A large camera sensor can help a phone create stronger background separation, but it will not choose the right subject, focus point, exposure, or moment for you. To get better photos, place your subject deliberately, tap to focus, steady the phone in low light, and treat portrait blur and resolution as tools—not automatic quality upgrades.
Use the sensor’s depth-of-field potential deliberately
A larger sensor can produce shallower depth of field in practical comparisons, while a wider aperture—shown by a smaller f-number—also makes depth of field shallower when other conditions are held constant. These are general camera principles, not a guarantee that any particular phone will deliver a specific amount of blur or better low-light results. Make background separation visible
- Move your subject farther in front of the background rather than placing them directly against it.
- Choose a clean background and check the frame edges for distracting lines or objects.
- Tap the important detail—such as an eye or a product label—so focus lands where it matters.
- If natural blur is not enough, try Portrait or depth controls if your phone offers them. Inspect hair, glasses, leaves, and other intricate edges for artificial-looking blur. The available controls and names vary by phone; Apple documents Portrait options for supported iPhones in its iPhone Portrait guide.
Set focus and exposure before you shoot
Phones typically choose focus and exposure automatically, but the automatic choice may not match your intention. On iPhone, Apple documents tapping the screen to move focus and adjust exposure; holding the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears locks those settings for subsequent shots. The exact controls differ across models and camera apps. See Apple’s iPhone camera guide.

- Frame the shot, then tap the subject or detail you want sharp.
- Adjust exposure if needed: lower it when bright areas lose detail, or raise it when the subject is too dark.
- Review the whole frame and reposition the phone if distracting edges or background clutter compete with the subject.
- On supported iPhones, press and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears when you want focus and exposure to stay fixed for upcoming shots.
Keep the phone still in low light
Low light makes camera steadiness especially important. On supported iPhone models, Night mode automatically brightens photos and captures more detail in low light; Apple advises holding the phone still during capture and notes that a tripod can help produce more detailed Night mode photos. Other phones may offer Night mode under a different name or with different behavior. Read Apple’s Night mode instructions.

Match the technique to the subject
- Static scene: Brace the phone against a stable surface or use a phone tripod, and keep it still until capture finishes.
- Moving subject: A long Night mode capture can blur movement even when the phone itself is steady. Try a brighter moment or a faster capture option if your phone provides one.
Troubleshoot close-up blur and lens switching
At close range, a phone may switch camera modules, changing the view or causing sudden blur. Apple documents this behavior on supported iPhones: the camera can switch to the Ultra Wide camera for macro photography, at distances as close as 2 centimeters. That distance applies to the supported iPhone feature, not phones generally. If a close-up turns blurry, back up slightly and check which camera is active; on the supported iPhone example, Apple says users can tap .5x to switch to Ultra Wide. Choose resolution and processing for the photo you need
Higher resolution can provide more room to crop or edit, but megapixels alone do not determine whether a photo looks better. On supported iPhones, Apple documents 12 MP or 24 MP default resolution options and 48 MP capture on supported models. It also describes controls that affect processing, lens correction, and capture speed.
