These adjustments reduce the requested image’s scale or scope, but Mozilla does not document them as guaranteed fixes, and there is no universal page-height or memory limit that applies to every browser and device.
Take a full-page screenshot in Firefox
Firefox documents two built-in routes: a Developer Tools button for a point-and-click capture, and a Web Console helper for a command-driven capture. Use the button for a straightforward whole-page image; use the command when you want to set a filename, delay, scale, or target element.

Use the Developer Tools screenshot button
- Open Firefox Developer Tools and open its Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Click the screenshot button in the Developer Tools toolbar. Firefox saves the resulting file to Downloads.
Use the Web Console
- Open the Web Console for the page you want to capture.
- Enter
:screenshot capture.png --fullpageand run the command. The filename is optional; Firefox includes portions of the page outside the visible window.
The helper also documents options for device-pixel ratio (--dpr), delay (--delay), and a CSS-selected element and its descendants (--selector), as well as clipboard and file options. Check Firefox’s command help or its screenshot documentation for the exact option syntax available in your version.
Reduce the size or scope of a failing capture
A full-page screenshot has to represent the page’s full height, and a larger device-pixel ratio requests more image pixels. If the capture fails on an unusually long page, try a lower --dpr value to reduce scale, or use --selector to capture only the relevant element and its descendants. These are practical adjustments based on what the documented controls change—not guaranteed remedies for memory errors.

- Choose a lower scale when you need the whole page but can accept less image detail.
- Capture a selected element when only one section matters; this reduces scope rather than capturing the entire page.
- Use a delay when the page needs time to settle before capture. A delay can help with timing, but it does not reduce image dimensions.
There is no documented universal maximum page height, memory threshold, or setting that will make every long-page capture succeed. Chrome for Developers likewise notes that “There are no hard numbers here, because different devices and browsers have different capabilities.”
Find out whether browser memory is the problem
A failed screenshot alone does not establish that screenshot generation caused the memory pressure. A page may use substantial memory before capture begins, so inspect the affected browser and page rather than assuming the capture is the cause.

Check a point-in-time reading in Chrome Task Manager
- Open Chrome Task Manager with Shift+Esc, or choose More tools > Task manager.
- Right-click a table header and enable the JavaScript memory column.
- Compare Memory footprint, which reflects operating-system memory, with JavaScript Memory, which reflects the JavaScript heap and shows a live value in parentheses.
Task Manager is a snapshot of resource use. It can help identify a page using substantial memory, but it does not establish a universal screenshot limit.

- In Chrome DevTools, open Performance, enable Memory, and record the activity around the operation you are investigating. A recording shows memory over time.
- In the Memory panel, take heap snapshots before and after an operation and compare them to investigate retained JavaScript objects. Taking a snapshot begins with garbage collection; the snapshot shows reachable JavaScript objects.
A high reading or a changing heap is evidence about page or browser memory use, not proof that the screenshot itself is responsible. Reproduce the failure on the affected device and browser and consider the specific error alongside the memory readings.

Troubleshoot common full-page capture failures
