How to Switch VPN Providers Without Losing Your Privacy

Switch VPNs safely by preparing the replacement before ending the old connection, checking kill-switch behavior, auditing DNS and IPv6 settings, and verifying the new tunnel before cancellation.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can usually change VPN providers without exposing your IP by overlapping the two services: keep the existing VPN connected, install and configure the replacement, verify its routing and leak protection, and cancel the old subscription only after the new tunnel works. A brief exposure is still possible if a connection drops during the change, so treat the handover as a staged migration rather than a one-click swap.

Why a VPN change can create a privacy gap

A VPN protects traffic only while its tunnel is established and the device is routing the traffic through it. Uninstalling the old app first, signing out before the replacement is ready, or changing network settings while disconnected can leave ordinary traffic using your internet provider’s connection. Your public IP can then be visible to websites, and DNS requests can go to a resolver you did not intend to use.

The safest sequence is therefore simple: choose the replacement, keep the old connection available, install the new app, configure its safeguards, connect it, test it, and then end the old service. This reduces avoidable downtime but cannot guarantee that every transition on every device will be exposure-free. A laptop changing Wi-Fi networks, a phone switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data, or an app crash can still interrupt a tunnel.

How do I switch VPN providers without exposing my IP?

  1. Select the replacement before changing the old service. Read the current privacy policy and note what account, diagnostic, and connection data it says it collects, why it collects it, and how long it retains it. Confirm support for your operating systems, browser extensions, router or streaming device if relevant, and the protocol you intend to use. Find platform-specific information about the kill switch, DNS routing, and IPv6 handling. Treat feature names as claims to check, not proof of behavior.
  2. Keep the old VPN subscription and connection available. Do not uninstall it or disable its protection yet. Download the replacement only from its official website or your device’s recognized app store. Create the account, use a unique password, and turn on available account-security controls such as multifactor authentication. Account credentials are your responsibility; OpenVPN’s legal materials, for example, state that customers must secure their authentication details.
  3. Install the replacement on every device that needs it. Sign in while the old tunnel remains active. If the provider offers separate desktop, mobile, browser, or router clients, install only the components you need and check that each one supports the settings described in its documentation.
  4. Configure protection before routine browsing. Turn on the replacement’s kill switch, network lock, or equivalent. Read what it blocks on your platform: some implementations stop all traffic until reconnection, while others cover only selected applications or require an always-on mode. Do not assume that a setting with the same label works identically across providers.
  5. Connect the replacement and perform leak checks. Confirm that the public IP changes to the VPN endpoint, DNS requests follow the intended path, and IPv6 traffic is either tunneled or deliberately disabled according to the provider’s design. Temporarily interrupt the tunnel only in a controlled test, then confirm that ordinary traffic is blocked if the kill switch is supposed to provide that behavior.
  6. End the previous service only after the checks pass. Record its renewal date, purchase channel, cancellation route, refund conditions, and account-deletion procedure. Canceling recurring billing and deleting an account are often separate actions. The exact process depends on the provider, app store, payment method, and jurisdiction.

What to evaluate before choosing the replacement

A privacy policy and a feature page are starting points for comparison. Look for dated, independent evidence that explains which app versions, operating systems, servers, and settings were measured. A favorable policy cannot establish how an outage is handled in a particular client, and an old measurement cannot certify a current release.

Decision area Questions to answer Why it affects the handover
Data practices What account and connection information is collected; the purpose and retention period; whether an audit or other independent verification exists and exactly what it covered. You need to understand the new provider’s exposure before transferring your trust and account data.
Outage behavior Is a kill switch or network lock available on your platform? Is it enabled by default? Does it block every connection, only selected apps, or only traffic while the client is running? Different implementations determine whether a dropped tunnel becomes an IP exposure.
DNS and IPv6 Does the app supply its own DNS resolver? How does it handle custom, browser-level, encrypted, or device-level private DNS? Does it tunnel IPv6, disable it, or leave it outside the tunnel? Unmatched settings can send name lookups or IPv6 packets outside the VPN.
Coverage and usability Are all required devices supported? Is the desired protocol available? Can protection remain enabled without breaking local networks, work services, or required applications? A technically strong service is a poor replacement if it cannot protect the device or workflow you actually use.
Exit terms When does the old plan renew? Where was it purchased? What are its cancellation, refund, and deletion rules? Knowing the terms prevents an unwanted renewal after the technical migration is complete.

