You can sync an Obsidian vault through Google Drive, but the setup differs by device: use Google Drive for desktop to keep a local vault on Windows or macOS, and a separate folder-sync tool to copy an Android vault to Drive. Google Drive is a third-party method, not Obsidian’s first-party sync service, and simply opening Drive on a phone does not create a continuously synced local vault.
Why Google Drive is trickier than it sounds
An Obsidian vault is a folder of files stored on your device. That makes a file-storage service such as Google Drive a possible route, but the Drive app alone does not ensure the same locally available vault is kept in sync across devices. Obsidian’s Google Drive guidance covers Windows, macOS and Android; it notes limited functionality on iOS. Obsidian’s Google Drive instructions

The desktop setup relies on Google Drive for desktop syncing a local folder. Android needs an additional third-party tool to synchronize the device’s vault folder with Drive. The exact screens and options in such apps can change, so the steps below explain the workflow rather than prescribe unverified app-specific instructions.
Set up the vault on Windows or macOS
- Install and sign in to Google Drive for desktop. Confirm Drive for desktop is syncing your account.
- Choose how Drive stores My Drive files. If you want the vault available offline, use mirroring. Google says mirrored files stay on both the computer and in the cloud and are always available offline. Mirroring uses local disk space. Google Drive: Stream and mirror files
- Put the vault in the local Google Drive folder structure. Work with the actual folder on the computer, not just a cloud-only view.
- Open that folder in Obsidian. In Obsidian, choose the option to open an existing vault and select the local folder you placed in Drive.
- Let Drive finish syncing before switching devices. Check that changes have uploaded before opening or editing the same vault elsewhere.
Mirroring versus streaming
| Drive mode | Local and offline availability | Disk use | Connectivity dependence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mirroring | Files remain on the computer and in Drive; Google says they are always available offline. | Uses local disk space. | Less dependent on an internet connection for access to the mirrored files. |
| Streaming | Files are primarily stored in Drive and accessed from a virtual drive location. | Does not keep the same complete local copy by default. | Google says reliable internet is needed for most users. |
For a vault you expect to open without internet access, mirroring is the clearer fit. Streaming is more cloud-centered; do not assume a streamed vault is fully stored locally.

Set up the vault on Android
- Create or open the vault in Obsidian’s device storage. Obsidian recommends device storage for compatibility with third-party sync tools. It also says the vault data persists if Obsidian is uninstalled. Obsidian: Manage vaults on Android
- Choose a third-party sync tool that can synchronize folders with Google Drive. Configure it to sync the local folder containing the vault with a Drive folder. Obsidian’s guidance calls for a third-party tool on Android; the Drive app by itself is not this folder-sync step. Obsidian’s Google Drive instructions
- Allow the tool to complete the initial sync. Only then open the corresponding vault on another device. Wait for uploads and downloads to finish before editing the same files elsewhere.
There is no app-specific tap-by-tap sequence here: the exact setup depends on the third-party tool and its current interface. Check that tool’s current documentation for folder selection, permissions and sync direction before enabling it.
Prevent conflicts and protect the vault
Obsidian warns that conflicts can occur when the same file is changed on multiple devices before syncing finishes, and that working offline makes conflicts more likely. That is a general conflict warning—not a claim that Google Drive or any Android sync app resolves conflicts in the same way as Obsidian Sync. Obsidian: Resolve file conflicts

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Use one active sync system for the live vault. Obsidian warns that overlapping sync services can cause conflicts or corruption. Obsidian: Sync your notes across devices
- Before moving to another device, wait for the current device’s sync to complete.
- Avoid editing the same note on two devices at once, particularly when either device is offline.
- Keep a separate backup plan. Syncing copies changes between locations; it is not a substitute for a backup you can restore if files are deleted or damaged.
When Obsidian Sync may be simpler
Obsidian documents its own Sync service as the straightforward first-party option across desktop and mobile. Google Drive remains a third-party, folder-based workflow: it needs Drive for desktop on Windows or macOS and a separate folder-sync tool on Android. Choose based on whether you prefer Drive-based file storage or Obsidian’s integrated sync approach. Obsidian: Sync your notes across devices
