Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To change every page in a Word document, choose Layout > Size and select Letter or A4. To change only part of the document, put that portion in its own section and change the paper size for that section. Either way, check Print Preview afterward: a different page size can change pagination and line wrapping, especially around tables, images, and carefully positioned content.
Choose the method that matches the pages you want to change
| Method | Scope | Section break needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Change paper size for the document | Every page | No |
| Change paper size for one portion | Only the section you target | Yes |
Letter and A4 are different page formats, not cosmetic alternatives. Use the size required by the printer, recipient, or submission guidelines. If the document has a mix of page sizes, use sections rather than changing the whole file.

Change the paper size for the whole document
- Open the document in Word and select Layout > Size.
- Choose Letter or A4.
- Open Print Preview and review the pages before printing or sharing the file.
The page dimensions can alter where text wraps and where pages break. Pay particular attention to tables, images, headers and footers, and content positioned near page edges. If something shifts, correct the layout in the document and check the preview again.

Change paper size for only one section
Microsoft describes section breaks as a way to change page layout or formatting for part of a document. The following workflow uses a section break before and after the portion whose paper size should differ.
#1 Best Overall
- 1 ream (500 sheets) of 8.5 x 11 white copier and printer paper for home or office use
- Multipurpose letter size copy paper works with laser/inkjet printers, copiers and fax machines
- Smooth 20lb weight paper for consistent ink and toner distribution; dries quickly and resists paper jams
- Bright white paper (92 GE; 104 Euro) offers great contrast for crisp printing and vivid color
- Virgin copy paper providing professional quality results; acid-free to prevent yellowing
- Place the cursor where the differently sized portion should begin.
- Choose Layout > Breaks, then select Next Page if the new section should start on the following page, or Continuous if it should begin on the same page. Microsoft identifies Continuous as useful for changes such as columns. See Microsoft’s instructions for inserting a section break.
- Click in the new section, then open the Page Setup controls and set its paper size to Letter or A4. Word’s exact dialog path can vary by platform; apply the setting to the intended section rather than the entire document. Microsoft’s guidance for section-specific layout changes is at Use section breaks to change the layout or formatting in one section.
- At the end of the portion, insert another section break so the following content is separated from it. Check the size and layout in that following section as well.
- Review the affected pages in Print Preview.
A section break marks the boundary for formatting changes; placing it at the wrong point can affect more pages than intended. If you need a new section-specific layout change but cannot insert a section break, use the desktop Word application: Word for the web cannot add section breaks, according to Microsoft’s section-break guidance.
Fix an unexpected blank page before removing anything
A blank page can result from a section break, including a Next Page, Odd Page, or Even Page break. First show formatting marks and inspect the break type and surrounding section boundaries. Microsoft cautions that deleting a section break can change formatting; removing one blindly may alter the layout of pages around it. See Microsoft’s guidance on deleting a blank page.
