You can quiet routine notifications without switching off your phone: set up Do Not Disturb or a Focus, then allow calls from the people you trust. iPhone and Android offer different controls, including different repeat-caller windows, so check the settings on your device before you start your break.
How do I silence notifications but allow calls?
Use your phone’s built-in Focus or Do Not Disturb controls. They let you reduce interruptions while keeping selected calls available. First decide who should be able to reach you, and whether you want a repeat call from someone else to get through.

On iPhone: allow calls through a Focus
- Open Settings > Focus.
- Choose an existing Focus, such as Do Not Disturb, or select a Focus you use for your break.
- Tap People and choose who is allowed to notify you. Configure calls from the people or groups you want to allow.
- Review the repeat-call setting before turning on the Focus. Apple documents an option to allow two or more calls from the same person within three minutes.
- Turn on the Focus when you are ready for your break. Labels and options can vary by iOS version.
Apple’s iPhone Focus guidance describes allowing notifications from selected people and configuring calls from certain groups.

On Android: set up Do Not Disturb or a Mode
- Open your phone’s Settings and find Do Not Disturb or Modes. The location and labels vary by phone.
- Choose which people, apps, and other interruptions are allowed while the mode is active.
- Review the repeat-caller option. Google describes allowing a call through when the same person calls twice within 15 minutes.
- Turn on the mode when you begin your break. If the menu names differ, follow your phone manufacturer’s instructions.

How can I let certain people call through Do Not Disturb?
Choose trusted people in the allowed-people or calls settings before enabling the break mode. On iPhone, Focus lets you select people and configure calls from certain groups. On Android, Do Not Disturb or a Mode lets you choose which people can interrupt you. The available choices and labels depend on the platform and, on Android, may also depend on the phone.
Use the narrowest allowance that fits your needs: selected people if only specific contacts should reach you, or a broader call allowance if you need more people to be able to call. Check what your phone’s setting actually permits rather than assuming that allowing calls also allows every app-based call.

What to check before starting your phone break
- Confirm that the intended Focus or Do Not Disturb mode is active.
- Check that the right people or groups are allowed to call.
- Decide whether repeat callers should be able to interrupt you.
- If you need calls from a particular service, verify its behavior separately. The platform guidance does not establish that every third-party voice or video calling app follows these controls.
- On Android, consult the phone manufacturer’s instructions if your menus or options differ from Google’s description.
