Before a trip beyond cellular coverage, check whether your exact phone supports satellite emergency features at your destination, update it, and practice the available demo. If an emergency happens, try the local emergency number first; if the call cannot connect, use the phone’s supported satellite SOS workflow. A satellite feature is not guaranteed: it depends on the device, location, setup and a clear view of the sky.
Check whether your phone can reach emergency services by satellite
Satellite SOS is not available on every phone or in every location. Confirm your exact model, compatible software and destination coverage using the manufacturer’s current information before you travel. Apple lists iPhone 14 or later for its satellite features; Google’s Pixel Satellite SOS is limited to supported models and locations. These features are not a general replacement for cellular service.

- Apple’s satellite feature guide explains supported iPhone features and availability.
- Google’s Pixel Satellite SOS instructions describe supported devices, locations and the emergency process.
Availability can differ by feature: emergency SOS, satellite messaging, location sharing and roadside assistance are separate services with their own requirements. Do not assume that a phone capable of one can use all the others.

Update and configure it while you have a connection
Install compatible software before leaving. Apple specifically recommends updating iOS before going somewhere without cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Keep the phone charged and accessible; a power bank can extend battery runtime, but it cannot create a satellite connection.
#1 Best Overall
- Global satellite messaging: Stay connected beyond cell coverage, use ZOLEO with your smartphone to transmit text messages and e-mails over the Iridium satellite network, cellular or Wi-Fi using the lowest-cost network available (service plan required)
- Emergency SOS: Send an SOS alert with your GPS location to 24/7 emergency monitoring center if something goes wrong, or access Medical Assist for non-emergency help
- Optional Travel Risk Management Coverage: Feel more secure wherever you go with a Field Rescue Membership from Global Rescue. Affordably priced, this travel risk management add-on offers immediate medical coverage for safe extraction and transportation to the nearest capable medical facility.
- Dedicated SMS number: An assigned ZOLEO SMS number and email enables contacts to reach out directly when you're off the grid
- Check-in: Send unlimited check-ins via the ZOLEO device or app, included in your plan
Set up emergency information and practice
On iPhone, set up Medical ID and emergency contacts, then use the Emergency SOS demo while connected. The demo helps you learn the interface but does not contact emergency services. Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite guide explains setup and the demo.
Check separate messaging and location features
If you intend to use iPhone Messages via satellite, enable iMessage and confirm the SIM is active before losing coverage. This is for communicating with friends and family, not contacting emergency services; Apple directs users to Emergency SOS via satellite for emergency help. See Apple’s Messages via satellite setup instructions.

- Lightweight SOS satellite communicator uses the global Iridium satellite network so you can stay connected without cell coverage (active satellite subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Explore with peace of mind knowing you can trigger an interactive SOS message with location coordinates to Garmin Response℠, a 24/7-staffed international coordination center, for help in an emergency (active satellite subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Exchange photos, texts and voice messages without cell service; taking and sending photos requires pairing your inReach device with your compatible smartphone by using the Garmin Messenger app (active satellite subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Rugged design features a high-resolution and scratch-resistant color touchscreen; can withstand impact, extreme weather and harsh temperatures (IP67 water rating)
- Internal, rechargeable lithium battery supports up to 350 hours with 10-minute inReach tracking and up to 95 hours in performance messaging mode
For iPhone satellite location sharing in Find My, set the iPhone as the location-sharing device, turn on Share My Location and add the contacts you want to reach before leaving coverage. Find My location sharing is distinct from emergency SOS. Apple’s satellite feature guidance covers the setup requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare any dedicated satellite communicator
If you carry a Garmin inReach for frequent remote travel, activate its service and test the device before departure. Garmin says interactive SOS and satellite messaging require an active subscription; its inReach SOS guidance says an account and satellite subscription must be active before SOS can be used. A communicator is a dedicated device, not an app that turns an ordinary phone into a satellite SOS device.

What to do if an emergency happens without cellular service
On a supported iPhone
- Try calling 911 or the local emergency service first. If the call does not connect, begin Emergency SOS via satellite.
- Answer the on-screen emergency questionnaire and follow the connection directions.
- Hold the phone naturally with a clear line of sight to the sky. Apple says you do not need to raise it overhead.
When cellular service is unavailable, iPhone may show “SOS only” and attempt to route emergency calls through other networks if available. That status does not mean satellite SOS is active. Follow the satellite SOS workflow if the emergency call fails. Apple’s official instructions explain the process.
On a Pixel with Satellite SOS available
- Dial the local emergency number.
- If there is no network, select Satellite SOS when prompted.
- Answer the emergency questionnaire and follow the positioning prompts.
Google says connection and response times vary with network availability, location and site conditions; it does not provide a fixed response-time guarantee. Follow the prompts on the supported phone rather than assuming these steps apply to other Android models. See Google’s Satellite SOS instructions.

- Small, rugged, lightweight satellite communicator enables two-way text messaging even in areas with no cell coverage (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Send two-way messages globally; easily text back and forth directly with friends via the Garmin Messenger app, even when you’re out of cellular coverage. (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices.)
- Group messaging via the Garmin Messenger smartphone app lets you share your adventures with multiple contacts simultaneously — and have group text chats with friends and family
- Check in with contacts directly by using preset messages that do not count toward your allotted text messages (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Share your GPS location (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
Understand what can prevent a satellite connection
The phone needs a usable view of the sky. Apple warns that foliage, hills, canyons and tall structures can obstruct a connection. Garmin likewise requires a clear sky view for inReach transmission. Move, if it is safe to do so, toward a more open area and follow the device’s on-screen directions; a satellite feature cannot guarantee a connection or a particular response time.
Keep the emergency channel distinct from other satellite functions: ordinary messages to friends, Find My location sharing and roadside assistance are not interchangeable with emergency SOS. Check the exact feature’s setup and destination availability before relying on it.
When a phone is not enough
For frequent trips where cellular service is absent, consider a dedicated satellite communicator alongside the phone. Confirm its coverage, activate the required subscription and test it before departure. Garmin’s inReach support guidance makes clear that SOS use depends on an active account and subscription.
