For either method, capture the full page—not just the visible viewport—and keep the browser, operating system, viewport, page state, and capture date consistent. A visual difference can reflect a real website change, but it can also come from different rendering conditions or changing page content.
What a full-page screenshot captures
A full-page screenshot includes content below the current viewport, unlike a visible-area screenshot. That distinction matters when researching game sites: a page may place release details, screenshots, patch notes, or other relevant material farther down the page. Choose visible-only capture when the viewport itself is what you want to compare; choose full-page capture when you need the page as a whole.

A screenshot records visual appearance at a particular time and capture setup. It can help preserve layout, imagery, and canvas or chart content, but it is not the best format for searching text or understanding semantic page structure. For those tasks, use page text or an accessibility snapshot as well as—or instead of—the image.

Take a one-off full-page screenshot in Firefox
- Open the game website page and wait for the content you need to appear. If the page has delayed or interactive content, decide whether to capture that state and record what you did.
- Open Firefox’s screenshot interface by right-clicking an empty area of the page and choosing Take Screenshot, or use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Select Save full page to include content below the fold. Choose Save visible only if you intend to compare the current viewport. Firefox also supports selecting a region or a highlighted page element.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard. Firefox’s suggested download filename includes a timestamp and page title.
- For research records, use a filename or accompanying note that identifies the page and capture date, and record browser, operating system, viewport, and any relevant interaction or consent state.
For more control, Firefox DevTools offers a screenshot toolbar button and a Web Console :screenshot helper. The helper supports a delay, device-pixel ratio, filename, full-page mode, and CSS selector. A delay can be useful when you want to capture an opened menu or hover state. Take care with filenames: capturing again to the same filename overwrites the earlier image. See Mozilla’s DevTools screenshot documentation and Firefox’s screenshot help for the current interface details.

Capture repeatable screenshots with Playwright
Playwright can capture the full scrollable page as if it fit on a very tall screen. In JavaScript, the option is fullPage: true; in Python, it is full_page=True. The examples below assume a Playwright project is already set up and the required browser is installed. They navigate to the target page, wait for the page’s load event, and save a full-page PNG.
JavaScript
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'game-page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Python
import asyncio
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright
async def main():
async with async_playwright() as p:
browser = await p.chromium.launch()
page = await browser.new_page(viewport={"width": 1440, "height": 900})
await page.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="load")
await page.screenshot(path="game-page.png", full_page=True)
await browser.close()
asyncio.run(main())
Replace https://example.com with the page under study. If the site’s important content appears only after interaction or a delay, add the appropriate navigation, wait, or interaction before the screenshot; a successful screenshot does not prove every dynamic element finished loading. Playwright can also return screenshot bytes in a buffer if you need to process or store the image in your own workflow. See Playwright’s screenshots documentation.

Build a useful capture record
For comparisons across pages, dates, or versions, preserve enough context to interpret each image. Playwright does not automatically record every detail below as a research log; record it alongside the screenshot yourself.
Recommended Free Tools
- Page URL and the date and time captured.
- Browser and browser version, operating system, and viewport dimensions.
- Whether the capture was full-page or visible-only, and any relevant device-pixel ratio setting.
- Any interaction, consent state, or deliberate wait that affected what appeared.
- A filename that distinguishes page identity and date instead of overwriting an earlier capture.
Page content can change between visits, so note whether the comparison is intended to detect a site revision, a changing game listing, or a particular page state. A capture-environment change can produce visual differences even when the site itself has not changed.

Compare captures manually or with Playwright Test
Manual review
For exploratory research, place the two images side by side or use an image viewer’s overlay or difference view. Check that the page state, capture mode, and dimensions are comparable before interpreting a difference. This is a practical review workflow, not a feature claim about Firefox or Playwright.
Automated visual comparison
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() can save a reference screenshot on an initial run and compare later runs against it. For the initial baseline, it takes screenshots until two consecutive captures match, then saves the last one. Its comparison supports a configurable pixel-difference threshold. A stylesheet can hide volatile content such as an iframe, but do so only when that content is irrelevant to the research question; otherwise, filtering may conceal a genuine change.

- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
Update a reference image only after verifying that the difference is an intended change. Automatically accepting every new image can turn an unexplained change into the new baseline. Playwright cautions that rendering can vary with host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode, and recommends using the same environment for the baseline and later comparisons. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance.
Choose the right evidence for the question
- Need a single record quickly? Firefox’s built-in capture interface is convenient for an individual page.
- Need captures you can repeat across many pages or dates? Use a Playwright script and keep its environment and capture settings stable.
- Need to inspect appearance? Use screenshots for layout, images, and canvas or chart content.
- Need searchable text or page structure? Use page text or an accessibility snapshot. Playwright’s screenshot guidance for MCP tools discusses screenshots alongside accessibility snapshots: Playwright screenshot tools.
For visual comparisons, consistency usually matters more than maximizing resolution. Firefox’s DevTools helper can set device-pixel ratio, and Playwright’s CLI documents a high-resolution option, but changes in browser or platform can also change rendering. Match the baseline setup before increasing resolution.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request can return an image or PDF; its consent-banner, popup, and chat-widget cleanup can be turned off when you need to preserve those elements. For game research, be deliberate about whether removing a consent banner or widget is appropriate: if that UI is the subject of the capture, disable the relevant cleanup rather than treating the cleaned image as the original page state.
The API call below saves a WebP screenshot. Create an API key first, replace YOUR_API_KEY, and replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Troubleshooting capture and comparison problems
- The screenshot stops at the visible viewport: Choose Firefox’s Save full page, or set Playwright’s
fullPage: trueorfull_page=True. - Dynamic content is missing or captured in the wrong state: Wait for the relevant content or perform the needed interaction before capture. Firefox’s DevTools helper supports a delay; in Playwright, add a wait or interaction suited to the page rather than assuming the initial load event covers all dynamic content.
- A Firefox capture overwrote an earlier one: The DevTools screenshot helper overwrites an existing image when the same filename is used. Choose a distinct filename for each capture.
- Two captures differ unexpectedly: Compare browser, version, operating system, viewport, device-pixel ratio, headless mode, page state, and capture time. Re-capture in a matched environment before concluding the game site changed.
- Automated comparisons keep flagging incidental changes: Investigate the changed region first. If a volatile element is irrelevant to the question, a stylesheet can hide it; do not suppress content that could itself be evidence.
- You need text rather than appearance: A screenshot is an image, not a searchable or semantic page representation. Use page text or an accessibility snapshot for reading and structure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot include content below the fold?
Yes. It captures the full scrollable page rather than only the currently visible viewport.
Can I use screenshots alone to establish that a game website changed?
Not reliably without checking capture conditions and page state. A difference may come from rendering conditions or changing content as well as a site revision.
