To convert a screenshot to JPG for free, open it in an image editor already on your device and export or save a copy as JPEG. On Windows, use Paint; on Mac, use Preview. On a phone, look for a JPEG export option in the gallery or an image editor, or transfer the file to a computer. Don’t just rename a .png file to .jpg: that changes the name, not the image format.
Convert a screenshot to JPG on Windows
Paint can convert an existing screenshot without an online converter or paid software. Save a copy if you want to keep the original PNG unchanged.
- Open Paint. Choose File > Open, then select the screenshot.
- Choose File > Save as.
- Select JPEG picture or the JPEG/JPG option shown in the file-type list.
- Choose a destination and filename, then save.
- Check that the new file ends in
.jpgor.jpegand opens as expected.
Windows screenshots often start as PNG. For example, Windows 11 saves a screenshot taken with Windows key + Print Screen in Pictures > Screenshots as a PNG. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11: press Windows logo key + Shift + S to take a snip, then use the Save as control to save it. The exact interface can vary; Paint’s Save as file-type selector is the part that converts an existing image to JPEG.
If you have not taken the screenshot yet, the Snipping Tool can capture a freeform, rectangular, window, or full-screen snip. Microsoft describes the captured snip as opening in the Snipping Tool window, where you can make changes, save, and share. To choose JPEG for an existing screenshot, open that image in Paint and select JPEG in Save as.

Convert a screenshot to JPG on a Mac
Use Preview to export a copy of the image as JPEG. Preview’s controls can differ between macOS versions, so check the format selector rather than assuming every version presents identical options.
- Open the screenshot in Preview.
- Choose File > Export, or the export option available in your version of Preview.
- Set Format to JPEG if that choice is available.
- Choose a name and destination, then save the exported copy.
- Confirm the saved file has a
.jpgor.jpegextension and opens correctly.
If you do not see JPEG in Preview’s export options, open the screenshot in another free image editor that offers JPEG export. Keep the original if preserving its exact quality matters.
Convert a screenshot on iPhone or iPad
iPhone and iPad screenshots are managed in Photos, but the available screenshot controls depend on iOS or iPadOS version. Apple documents screenshot preview, editing, sharing, and saving, and identifies the Photos location as Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. Those instructions do not establish a universal built-in Photos command to save any screenshot as JPG.
- Find the screenshot in Photos. In the documented Photos layout, open Collections > Media Types > Screenshots.
- Use the share control to open or send the image to an editor that offers JPEG export.
- In that editor, choose its JPEG/JPG export or save-a-copy option, if available.
- Check the resulting file’s format and keep the original if image quality or an untouched copy matters.
If the editor you have does not offer JPEG export, transfer the image to a Mac or Windows computer and use Preview or Paint. Do not assume a screenshot capture setting that mentions SDR or HDR is the same as exporting an existing screenshot to JPG.

Convert a screenshot on Android
Android gallery menus vary by device manufacturer and app version, so there is no reliable universal sequence of menu names. Try the device’s gallery or image editor first:
- Open the screenshot in the gallery or photo editor.
- Look for Edit, Export, or Save a copy.
- If the app offers a format choice, select JPEG or JPG and save a copy.
- Verify the new file type. If the app has no JPEG option, transfer the screenshot to a computer and export it using Paint or Preview.
Menu labels and format choices depend on the device and installed apps. If the image contains personal information, prefer a local editor over an unfamiliar website that asks you to upload it.
What JPG changes—and what it does not
JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format. Exporting a PNG screenshot as JPEG creates a new image encoded in a different format; changing only the filename extension does not. Use the editor’s file-type selector or export format option to perform a real conversion.
- JPEG is lossy. The export can change fine text, sharp edges, or other details. The appearance depends on image content and the editor’s export settings.
- Do not expect a guaranteed size reduction. The resulting file size depends on the image and settings; there is no universal amount of savings.
- Transparency is not preserved as transparency in a standard JPEG. If the source uses transparent areas, check how the editor renders them before relying on the exported image.
- Keep the original when fidelity matters. Export a copy rather than overwriting the only source, especially when you may need to edit or re-export later.
If an upload form specifically requires JPG/JPEG, provide a file actually exported in that format. If it accepts PNG and the screenshot includes small text or crisp interface elements, keeping the PNG may avoid an unnecessary lossy conversion.

Choose a method: existing image or new website capture

Troubleshooting a JPG conversion
The saved file still appears to be PNG
Check the file-type selector in the export or Save as dialog. Typing a name ending in .jpg is not enough if the editor is still saving PNG data. Export again with JPEG/JPG selected, then inspect the resulting file.

The image looks softer or text looks different
JPEG is lossy, so some visual change is possible, especially around fine text and sharp interface edges. Use the original PNG where the receiving service accepts it, or choose a higher-quality JPEG setting if the editor offers one. Preserve the source so you can make another copy with different settings.
The file will not upload
Confirm both that the file is genuinely JPEG and that the destination accepts the image’s dimensions and size. Changing the extension alone will not make an image conform to an upload requirement. If the form accepts only a particular kind of image, follow its stated requirements rather than guessing at a size or quality target.
The phone has no JPEG export option
Use a different image editor that explicitly supports JPEG export, or move the screenshot to a computer and export it in Paint or Preview. Before uploading the screenshot to an online converter, consider whether it contains private information and review how that service handles uploaded files.
Preview or Paint shows different labels
App interfaces change. In Paint, locate the Save as file-type choice; in Preview, look for an Export format choice. If the expected JPEG option is absent, use another editor with a JPEG export option rather than renaming the file.
