Chrome needs a font containing each character’s glyph; if its CSS font choices and system fallback fonts cannot supply one, it renders a missing-glyph box. This is usually a font-availability problem, not a screenshot encoding problem.
Why Chrome renders emojis as boxes
Chrome shapes page text using the requested CSS fonts and fallback fonts. Chromium’s Blink text-stack documentation explains that font selection tries the primary font, then secondary fonts and system fallback until no “.notdef” glyphs remain—the boxes used when no glyph is found. A page can therefore contain the correct Unicode characters while Chrome cannot find a usable font glyph to display them.

A screenshot records the rendered pixels; Selenium does not supply or draw emoji glyphs. Check the environment that launched Chrome: a CI worker, container, remote Selenium node, or local computer may have a different font inventory from your development workstation. The relevant font package and installation steps depend on the operating system and distribution.

Diagnose the missing emoji glyph

Confirm the characters are in the page
Inspect the affected text in the DOM and record the exact emoji sequence. If the intended Unicode characters are present but the screenshot shows boxes, prioritize font coverage and fallback rather than changing screenshot encoding.

Check fonts where Chrome actually runs
Identify the operating system and distribution of the Selenium host, container, or remote node. Check whether an emoji-capable font that covers the exact characters is installed and discoverable by that runtime. Do not assume a font installed on your workstation is also present in a container or CI image.

Check custom web-font loading and coverage
If the page uses a web font, verify that its request succeeds and that the font includes the emoji glyphs. Chromium uses web fonts during CSS font resolution and can fall back to system fonts when the requested fonts do not cover the text run. A custom font that loads successfully may still lack the needed glyphs.

Restart Chrome and repeat the capture
After changing the runtime’s fonts, restart the Chrome process so the new browser session uses the updated environment. Capture the same page and emoji string again to see whether the rendering changes.

Compare headless and headful on the same host
If boxes remain, compare a headless and a headful session on the same machine. Modern Chrome Headless shares browser code with headful Chrome, so a difference is a reason to investigate configuration and environment details—not proof that headless uses a separate rendering engine. Chrome 112 changed Headless to create platform windows without displaying them; that does not make font inventories identical across different hosts.

Verify the browser and driver separately
Confirm which Chrome binary Selenium launched and check that Chrome and ChromeDriver match by major version. ChromeDriver accepts ChromeOptions for arguments and binary selection. These checks can uncover setup mismatches, but the official documentation does not identify a WebDriver option or driver upgrade that supplies absent emoji glyphs.

Common misdiagnoses and limits
- “It must be headless.” Modern Headless shares browser code with headful Chrome. Different machines can still have different fonts, so compare sessions on the same host before drawing conclusions.
- “Upgrade ChromeDriver to add emoji support.” Matching Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions is a sound setup check, but it does not install fonts or establish glyph coverage.
- “Change the screenshot encoding.” If the page DOM contains the intended characters but Chrome paints boxes, investigate text shaping and font fallback first.
- “Install this one Linux package everywhere.” The correct package and command depend on the distribution and runtime. Identify those details before selecting an installation method.
