A browser’s screenshot feature captures what is displayed; it does not necessarily remove ads by itself. If you need the original page layout intact while removing ads, there is no universal one-click method established by the browser guidance here, so check the saved image before using it.
First choose what “without ads” means
There are two different goals: removing ads and surrounding clutter by switching to a simplified reading layout, or preserving the original page design while excluding advertisements. Reader modes can help with the first goal on supported pages, but they change the rendering. A screenshot tool determines whether you capture the visible viewport, a full page, or one element; capture alone is not documented as an ad remover.

- Choose a clean reading view for an article where readability matters more than matching the original design.
- Capture the original layout only if the ads are already absent or you can remove them through a method you trust. Verify the resulting image; the documented browser controls below do not promise automatic ad stripping.
- Choose the output: a screenshot is an image, while printing or saving to PDF creates a document. They are not interchangeable.
Firefox: simplify the page, then capture it
Try Reader View or Simplified printing
- Open the webpage in Firefox. If the Reader View icon appears in the address bar, select it to open the simplified reading rendering. Reader View is available only for pages Firefox can simplify.
- If you want to check the print route instead, open the browser menu and choose Print.
- In the print dialog, open More settings and look for Format settings → Simplified. Mozilla says this format strips clutter such as ads. The option may be absent if the page cannot be simplified or Reader View is already active.
- Return to the cleaned page view if you need an image rather than a PDF, then capture it using one of the screenshot options below.
Mozilla’s Firefox simplified-print guidance describes the clean print option. The print workflow itself produces print output, not an image screenshot.

Firefox’s screenshot interface distinguishes Save visible (the current viewport) from Save full page (the page beyond the fold). Firefox Developer Tools also support screenshots of a full page or an individual element. These are capture options, not ad-removal options: use them after switching to a clean view if that is the result you want. Microsoft Edge: use Immersive Reader for clean print output
- Open the page in Edge and look for the Immersive Reader icon in the address bar. On Windows, Microsoft also documents F9 as a way to enter it when supported.
- Open Print and inspect the preview to see whether the simplified rendering is suitable.
- Print or save the clean output as a PDF if that meets your need. The Microsoft guidance cited here documents a clutter-free printing workaround, not a full-page screenshot procedure.
Microsoft cautions that “Immersive Reader may not be available for all websites.” Check the page and preview before relying on it. See Microsoft’s Edge printing instructions.
Chrome Headless: automate a screenshot or PDF
For a repeatable developer workflow, Chrome Headless can capture a screenshot or print a PDF. These commands capture page output; Chrome’s documented flags do not claim to remove ads. Set the viewport and timing to suit the page, then inspect the result for ads and incomplete loading.

Save an image
chrome --headless --screenshot=page.png --window-size=1440,1000 --timeout=5000 https://example.com--screenshot saves an image, --window-size sets the viewport, and --timeout controls how long Chrome waits before capture. The command captures a viewport-sized image; do not assume it includes the entire page. Adjust the viewport or use a suitable browser automation workflow when you need content below the fold.

Save a PDF instead
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=page.pdf --no-pdf-header-footer https://example.com--print-to-pdf creates a PDF rather than an image, and --no-pdf-header-footer suppresses browser-added headers and footers. The Chrome Headless command-line reference documents these flags; it was last updated 2024-10-21 UTC.

Optional extension for a clean PDF or screenshot
PrintFriendly’s Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons listings advertise ad or clutter removal, PDF conversion, and full-page screenshot features. Those are vendor/store listing claims, not independent compatibility tests; confirm that the extension works for your browser and page before depending on it. Troubleshooting
- No Reader View icon or Simplified choice: Firefox may not be able to simplify that page, or Reader View may already be active. Try another supported article page, or capture the original view and inspect it.
- Immersive Reader is missing in Edge: the site may not support it. Microsoft notes it is not available for every website; use another method rather than assuming the print preview will be clutter-free.
- The screenshot still contains ads: the screenshot command captures the rendered page, not an ad-free version. Activate a supported simplified view first, or use a method that removes the specific elements and verify the saved file.
- The image stops at the fold: the selected capture may be viewport-only. In Firefox choose Save full page when you need the whole document; check the output dimensions. Chrome’s documented screenshot command includes viewport sizing, so a viewport capture should not be mistaken for a full-page image.
- The capture has missing content: dynamic pages may not have finished loading at capture time. In Chrome Headless, adjust
--timeoutand capture again; confirm the page has loaded the content you need. - You got a PDF instead of an image: print workflows and
--print-to-pdfcreate document output. Use Firefox screenshot controls or Chrome’s--screenshotwhen an image file is required.
