Open Photo Mode, compose the scene, and save the image using the controls for your platform. The best results usually come from deciding what the picture should show before adjusting the camera: a clear subject, a deliberate background, and lighting or weather that supports the mood. The steps below cover the documented shortcuts and file locations, then explain how to use the available Photo Mode tools to shape a stronger frame.
Open Photo Mode and find your screenshots
CD PROJEKT RED’s support article, “Photo Mode — The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,” lists these controls and destinations. The page was updated seven months before October 13, 2026. Console system menus may change, and the support article does not distinguish console generations.

| Platform | Open Photo Mode | Where to find the screenshot |
|---|---|---|
| PC | Press U. | %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshots |
| PlayStation | Press L3 + R3 together. | Settings → Storage → System Storage → Capture Gallery → The Witcher 3 |
| Xbox | Press LS + RS together. | Xbox button → Capture & share → Recent captures |
On a console, look in the system’s Capture Gallery or Recent captures area if the labels or menu route differ from the support article. The documented routes identify where to look; they do not provide a full button-by-button map for the capture action itself.
Once Photo Mode is open, use the controls shown in your installed game to capture. This distinction matters: the shortcut above opens the in-game camera mode, while a controller’s system capture command is a separate platform feature. If you used a console system capture command instead of the game’s Photo Mode capture action, check the console’s general capture library rather than assuming the image is filed with the game’s Photo Mode screenshots.

Build the image before adjusting settings
Photo Mode gives you control over the camera and, in the expanded version described by CD PROJEKT RED’s 2026 Remastered notes, several aspects of the scene. These are tools, not automatic composition fixes. A useful starting point is to decide what the viewer should notice first, then remove distractions that compete with it.
Choose a moment with a readable subject
Pause on a moment where Geralt, a monster, or another focal subject has a recognizable outline. Check that the subject is not merged with a similarly colored wall, tree, or patch of sky. A small camera move can separate overlapping shapes and make the pose easier to read.
Give the subject room in the frame. If Geralt is looking or moving in one direction, leaving some open space that way can make the image feel intentional rather than cramped. For a portrait, place the subject more centrally and keep the background simple. For an environmental image, allow more of the location to show and make sure the foreground leads into, rather than blocks, the subject.
Use foreground and background to establish place
A screenshot can communicate more than “Geralt is standing here.” Include a landmark, architecture, landscape, or another environmental clue when the location is part of the story you want to tell. A foreground object can add depth, but if it covers the subject or draws the eye more strongly than the subject, move the camera or exclude it.
Inspect the whole frame, not only its center. Look near the edges for a stray character, a bright patch, a cut-off object, or an awkward line passing through a face. The camera can make a scene feel polished even when its ingredients are ordinary; a few seconds spent checking the borders can prevent a distracting crop.
Decide on the image’s purpose first
Before changing options, decide whether you are making a character portrait, an action-like pose, or a view that emphasizes the surrounding location. This choice helps you make consistent decisions: a portrait generally needs a readable face or silhouette, while an environmental frame needs enough space to show where the subject is. If you try to make every element equally prominent, the image may lack a clear point of attention.
It can help to compare two versions of the same moment rather than committing to the first framing. Try a closer and wider view, or a different aspect ratio, then check which one tells the intended story more clearly. This is a practical comparison, not a requirement to use a particular composition style; the game’s tools let you explore alternatives, while the best choice depends on what you want the image to communicate.

