With a remote browser, the screenshot bytes can be returned to your test process, but a file path is local to the process that writes it—not automatically to your test runner. For a single screenshot, the simplest route is usually to fetch the PNG bytes through WebDriver and save them on the client.
Save a remote Selenium screenshot to the test runner
This Python example connects to a remote WebDriver endpoint, takes the current-window screenshot as PNG bytes, and writes it into the test process’s artifact directory. Replace the endpoint and target URL with values for your deployment.

options = Options()
options.add_argument("--headless")
driver = webdriver.Remote(

options=options,
)
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
png = driver.get_screenshot_as_png()
output = Path("artifacts/page.png")
output.parent.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
output.write_bytes(png)
finally:
driver.quit()
The example uses documented Selenium interfaces and Chrome’s --headless option; it is not a claim that the code was executed against a particular cluster. Install Selenium in the test environment, make the Grid endpoint reachable from it, and ensure the test runner can write to artifacts/. Selenium’s Python API reference is for version 4.50.0: Selenium Chromium WebDriver API. Chrome’s headless guidance is at Chrome Headless mode.

Save directly to a file when the browser is local
If the test and ChromeDriver run in the same container, you can use driver.save_screenshot('/absolute/path/page.png') or driver.get_screenshot_as_file('/absolute/path/page.png'). Use an absolute path, a .png filename, and an existing writable directory. Check the method’s boolean return value: False indicates an I/O failure. This writes in the filesystem visible to the process handling the WebDriver call.

Choose where the screenshot should live
First identify the topology: Chrome may run in the test container, in a sidecar in the same Pod, or in a separate Grid-created browser Pod. That determines whether a path is shared and how long the image will remain available.
| Method | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Return bytes through WebDriver | Individual screenshots that should land in the test runner or be uploaded as CI artifacts. | The test process must receive and write or upload the returned image. |
Shared emptyDir volume |
Temporary transfer between cooperating containers in the same Pod. | Shared only within that Pod; data is removed when the Pod is removed from its node. |
| Persistent volume or object storage | Artifacts that must outlive a Pod or be available to later jobs. | Requires a storage and retention choice appropriate to the cluster; no particular provider is required. |
| Selenium Grid session assets | Deployments configured to store session assets through Grid’s Kubernetes mode. | Availability and retrieval behavior depend on the Grid version and deployment configuration; do not assume screenshots are automatically exported. |
Kubernetes documents that emptyDir is shared by containers in one Pod, survives an individual container crash, and is deleted when the Pod is removed from its node. See Kubernetes volumes. The same documentation warns that hostPath volumes carry security risks, so avoid using one as a casual file-sharing workaround.

Check Grid asset configuration
Selenium Grid’s CLI reference documents --kubernetes-assets-path, an absolute path where session assets are stored in Kubernetes mode. Verify the exact Grid version, how that deployment exposes asset retrieval, and whether the setting applies to your sessions before relying on it. See Selenium Grid CLI options.

Capture the intended page state
Take the screenshot only after the content relevant to the test is ready. For dynamic pages, wait for a specific element or application state rather than assuming navigation alone means rendering is complete. Choose a wait condition that matches the page; there is no universal wait that guarantees every site’s content is ready.
get_screenshot_as_png() and the related current-window screenshot methods capture the current window, not necessarily the entire height of a long document. Do not describe that result as a full-page screenshot unless your implementation explicitly captures the full document.
Capture one element instead of the window
For a chart, table, or component, Selenium’s element screenshot API can avoid capturing unrelated content:
Rank #4
element = driver.find_element("css selector", "#results-chart")
element.screenshot("artifacts/chart.png")
The selector and destination should match your page and test environment. Selenium’s screenshot documentation describes both current-window and element screenshot operations: Take a screenshot.
Why can’t I find the screenshot file?
In a remote session, the machine running the test client and the container handling the browser are distinct operational contexts. A path written inside a browser or Grid container does not, by itself, create a file on the client. Use returned bytes, an explicitly shared mount, or a configured Grid asset mechanism.
- Test runner cannot find the path: determine which process wrote it and in which container. Prefer saving returned bytes in the client process if the artifact belongs in CI output.
- Screenshot write returns false: use an absolute path ending in
.png, create the parent directory, check write permissions, and inspect the method’s return value. - Artifact disappears: if it is on
emptyDir, it is temporary and is deleted when the Pod is removed from its node. Upload or copy it before cleanup. - Chrome will not start: confirm headless configuration and compatibility between the deployed Chrome and ChromeDriver versions. ChromeDriver is a separate executable used to control Chrome; Selenium documents local and RemoteWebDriver setup in its ChromeDriver getting started guide.
- Screenshot is blank or stale: wait for the page condition your test needs before capture, such as a particular element or network-dependent content, and confirm the session is on the expected page.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a URL rather than a Selenium-driven browser session, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://example.com
-o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Does Selenium’s current-window screenshot capture a whole long page?
No. The current-window API captures the window; use an implementation specifically designed for full-document capture if you need the full page.
Can a Selenium screenshot be returned without saving a remote file?
Yes. Selenium can return screenshot image data as PNG bytes or base64, which the test process can save or upload.
