How do I switch internet providers without losing service? Check that the new provider can install service at your exact address, order and schedule the replacement first, then coordinate the old service’s end date with the new connection’s activation. A brief interruption can still happen; no provider or switching process guarantees zero downtime everywhere. The cancellation rules, protections, and best sequence depend on your country, providers, and contract.
1. Check availability and the offer at your address
Do not assume a provider serves every home in a town or neighborhood. Availability, connection technology, and advertised speeds can vary by address. In the United States, search your street address on the FCC National Broadband Map to see provider-reported fixed broadband technologies and maximum advertised download and upload speeds. The map supports challenges if its information appears inaccurate. Confirm installability and the specific offer directly with the prospective provider before cancelling your current service.

Compare more than the headline monthly price. Check the advertised download and upload speeds, installation and activation costs, introductory pricing and what it changes to, contract length, price-change terms, and early-exit charges. Before placing an order, find out when your minimum term ends, whether an early termination charge or balance is due, how cancellation works, and whether the provider expects rented equipment back. Ask which services will end or move if broadband is bundled with a landline, TV, or another service. A broadband switch may not automatically cancel every part of a bundle.

Switching procedures and charges differ by jurisdiction. In Canada, the CRTC says a new provider can request transfer and cancellation, but fees under the existing contract may still apply. In the UK, Ofcom says applicable charges should be disclosed through One Touch Switch; if you manage the switch independently, cancellation and any notice period may need to be arranged separately. Check the terms that apply to your own account.
3. Order the new service and coordinate the handoff
Contact the new provider before ending the old service. Ask for the earliest suitable installation or activation date, what you need to do, whether an engineer visit is required, and whether the network or technology change affects the installation. Confirm the appointment window and how to contact the provider if activation does not work.

In the UK: use One Touch Switch for a normal switch
Ofcom’s guidance, last updated 25 August 2026, says to contact the chosen provider and give it your current provider and service details. The new provider manages a normal One Touch Switch, can arrange a preferred switch date, and the old service should cease once the new one works. The current provider sends information including any applicable charges.
In Canada and Ireland: confirm the local provider-led process
The CRTC recommends asking the new Canadian provider to transfer services. ComReg’s Irish guidance also says the new provider should lead the switching process. These arrangements are not universal: do not assume a U.S. provider follows the UK or Irish process, or that the same cancellation steps apply everywhere.

If you want both services temporarily
You can ask whether installation and testing before cancellation are possible, but an overlap is not guaranteed for every building, network, or provider. Ofcom describes independently managing a UK switch to create an overlap as an option outside One Touch Switch: you arrange cancellation with the old provider yourself, and you may pay for both services during the overlap. Get the dates, cancellation requirements, and costs confirmed before choosing this route.
4. Set up and test the new connection
Follow the provider’s activation instructions and connect the supplied equipment. Ofcom says a new broadband setup is likely to include a new router. Phones, tablets, smart speakers, and other devices may need their Wi-Fi details updated. If the new router supports it, reusing the old Wi-Fi network name and password can make reconnection easier; keep the network protected with a strong password.

Do not assume your old router will work with the new service. Ask the provider whether it supplies equipment and whether your existing router is compatible. If an engineer visit or installation work is needed, confirm that before the switchover date.

5. Protect email, phone, and connected devices
Ask whether your provider-branded email account will remain accessible after broadband service ends. If you rely on it, move important logins and contacts to an address you control before the switch. If you have a landline, confirm whether the number is being transferred and whether broadband cancellation affects the phone service. Check separately whether TV or other bundle components need cancellation or a new arrangement.

In Ireland, a move from a traditional PSTN phone line to VoIP can affect alarms, telecare, or other devices that use the old line. Ask the provider and the relevant device or monitoring service how those connections will work after the change.
6. Verify cancellation, final charges, and equipment return
For a UK One Touch Switch, Ofcom says the old service should stop automatically once the new one works, and the old provider must not charge for a notice period after the switchover date. If you arrange an overlap independently, cancellation is separate, so confirm the end date directly. In either case, review the final bill for outstanding charges or a credit rather than assuming the account has settled.
Return rented or provider-owned equipment using the provider’s stated method and by its deadline. ComReg notes that many Irish providers require equipment returns and may charge if equipment is not returned. Requirements vary by provider, so keep the receipt or tracking evidence until the return is acknowledged and any final account issue is resolved.

Do not plan on a guaranteed zero-minute handoff. Ofcom’s UK guidance says a service loss should not last longer than one working day and describes automatic compensation in specified cases, including a loss beyond that period or a missed confirmed service or installation appointment. ComReg’s Irish guidance also says switching problems should not leave customers without service for more than one working day and describes compensation for specified problems. These are jurisdiction-specific protections, not a worldwide guarantee.
The cited regulator guidance does not establish a current, broadly applicable probability of an outage during an ordinary broadband switch. The practical way to reduce risk is to confirm address availability, installation requirements, activation timing, and cancellation handling in advance.
