You can add music to an iPhone without erasing its library, but first check how its music is managed: Apple’s cloud-based Sync Library and computer syncing are separate methods. Before changing settings, back up your music library and avoid confirming Erase and Sync unless you intend to replace the selected type of content on the iPhone.
Choose the right way to add music
The best method depends on whether you want music available across devices, want to transfer selected music from a computer, or simply need to download a purchase.

Use Sync Library for cloud access across devices
Sync Library is Apple’s cloud-based option for keeping music available across devices. It requires an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription. Sign in with the same Apple Account on each device and enable Sync Library in the music settings. Turning off Sync Library removes Apple Music songs from the iPhone, while purchased or computer-synced music remains. If you are trying to preserve the current library, do not switch this setting off without understanding that distinction. Apple Support
Manually sync music from a computer
Manual syncing transfers music selected from a computer rather than making the library available through Sync Library. Apple’s instructions use Music on macOS 10.15 or later, iTunes on macOS 10.14 or earlier, and iTunes on Windows. On Windows, Apple describes choosing either the entire music library or selected artists, albums, genres, and playlists; that workflow requires Sync Library to be off. Apple Support

On a Mac with macOS 10.15 or later
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a USB cable compatible with both devices.
- Open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar.
- Choose Music, select the music-sync options you want, then apply the changes.
Finder may warn that the iPhone is associated with another Apple Music or Apple TV library. Apple says an iPhone can sync with only one such library at a time. If you confirm Erase and Sync, Finder replaces all content of the selected type on the iPhone with content from the connected Mac. Do not confirm unless that replacement is what you want. On Windows or an older Mac
Use iTunes on Windows or macOS 10.14 or earlier. Apple’s Windows guide lets you choose the entire library or specific artists, albums, genres, and playlists. Its documented workflow requires Sync Library to be off. If the iPhone is associated with a different Apple Music or Apple TV library, do not assume that the second computer’s library will merge with the first: Apple documents a one-library-at-a-time limit and warns that Erase and Sync replaces the selected content type. Download music you bought from the iTunes Store
If the music is an iTunes Store purchase, you can buy it from the iTunes Store or download a previous purchase to an authorized computer or device. Apple’s iPhone guide says a purchased item can be permanently downloaded to a compatible device. This is distinct from syncing a computer’s library. Apple iPhone User Guide

Removing a downloaded song from the iPhone does not remove it from the library on your other devices. That can free space on the phone while leaving the library item available elsewhere. By contrast, turning off Sync Library removes Apple Music songs from the iPhone; purchased or synced music remains. Apple Support