Move, orient, and lock the camera deliberately
Move the camera until the subject’s silhouette and the important parts of the setting are both legible. Then adjust its orientation to control what appears behind the subject. If the camera keeps drifting away from your intended view, use camera lock if the option is available. Camera presets can be useful starting positions, but inspect the result rather than assuming a preset suits the scene.
Do not default to a close-up. A tighter view emphasizes expression, armor, or a pose; a wider view can explain the environment and show scale. Try both when the moment allows, then choose according to the image’s purpose. A portrait benefits from a clear face or silhouette, while a location-focused image needs enough setting to make its context visible.
Choose an aspect ratio for the destination
Use the aspect-ratio setting to match the shape of the image to where you intend to display it. A wide frame can preserve a landscape or architectural view; a taller or squarer crop can give a single character more space. Changing the ratio changes what fits at the edges, so recheck the subject, horizon, and background after selecting it.
If the rule-of-thirds overlay is available, use it as a guide rather than a rule. It can help position a face, horizon, or landmark away from the exact center, but centered compositions can still work when the scene is symmetrical or the subject calls for it. Cinematic bars alter the visible frame; check that they do not hide a detail you meant to include.
Try first-person view for a different point of view
The expanded Photo Mode feature list includes a first-person camera. It can make a scene feel closer to Geralt’s perspective, but it also changes the purpose of the image: the focus shifts from showing Geralt to showing what he sees. If your goal is to feature his appearance, armor, or pose, use a view that keeps him visible instead.
Control the scene around the subject
The Remastered notes describe tools for simplifying or staging a scene, including hiding nearby NPCs, choosing environment presets, placing characters, selecting poses and expressions, and adding props. They also list controls for weather and time of day, including weather intensity. Availability of each feature is not itemized for every platform or build.
Remove distractions or stage a deliberate interaction
Hide nearby non-player characters when they clutter the frame or draw attention away from the subject. If the scene needs other people, use character placement and pose options where available to make their relationship to the main subject clear. For example, a second character can create a sense of confrontation or companionship, but an unrelated figure at the edge can look accidental.

Adjust weather and time to support the mood
Change weather or time of day when the current conditions obscure the subject or conflict with the feeling you want. The notes also mention weather intensity, which can help you tune how strongly a weather effect reads. After changing these options, check whether the subject and background still separate clearly; atmosphere should add to the frame without swallowing its focal point.
Environment presets can provide a quick alternative to the current scene’s look. Treat them as starting points, then assess the complete image: the subject, the background, and any staged elements. A preset that looks striking in isolation may not suit the pose or location you are framing.
Use camera collision controls when an object blocks the view
The updated Photo Mode includes a setting to enable or disable camera collisions with walls and objects. If a wall or nearby object prevents the intended camera position, changing this setting may let you frame through or around the obstruction. Verify the result afterward: moving through geometry can create an unintended view or make the image feel disconnected from the scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCapture the image and verify the file
- Finish the frame. Review the subject, background, edges, aspect ratio, and any scene adjustments in the Photo Mode interface.
- Use the capture action shown in your installed game. The official support article documents how to open Photo Mode and where its screenshots are stored, but not a complete capture-button map.
- Open the platform-specific destination. On PC, check the documented screenshots folder; on consoles, use the capture interface listed above or its current equivalent.
- If the file is missing, check the right library. Confirm whether you used the in-game Photo Mode capture action or the console’s system-level capture command, then search the corresponding game-specific or general capture area.
For PC, paste the documented folder path into File Explorer’s address bar, replacing %userprofile% with the Windows account’s user-profile location if needed. On PlayStation or Xbox, the menu route may vary with system software; use the console’s search or capture-library navigation to locate The Witcher 3’s captures.
If you are unsure whether a capture succeeded, first identify which capture action you used. Photo Mode’s opening shortcut is not itself the documented capture-button sequence. The official material reviewed names the Photo Mode entry shortcuts and file destinations, but leaves the capture action to the controls presented in the installed game. For system-level captures, use the console’s broader capture library rather than searching only the game’s Photo Mode folder.
Balance graphics settings against the shot you want
CD PROJEKT RED’s version 4.0 change notes describe both PC ULTRA+ settings and console graphics modes. These options affect scene appearance or the game’s performance target, but the notes do not prescribe a universally best screenshot setting. The right choice depends on the scene and on whether you value a particular visual detail or smoother play while arranging the shot.
PC: what ULTRA+ changes
On PC, the official notes say ULTRA+ affects the following elements:
Recommended Free Tools
- Number of background characters
- Shadows
- Grass density
- Texture quality
- Foliage visibility range
- Terrain
- Water
- Detail
These settings can change what appears in a particular frame. More background characters may add life to a town but make a portrait busier; shadows, textures, foliage, terrain, water, and detail may influence how a specific scene looks. Decide what matters in the image you are making instead of treating a preset as a guaranteed improvement. The cited notes do not establish a single best setting for every screenshot.

