Australian navigation-technology company Advanced Navigation plans to establish its U.S. headquarters and a research, development, and manufacturing center in Huntsville, Alabama. The proposed site is intended to produce navigation systems that can work when GPS is jammed, spoofed, unreliable, or unavailable; it is an industrial expansion, not a consumer robotics launch.
What Advanced Navigation plans to make in Huntsville
Advanced Navigation America, the company’s U.S. arm, describes the planned facility as a Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) Center of Excellence. The October 6, 2026 announcement says it will research, develop, and manufacture technologies intended to counter electromagnetic warfare, spanning fiber optics, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), laser sensing, photonics, vision-based systems, artificial intelligence, and quantum sensing. Advanced Navigation’s announcement presents the site as a U.S. production node for defense requirements; Axios Huntsville reports it will make inertial navigation and tracking products.

How the navigation technology works
Inertial navigation estimates movement from a known starting point using onboard sensors, rather than relying on continuous GPS signals. The company says precision fiber-optic gyroscope sensors and laser velocity sensors can help systems determine position and motion when GPS is jammed, spoofed, or unavailable. Axios notes that this approach can be useful in settings such as underwater or underground, where GPS reception is not available.

How many jobs could the facility bring, and when might it open?
Axios reported that the Huntsville workforce could grow from fewer than 30 people to as many as 100, across engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing. That is a potential headcount, not a confirmed hiring commitment. The company expects the facility to be up and running around March or April; Axios describes the opening window as spring 2027. Both are forward-looking estimates reported in October 2026, not confirmation that the facility is operating.
Will Huntsville replace the company’s Australian operations?
No. Advanced Navigation says the U.S. site will operate alongside its existing operations in Australia and the United Kingdom. The company characterizes Huntsville as added production capacity and supply-chain redundancy for U.S. defense needs, rather than a move away from Australia.

Axios, citing Advanced Navigation America president Mike Cohen, reported that initial Huntsville production could equal about 25–30% of Australian output, with the possibility of eventually matching it. Those figures describe company-representative projections; the announcement does not establish realized output or a timeline for reaching that level.

What the expansion says about the company’s U.S. presence
Advanced Navigation says it has deployed more than 100,000 systems globally and names Anduril, Kongsberg, Rheinmetall, BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Lockheed Martin among its aerospace, defense, and technology customers. Those are company-reported figures and relationships. It also says it works directly with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army on future PNT requirements through programs including the All-Domain Persistent Experiment (APEX).

The announcement associates the company’s broader investment activity with a $110 million Series C funding round, but does not state how much, if any, is allocated specifically to Huntsville. It also cites a $53.6 billion request for autonomous systems in the FY2027 President’s Budget; that figure is presented in the company announcement and is not independently established here.

The company’s announcement places the facility in Huntsville’s aerospace and defense ecosystem. Axios quoted Cohen pointing to capabilities at Cummings Research Park and the concentration of aviation and space activity in the region. The site’s planned combination of engineering and manufacturing aligns with the company’s stated emphasis on keeping the two functions closely connected: U.S. operations vice president Chuck Matheny said, “With technology this precise, you can’t separate engineering from manufacturing.”