Install the new VPN while the old one is still active

Desktop computers

Leave the old client connected, download the replacement from its official source, and install it without removing the existing client. Two VPN applications can coexist, but do not connect both tunnels at once unless the providers explicitly support that arrangement; competing virtual adapters and routes can produce failures that look like leaks. After installation, open the replacement’s settings before visiting sensitive sites.

Phones and tablets

Install the new app over the current connection. Mobile operating systems generally permit only one VPN profile to control traffic at a time, so add the new profile but do not activate it until you are ready to test. Check whether the operating system’s always-on VPN or “block connections without VPN” option still points to the old profile; update it only after the replacement is connected and its behavior is understood.

Routers and other network gateways

A router migration can affect every device on the network. Save the old configuration, confirm that you can reach the router locally, and schedule the change when you have an alternative connection for recovery. Verify the router’s default route, DNS addresses, IPv6 settings, and fail-closed option before reconnecting household or work devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure the settings that determine whether traffic can escape

Kill switch or network lock

The purpose of a kill switch is to stop ordinary internet traffic when the VPN tunnel disappears. Labels and implementations vary. Mullvad’s official security help page describes its app this way: “With the Mullvad VPN app, all Internet traffic is automatically blocked until either the VPN connection is reestablished or you disconnect from or quit the app.” That statement applies to that app, not to every service.

Some clients provide a network-lock mode that remains active after the app window closes; others stop protecting when the process quits, when a user-approved local network is selected, or when split tunneling excludes an application. Read the replacement provider’s documentation for your operating system and test the exact state you plan to use.

Default routing and split tunneling

Check whether the app routes all traffic through the tunnel or excludes specified applications, local addresses, or streaming services. A browser excluded by split tunneling will reveal its normal public IP even while another application is protected. Review per-app rules, trusted-network exceptions, and any setting that allows local-area-network access before relying on the connection.

DNS configuration

DNS settings can exist in several places: the VPN client, the operating system, the browser’s secure-DNS feature, a private-DNS hostname on a phone, or a manually entered resolver on the router. Remove obsolete custom entries or reconcile them exactly as the replacement provider instructs. Proton warns that manually configured third-party DNS and encrypted DNS can interfere with its app’s own DNS protections; the same kind of conflict can occur with other clients.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IPv6 behavior

Do not infer IPv6 protection from IPv4 results. The replacement may tunnel IPv6, disable it locally, or support it only on certain platforms. If the provider’s documentation is unclear, test an IPv6-capable connection and inspect the result. If your network has no usable IPv6 path, disabling IPv6 according to your operating system’s guidance may prevent an unintended route, but do not change settings blindly on a managed or work device.

How to check for DNS leaks after changing VPNs

  1. Connect only the replacement VPN and note the endpoint or server shown in its client.
  2. Use a reputable IP and DNS leak-testing page that reports the public address and the DNS resolvers observed. Compare the result with the provider’s documented resolver or expected network.
  3. Repeat the check after changing from Wi-Fi to cellular data, reconnecting the tunnel, and restarting the device if those are normal parts of your use. A single result describes that device and moment; it is not an audit of every server or future software release.
  4. Check IPv6 separately if your network and test service support it. An unchanged IPv6 address or resolver indicates that traffic may be bypassing the tunnel.
  5. For a controlled kill-switch test, start a non-sensitive page or a command that makes a harmless network request, then use the client’s documented disconnect or temporarily disable the network interface. The request should fail while the tunnel is down if the setting promises full blocking. Restore the connection immediately and avoid performing this test during banking, work, or other sensitive activity.

