for the viewport and zoom context in which it was rendered. Set the responsive width before capturing a desktop, tablet or narrow layout. If the page must be documented at several widths, use distinct filenames and record each width.

Expect browser-rendered limitations

  • Sticky headers may appear repeatedly or at an unexpected scroll state.
  • Animated content can show a different frame on each run.
  • Cross-origin frames and application-specific canvases may not reproduce exactly.
  • Bot checks, login redirects, blank responses and failed resources can produce an image that is technically full-size but not useful.

These are rendering conditions, not evidence that the full-page command was ignored. Open the saved image and compare important regions with the live page.

Troubleshooting full-page captures

Only the visible viewport was saved

In Chrome, choose Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot. In Firefox, enable the entire-page button or include --fullpage. In Edge, select the full webpage option instead of a rectangular area.

The full-page button is missing in Firefox

Open DevTools settings, locate Available Toolbox Buttons, and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page. The icon does not appear until that preference is enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The bottom of the page is blank or images are absent

The browser captured the document as it was rendered at that moment. Trigger lazy loading by scrolling, wait for network activity and capture again. If a page requires interaction or authentication, perform it in the same tab before starting the screenshot.

A Firefox capture replaced an earlier file

Firefox overwrites an existing file when the filename is reused. Change --filename for every run, such as home-1440-01.png and home-1440-02.png.

The layout is the wrong size

Set the intended responsive width before capturing. Chrome Device Mode is a simulation, so validate critical mobile behavior on the target physical device as well as in the simulated screenshot.

When a browser command is not enough

Built-in tools are free and practical for interactive inspection, but they require a person to open a browser, establish a session, set the viewport and verify the output. For scheduled, bulk or server-side work, an HTTP screenshot service can make those steps explicit and repeatable.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

One-call examples

See the full parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Replace the URL with the page you need.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Controls available for a production capture

  • Full-page capture with lazy images loaded, or one element by CSS selector.
  • Dark mode, 12 device presets, any custom viewport and retina scale.
  • PDF output with paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges.
  • HTML/CSS-to-image rendering, custom CSS and JavaScript, and a click before capture.
  • Hide selectors; wait for a selector, a delay or network idle.
  • Block ads, trackers, requests or resource types.
  • Send custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization values.
  • Set timezone and geolocation, use a transparent background or resize the image.
  • Cache with a TTL you choose, create signed links for public <img> tags, and submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks.
  • Capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call, inspect usage through the usage API, and generate against the OpenAPI specification.
  • Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can reduce migration changes.

An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients, so an AI agent can request a capture without custom browser wiring.

FAQ

Can I capture a page after signing in?

Yes. Sign in and complete any required interactions in the same browser tab before invoking the developer-tool command. The screenshot reflects the authenticated state that is currently rendered; if the session expires, you may capture a login or error page instead.

What should I record alongside a screenshot used as evidence?

Keep the URL, browser and version, viewport width, device-pixel-ratio setting, capture date and the exact command or menu choice. Those details make a later difference in layout or dynamic content explainable.

Is a full-page image automatically a reliable visual-regression baseline?

Only after you control changing inputs such as animation, lazy loading, authentication and responsive width. Compare repeated captures and exclude regions whose content is intentionally time-dependent.
