For a batch of URLs, use Playwright to navigate to each page, save a screenshot, and limit how many captures run at once. Playwright Test’s workers setting limits test-runner processes; it does not automatically distribute an arbitrary URL list in a standalone script. For that, create a bounded queue or express each URL as test work.
Choose the right kind of worker
There are two useful approaches, depending on how your batch is organized:

- Standalone URL list: Write a script that reads the URLs and schedules a fixed number of capture jobs concurrently. This gives you direct control over input, output names, and per-URL results.
- Playwright Test suite: Represent each capture as test work and configure the Test runner’s worker limit. Playwright Test workers are independent OS processes, and each worker starts its own browser. See Playwright’s parallelism guide and test configuration documentation.
The example below uses a standalone queue, which is the more direct fit for an arbitrary list. Its concurrency limit is an example, not a universal recommendation: choose a cap by measuring your own pages, runtime, memory use, and failure rate.

Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in your project using the commands for your package manager. For npm:

node batch-screenshots.mjsEach input gets a stable, zero-padded output filename based on its order in the list. The JSON results file records successes and failures so you can retry failed URLs without repeating successful captures. The script treats any received HTTP status as a completed navigation; if your task considers an HTTP error status a failed capture, add a status check before taking the screenshot.
Change the capture scope
The example uses fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page. For only the visible viewport, remove that option or set fullPage: false. Playwright’s Page API supports navigation and screenshots saved to a path; its screenshot documentation also describes full-page and buffer-based capture options: Page API and screenshots documentation. The latter is the next-version documentation, so check the documentation matching your installed Playwright version when relying on version-specific details.

Set concurrency without overwhelming the workload
More workers can increase throughput, but they also mean more active browser pages and more simultaneous requests to target sites. There is no single correct worker count for every batch. Start with a modest cap, then observe completion time, memory pressure, timeouts, and target-site failures on representative URLs.
In a standalone script, the queue controls concurrency; setting a Playwright Test worker option will not schedule that script’s URL array. In a test suite, use the Test runner’s configuration or command-line worker limit, as documented in worker configuration. Keep parallel jobs independent where possible: use distinct output paths, avoid concurrent mutation of shared accounts or server-side data, and account for sites that throttle simultaneous requests.

Choose browser contexts based on session needs
A browser context is an isolated, non-persistent browser session; pages are tabs within a context. A new context for every URL, as in the example, prevents cookies and local storage from leaking between captures. If the URLs are supposed to share an authenticated session, reuse a context intentionally and open a page for each job instead. Contexts can host multiple pages, but increasing pages in one context does not remove the need to set a concurrency limit. - Keep names collision-free: The example uses input order rather than URL text, avoiding filename problems and collisions. Preserve the input list with the result file to map images back to URLs.
- Match screenshot scope to the task: Viewport screenshots are consistent in dimensions; full-page captures include the longer document and may vary in height.
- Decide how to handle delayed content:
waitUntil: 'load'waits for the page load event, but client-rendered content may appear later. For such pages, wait for a meaningful selector or an explicitly chosen delay before capturing. - Keep visual-test environments stable: Playwright notes that rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep baseline and comparison runs on the same environment where possible, and record browser and package versions. Dynamic content can also change between runs. See screenshot comparison guidance.
Troubleshoot common batch failures
- Invalid URL or unsupported scheme: Supply absolute
httporhttpsURLs. The example validates input before launching the browser; correct the offending line inurls.txt. - Navigation timeout: The page may be slow, blocked, or waiting on resources. Check whether the URL loads in a browser, then adjust the navigation timeout for the workload or choose an appropriate readiness condition. A longer timeout can also keep a worker occupied longer.
- Screenshot missing after an HTTP error: A server can return an HTTP error response while navigation itself completes. The sample records the returned status but still captures the page. If that is not acceptable, treat response statuses outside your expected range as failures.
- Memory use or target-site errors rise with concurrency: Lower
WORKERS. A higher cap can increase resource use and simultaneous traffic; tune against your own pages rather than assuming more workers are always better. - Captures differ between runs: Stabilize the operating system, browser version, settings, and headless mode; wait for dynamic content to reach the state you need. Avoid comparing screenshots produced under different rendering environments.
- One failed URL stops the entire batch: The sample catches errors per URL and continues other jobs. Inspect
screenshots-results.jsonand rerun only entries withstatusset toerror.
