You can sync an iPod without iTunes on a Mac running macOS Catalina or later using Finder; on Windows, use Apple Devices with the Apple Music app installed. The right steps—and whether you can add music without replacing what is already on the iPod—depend on your computer, iPod generation, and music source.
Choose the method for your computer

Check your macOS version in the Apple menu under About This Mac. For Windows, install Apple Devices and Apple Music from Apple or the Microsoft Store. Use a cable that fits both the iPod and computer; connector type varies by iPod generation and computer.

Sync music on Windows without using iTunes

Connect the iPod using a compatible USB or USB-C cable. Apple’s guide also allows Wi-Fi syncing after it has been configured. If the iPod does not appear, verify the cable, ports, and model compatibility before trying another method.

Open Apple Devices and select the iPod in the sidebar. Choose Music, then turn on “Sync music onto [device name].”

Choose to sync the entire music library or select artists, albums, genres, or playlists, then apply the change.

When syncing finishes, eject the iPod in Apple Devices before disconnecting it.

Apple Music subscription songs are different from local music
This manual process is for music in your computer’s library, not a way to copy the Apple Music subscription catalog onto any iPod. Apple says subscription songs transfer automatically through Sync Library and cannot be synced using this manual device-sync method while Sync Library is on. Apple’s Windows guide. Do not assume a streaming subscription gives you transferable local audio files.

Sync music on a modern Mac with Finder
On macOS Catalina or later, connect the iPod and open a Finder window. Select the iPod in the Finder sidebar, open the Music tab, choose whether to sync all music or selected items, and apply the changes. Eject the iPod from Finder before unplugging it. Apple identifies Finder as the sync method for Catalina and later; on Mojave or earlier, use iTunes instead. Apple’s computer-sync overview.
Before accepting a “Remove and Sync” prompt
Pause if your computer says “Remove and Sync.” Apple’s iTunes guidance explains that an iPod can sync with only one iTunes library at a time; choosing “Remove and Sync” erases the selected content on the device and replaces it with content from the current computer. Apple’s iTunes sync guidance. If the iPod contains music you need, do not accept the prompt until you understand what will be replaced and have a safe copy of the files.
Automatic syncing can also remove device music when the corresponding item is deleted from the Windows computer: Apple warns that such items are removed from the iPod at the next sync. Keep the source library intact if you rely on automatic syncing. Apple’s Windows guide.
Third-party tools and firmware alternatives
iMazing for some iPod classic models
A representative of iMazing’s maker described a drag-and-drop transfer feature in version 3.6 for iPod classic, claiming it writes the native iTunesDB and supports MP3, AAC, ALAC, WAV, and AIFF. The same post says FLAC and Rockbox-formatted iPods are not supported, and lists macOS and Windows availability. These are vendor claims in a community post, not independent verification. iOpenPod is an experimental option
The iOpenPod author describes an app for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with reported support for iPod classic, mini, and several nano generations. The author says nano 6 and 7 support requires community testing and characterizes the project as early beta. Treat it as an experimental option for technically comfortable users, not a universal replacement for Apple’s tools. iOpenPod author’s post.
Rockbox changes the iPod’s firmware
Rockbox is an optional firmware replacement, not simply another sync application. The Associated Press reports that it can enable music management without iTunes and support high-resolution lossless files. Compatibility depends on the exact iPod model, and the cited article is not a complete current compatibility list. Check model-specific support before making a firmware change. Check that the cable fits the iPod’s connector and the computer’s port; there is no single connector that applies to every iPod.

On Windows, confirm both Apple Devices and Apple Music are installed, and that you selected the iPod in Apple Devices.

If the computer proposes replacing device content, cancel until you have checked what the prompt will remove.

For third-party software or Rockbox, verify support for the specific model and firmware rather than relying on a broad “iPod compatible” claim.
