If Selenium screenshots show only what is currently visible, use a browser-specific full-document capture method: Firefox has dedicated full-page screenshot methods, while Chrome can request capture beyond the viewport through the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP). Selenium’s generic screenshot methods capture the current window, not necessarily the whole scrollable document.
First, check what you need to capture
“Screenshot” can mean three different things: the visible browser area, one element, or the entire scrollable document. Selenium documents its generic WebDriver screenshot methods as current-window screenshots. Use a full-document method when you need the whole page; use an element screenshot when you only need a component.
- Confirm which browser and driver your test actually runs, and whether the session is local or remote.
- Choose a method that matches that browser and session. Firefox provides Selenium full-page methods; the Chrome method below depends on CDP support in the deployed browser and driver combination.
- Make sure the content you need has rendered before capturing. A full-page capture does not necessarily cause lazy-loaded content to load.
Firefox: use Selenium’s full-page screenshot API
Selenium’s Firefox WebDriver provides methods for saving a screenshot of the full document. This example uses get_full_page_screenshot_as_file():
from selenium import webdriver
with webdriver.Firefox() as driver:
driver.get("https://example.com")
saved = driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file("page.png")
if not saved:
raise OSError("Could not save the full-page screenshot")
The method returns a boolean. Check it if your script needs to handle a file-write failure; Selenium’s API documentation recommends providing a full path if needed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Other Firefox full-page methods
The Firefox API also documents save_full_page_screenshot(filename), plus full-page PNG and base64 methods. Choose the return format that fits your workflow; the example above writes a PNG file directly.
Chrome: capture beyond the viewport with CDP
Chrome’s DevTools Protocol command Page.captureScreenshot accepts captureBeyondViewport. Its documented default is false, so set it to true to request capture beyond the viewport. Selenium’s Python remote WebDriver exposes execute_cdp_cmd() for sending this command.

import base64
from selenium import webdriver
with webdriver.Chrome() as driver:
driver.get("https://example.com")
result = driver.execute_cdp_cmd(
"Page.captureScreenshot",
{"format": "png", "captureBeyondViewport": True},
)
with open("page.png", "wb") as image_file:
image_file.write(base64.b64decode(result["data"]))
The command returns image data in a base64-encoded data field; decoding it produces the PNG bytes written by this example.
Chrome compatibility caveat
This is a Chrome DevTools Protocol technique, not a portable WebDriver full-page API. CDP’s tip-of-tree protocol documentation warns that the protocol changes frequently and does not guarantee backwards compatibility. Verify that the command is available with the Chrome, driver, Selenium, and remote-session setup you actually deploy, then inspect the resulting image dimensions and content.

Choose the capture method by scope and browser
| What you need | Method | Scope and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Visible browser area | driver.save_screenshot(...) or get_screenshot_as_file(...) |
Documented as a current-window screenshot; do not assume it captures the full scrollable page. |
| Full document in Firefox | driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file(...) |
Firefox-specific Selenium API documented for full-document capture. |
| Beyond-viewport capture in Chrome | execute_cdp_cmd("Page.captureScreenshot", {"captureBeyondViewport": True, ...}) |
CDP-specific; check compatibility with the browser and driver versions in use. |
| One component | WebElement screenshot API | Use when the target is an element rather than the full document. |
If the screenshot still looks incomplete
Separate capture scope from page readiness. The full-page methods request a larger capture area, but that does not guarantee every desired page element has loaded.
- Confirm you used the full-document Firefox API or enabled
captureBeyondViewportfor Chrome, rather than a generic current-window screenshot. - Wait until the page content you need has rendered before taking the screenshot.
- Check whether content appears only after scrolling. Do not assume full-document capture itself triggers lazy loading.
- Inspect the output’s dimensions and image contents. If the result is still wrong, verify browser, driver, Selenium, and remote-session compatibility.
Common problems and fixes
- Only the visible area appears: The script may be using a generic screenshot method. Switch to Firefox’s full-page method or Chrome’s CDP capture option.
- Chrome reports an unavailable or unsupported command: The CDP command may not be exposed by the deployed browser or driver combination. Check the versions and session configuration; this approach is browser- and protocol-specific.
- The Firefox file was not saved: Check the boolean returned by
get_full_page_screenshot_as_file(), verify the destination is writable, and try an absolute file path. - Parts of the page are blank or missing: Confirm those elements have rendered before capture. Content that loads only after scrolling may need separate handling; the API behavior alone does not establish a universal lazy-loading solution.
- The result is the wrong size: Compare the output dimensions and contents against the intended capture scope, then confirm that the method matches the browser and local or remote execution setup.
