To switch keyboards on Android, open a text field, bring up the keyboard, then use the keyboard selector—often a Globe icon—to choose an enabled keyboard. To return to Gboard, touch and hold the Globe control and tap Gboard. If it is not listed, enable it in Android’s on-screen keyboard settings.
Switch to another keyboard or back to Gboard
- Open an app with a place to type and tap the text field.
- When the keyboard appears, tap its keyboard selector, commonly shown as a Globe icon, or use the keyboard-selection control available on your device.
- Choose the keyboard you want. To return to Gboard, Google’s documented method is to touch and hold the Globe control, then tap Gboard. See Google’s Gboard troubleshooting instructions.
If the keyboard selector or its icon is not visible, check your device’s keyboard settings. On many Android devices, the relevant controls are under Settings → System → Keyboard → On-screen keyboard, though the labels and path vary. Search Settings for “keyboard” if those menus do not match your phone.

If the keyboard you want is missing
First make sure the keyboard app is installed. Then open the on-screen keyboard settings and enable it. Return to a text field and select it from the keyboard switcher. Installing an app alone may not make it available for typing until it is enabled in those settings.

Changing Gboard’s language is different from switching keyboards
If you want to type in another language but keep using Gboard, you do not need to choose a different keyboard app. Configure the language in Gboard, then touch and hold the space bar to switch among the languages you have set up. Google explains the setup in its guide to typing in a different language.

Make Gboard easier to use
Switching apps may not solve the problem if the difficulty is locating keys, reaching them, or getting accurate text. Gboard includes settings and input options that may help:
- Adjust the feedback: In Gboard Preferences, change the keyboard theme, keypress sound, or vibration. Haptics and sound can also depend on device-level settings. See Google’s Gboard settings instructions.
- Try Glide typing: Slide a finger across letters to enter a word instead of tapping each key.
- Use voice typing: Dictate text rather than entering it by touch. Talk-to-text does not support every language; Google’s Gboard troubleshooting page covers voice input and other common issues.
Choose an input method that fits the difficulty

These options solve different problems: voice typing enters text, while Voice Access controls the device. A physical keyboard can help if you prefer physical keys, but it does not select a different on-screen keyboard app.

When settings or controls do not match
Android menu names, keyboard controls, and accessibility features can differ by manufacturer, version, and market. Google notes that specific navigation and feature names may vary by market and device in its Android accessibility overview. Search Settings for “keyboard,” “TalkBack,” “Voice Access,” or “Switch Access” to find the controls available on your device.