If DNS results show your home or mobile provider, inspect browser secure DNS, operating-system private DNS, router settings, and split-tunneling exclusions before assuming the VPN itself is defective. If IPv6 escapes while IPv4 is protected, follow the provider’s platform instructions rather than mixing settings from another client.

What the VPNalyzer measurements show—and what they do not

The VPNalyzer paper by Reethika Ramesh, Leonid Evdokimov, Diwen Xue, and Roya Ensafi was presented at the Network and Distributed System Security Symposium in 2022. Its broad measurements covered “230 experiments from 80 unique VPN providers.” In the paper’s tested set, tunnel-failure traffic leaks appeared in 26 providers, DNS leaks during tunnel failure in eight, and IPv6 traffic leaks in five.

A separate custom secure-configuration case study of 39 top providers found traffic leaks in 10 providers; six of those providers had a kill-switch feature enabled. These are historical results from the configurations and software examined at that time, not a current ranking or a claim that a named provider is unsafe today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The authors caution: “There is no standard jargon for these features, and the names and capabilities of simple settings are often exaggerated by VPN providers.” That is why a dated measurement, the platform details, and the exact configuration matter more than a badge or marketing label.

Will my internet be unprotected while I change VPNs?

It can be, but careful sequencing minimizes the chance. Keeping the old tunnel active while installing the replacement avoids the most common self-created gap. The moment of switching connections still carries risk: the old tunnel may drop before the new one is active, a mobile network may change state, or a client may restart. A functioning kill switch on the active client should block ordinary traffic during its outage, but only if that implementation covers your platform and is enabled correctly.

Do I need to uninstall my old VPN before installing a new one?

No. Leaving the old application installed until the replacement has passed its checks is usually safer. Remove the old client afterward if it creates route conflicts, launches automatically, or retains profiles you no longer want. Before uninstalling, turn off its always-on or block-without-VPN setting if the operating system still associates that setting with the old profile; otherwise the new client may be prevented from connecting.

Canceling, refunds, and account deletion

Technical success does not automatically stop billing. Check whether the old plan was purchased directly, through a mobile app store, or through another reseller, because the cancellation route follows that channel. Note the renewal deadline and any refund window. If you want personal data removed, look for a separate account-deletion request and save confirmation; canceling recurring payment may leave the account open. Provider terms and jurisdiction control the exact result, so use the old provider’s current instructions.

Common failure modes and recovery

The new app connects but websites show the old IP

Disconnect and reconnect the tunnel, then check split-tunneling rules, browser proxy settings, and whether the browser was excluded from VPN routing. Verify that another VPN profile is not still active at the operating-system level.

DNS tests show unexpected resolvers

Review browser secure DNS, device private DNS, router resolver entries, and manually configured third-party DNS. Return conflicting settings to automatic or to the replacement provider’s documented values, then reconnect and test again.

Internet stops when the new app connects

A network lock may be working as designed while the tunnel cannot establish. Check credentials, protocol selection, captive-portal login, firewall permissions, and the selected server. If you need temporary access to sign in to a Wi-Fi portal, follow the provider’s documented procedure rather than disabling protection casually.

IPv6 works outside the tunnel

Check whether the provider supports IPv6 on your platform and whether the operating system has an active IPv6 interface. Apply the provider’s recommended tunnel or disablement setting, then repeat an IPv6-specific test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both clients interfere with one another

Keep only one VPN connected. If route or adapter conflicts remain after the migration, export any needed settings, uninstall the old client, restart the device, and confirm that the replacement’s profile is the only active one.

Final handover checklist

  • Replacement privacy policy and retention terms reviewed.
  • Required devices, protocols, and applications supported.
  • Unique account password and available security controls enabled.
  • Kill switch or network lock configured for the correct platform.
  • Default routing and split-tunnel exceptions checked.
  • Custom, browser, device, and router DNS settings reconciled.
  • IPv6 behavior understood and tested.
  • Public IP, DNS path, and controlled outage behavior verified.
  • Old renewal, cancellation, refund, and deletion terms recorded.
  • Old service canceled only after the replacement passed the checks.