Consider the subject and location when comparing settings. A town scene may benefit from visible background characters if they support the sense of place, while the same characters may compete with a solitary portrait. A landscape frame may make grass, foliage, terrain, and water more noticeable than a close-up. Check the actual composition after changing a setting rather than assuming the change will matter equally in every view.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X
The version 4.0 notes describe two modes for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X:
| Mode | Documented target | What the notes establish |
|---|---|---|
| Ray Tracing Mode | 30 FPS target | A named graphics mode with a 30 FPS target. |
| Performance Mode | 60 FPS target | A named graphics mode with a 60 FPS target. |
Those frame-rate targets describe game modes, not a universal ranking for still-image quality. The cited material does not state that one mode produces better screenshots in every scene.
Xbox Series S
The same version 4.0 notes say Xbox Series S has no ray-tracing features. Its Quality Mode targets 30 FPS and prioritizes image fidelity; Performance Mode targets 60 FPS and prioritizes smoothness. These are the documented mode priorities and targets, not a promise that every captured frame will look better in one mode regardless of subject or setting.
In short, distinguish the documented target from a screenshot guarantee. The mode descriptions explain the game’s performance and image-fidelity priorities, but the sources do not give a universal still-image recommendation. Select a mode based on what you want while playing and arranging the shot, then judge the result in your specific scene.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why an option may be missing
CD PROJEKT RED’s support page focuses on Photo Mode activation and screenshot destinations. Its 2026 Remastered notes describe a substantially expanded feature set, but do not provide a complete platform-by-platform list of which feature appears in each game version. If an option mentioned here is not on your screen, check the controls and menus in your installed build rather than assuming your platform is malfunctioning.
The feature list is broad: camera lock and presets, aspect-ratio changes, first-person view, a rule-of-thirds overlay and cinematic bars, NPC hiding, weather and time adjustments, weather intensity, environment presets, character placement, poses, expressions, collision controls, and props. The lack of a platform-by-platform matrix means these features should not be treated as a promise that every listed control appears on every platform or build. Use the available menu as the authority for your installation.
For older PC players, NVIDIA’s August 16, 2016 article about Ansel describes an alternative historical workflow with free-camera movement, framing, filters, and high-resolution capture. Its setup guidance refers to the game’s 1.24-era update and period software. Present-day availability and compatibility are not established by that article, so it should not be treated as the default current method for taking screenshots.
Best Value
The standard documented workflow does not require an extra product: Photo Mode and the platform’s capture tools are the relevant tools. A capture card, special camera, upgraded controller, external storage device, graphics card, editing program, or book is not required by the official instructions covered here.
A quick pre-capture checklist
- Is the main subject immediately clear, with a readable outline?
- Does the background identify the setting without competing with the subject?
- Have you checked the edges for cut-off objects, unwanted figures, or distracting bright areas?
- Does the aspect ratio suit the image’s intended use?
- Do the pose, expression, weather, time of day, and any props support the same visual idea?
- Have you used the capture action shown in the game, then checked the correct platform library?

The Remastered notes list expanded features, but the official material reviewed does not provide a full platform-by-platform feature matrix. If an option such as props, weather intensity, first-person view, or camera collision controls is missing, check the menus in your installed version rather than assuming the option is available everywhere.
Which graphics mode is best for screenshots?
The cited notes do not identify one universally best mode for still images. PS5 and Xbox Series X have Ray Tracing Mode with a 30 FPS target and Performance Mode with a 60 FPS target. Xbox Series S has no ray-tracing features; Quality Mode targets 30 FPS and prioritizes image fidelity, while Performance Mode targets 60 FPS and prioritizes smoothness. Judge the result in the scene you are capturing.
Do I need special hardware or software to take screenshots?
No additional product is required for the documented workflow. Use the game’s Photo Mode and your platform’s capture tools. The reviewed official instructions do not require a capture card, special camera, upgraded controller, graphics card, external storage, or editing program.
