If a YouTube radio stream’s source is stable but playback keeps buffering, troubleshoot the listener’s connection, selected video quality, competing network activity, and playback device one at a time. A stable broadcast feed does not guarantee a stable path from YouTube to your player, and no single check is guaranteed to fix every case.
Start with a controlled playback check
Replay the same radio stream and note the device, whether you are using the YouTube app or a browser, and the selected playback quality. Keep those details in view as you test; changing one condition at a time makes the result more useful than changing several settings together.

- Does buffering happen on this stream only, or on other YouTube videos too?
- Does it happen on one device or across devices?
- Does it happen on one connection, such as home Wi-Fi, or also on another available network?
These comparisons can narrow down which part of playback is involved, but they do not identify a specific failing component by themselves.

In the YouTube player, open Settings and choose Quality, then select a lower resolution than the one currently playing. If the radio stream becomes steady, keep the lower setting as a practical workaround while checking whether network capacity, shared use, or the device or browser is limiting the higher quality. YouTube says quality can depend on connection speed, player size, the quality of the original upload, and browser support; you can choose it manually. YouTube’s video-quality guidance explains the available quality controls.

Compare your speed with YouTube’s guidance
YouTube gives these approximate sustained-speed recommendations for video playback. They are guidance figures, not guarantees against buffering:

These recommendations are more useful for judging a chosen resolution than broad minimum-connection figures. A speed result below the recommendation may make that quality difficult to sustain; a result above it does not rule out other causes. Compare the connection and reduce network competition
Test another available network
Replay the same stream on another connection, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, if available. Mobile data rates may apply. If the symptom changes between connections, investigate the affected connection path; the comparison alone cannot show whether the cause is the router, internet provider, or route to YouTube. YouTube recommends trying a different internet connection when videos buffer or fail to load. YouTube’s streaming and video troubleshooting page covers this check.

Pause competing activity
Close unnecessary browser tabs and programs, and where practical pause heavy network use on other devices. Then replay the stream at the same quality and compare. YouTube cautions that multiple devices on one network may reduce the speed available to a device.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, if practical
If the playback device has an Ethernet connection, temporarily connect it by cable and compare playback with Wi-Fi under otherwise similar conditions. This is an optional diagnostic check, not a guaranteed fix; a wired connection may help distinguish a Wi-Fi-related issue, but buffering can have other causes. YouTube says it may help to hardwire a connection rather than use wireless. Its system requirements and supported-devices page also lists broad connection guidance, including a 500+ Kbps general minimum and 1+ Mbps for its listed premium movie, TV, and live-stream use case; these figures are not substitutes for the resolution-specific recommendations above.
Check the browser, app, and device
Test browser extensions
If the issue follows one browser, try YouTube in an Incognito window with extensions disabled. An extension, including an ad blocker, may affect playback. If the stream works there, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify whether one changes the result; do not assume the extension is the cause until the comparison supports it.

Update and restart
Update the browser or YouTube app, then restart the browser or app and the device. If possible, try a supported alternate device. If the same stream works on the alternate device using the same connection, that points toward the original playback environment rather than proving a specific device fault.

Clear the YouTube app cache where available
On supported mobile setups, clear the YouTube app cache if the device provides that option, then reopen the app and replay the stream. Menu names and cache controls vary by device, so use the device’s own app settings rather than assuming every phone offers the same path. YouTube’s troubleshooting advice includes checking extensions, updating, restarting, and clearing the app cache where supported. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps and its video-error guidance.

When to contact support
If several streaming services or other device functions also have problems, YouTube recommends consulting the device manufacturer’s support resources. If the issue appears limited to YouTube, send playback feedback through the app’s Help and feedback flow. Include the stream, device, app or browser, selected quality, connection comparisons, and steps already tried so the report describes what you observed rather than guessing at a cause. YouTube does not provide a dedicated diagnosis here for radio streams as a separate format, and its general guidance cannot determine the cause for an individual listener.
