For routine cleaning, brush away dry dirt, gently spot-clean only with a method suited to that material, and let the shoes air-dry at room temperature. Conditioner and water-repellent treatments are optional—not one-size-fits-all.
1. Check the leather and the maker’s instructions
“Leather sneaker” can mean smooth, oiled, waterproof, suede, nubuck, or a combination of materials. Those finishes do not all take the same cleaner or treatment. Check the shoe’s care label, product page, or manufacturer’s care guide before applying liquid, conditioner, or spray. SOREL’s care guide separates instructions by leather type, while OAO’s guide notes that care varies by product and material.

For sneakers with mixed-material panels, treat each area according to its material and use methods compatible with the whole shoe. If the finish is patent, coated, or otherwise unusual and the maker gives no clear directions, do not guess at a cleaner or treatment.
2. Brush off loose dirt before cleaning
Remove laces if they are in the way, then use a soft, dry brush to lift dust and grit from the upper. A soft-bristle shoe brush is a useful basic tool; a clean, soft toothbrush can work for small areas. SOREL advises brushing sneakers dry first, and Saucony’s care guide also recommends a soft-bristle brush for leather. Removing grit before adding moisture helps avoid grinding particles against the surface; Nikwax recommends regular cleaning because dirt can abrade leather fibers. Nikwax footwear care

3. Clean the upper gently
Use the least intensive method that suits the specific finish. Avoid soaking the shoe or scrubbing hard as a default: the maker guidance here favors brushing, damp cloths, and gentle dabbing.
Waterproof leather
SOREL’s directions for waterproof leather are to brush away dirt, wipe with a damp cloth, and dry in a cool, dry place. Follow your own sneaker maker’s instructions if they differ.

Oiled or dry-tanned leather
SOREL advises removing loose dirt with a dry cloth, applying a little leather cleaner, wiping away residue with a damp cloth, and drying in a cool, dry place. Do not assume this cleaner-based method suits a different leather finish.

For sneakers whose care instructions allow it, SOREL recommends gently dabbing stains with a washcloth and soap-and-water solution or another mild detergent. Remove laces when useful and clean them separately with a mild solution; wipe them dry with a cloth. Clean the midsole and outsole separately with a soft brush and mild solution so dirt from the sole is not worked into the upper.

Suede and nubuck
Use a soft brush made for suede or nubuck, as SOREL advises. Do not apply smooth-leather cleaner or conditioner directions to these materials unless the shoe maker and product label specifically say they are suitable.
4. Air-dry slowly, away from heat
After cleaning, let sneakers dry fully at room temperature. Keep them away from radiators, hair dryers, and strong sunlight. Nikwax warns that excessive heat can irreversibly damage leather and harm footwear adhesives; Lacoste’s shoe-care advice likewise cautions against direct heat and strong sun.

If shoes are thoroughly wet, remove the laces and insoles if practical, then loosely stuff the shoes with absorbent newspaper. Replace the paper as it becomes wet and leave the shoes to air-dry. Nikwax and Saucony both recommend newspaper as an aid while footwear dries.

Cleaning, conditioning, and water repellency are different jobs. A treatment is not a required finishing step for every pair, and a water-repellent product does not make every sneaker waterproof.

- Conditioner: Nikwax describes conditioning as useful for smooth leather that is new or dried out, and suggests doing so a few times a year or as needed. OAO says conditioner choice differs for smooth leather versus suede or nubuck. Check the sneaker maker’s instructions and the conditioner label before use.
- Water repellent: Lacoste recommends a suitable waterproofing spray before first wear as general maker guidance. That is not evidence that every spray suits every finish. Confirm compatibility with the shoe maker and follow the treatment label.
- After treatment: Nikwax says its approach is to reapply water repellency as needed or after severe conditions, and to let treated footwear dry for 24 hours before use. These directions are specific to its footwear-care guidance; follow the instructions for the product you choose.
6. Rotate pairs and store them dry
When practical, avoid wearing the same pair several days in a row. Lacoste recommends giving shoes a rest and storing them somewhere dry, away from sunlight and humidity. Clean absorbent paper can help during drying; for storage, use a method that keeps the shoes dry and in shape without exposing them to heat or dampness.
