Save each Gem’s instructions and files separately, import only the personal context you want Claude to remember, then rebuild and test your workflows.
What transfers—and what you need to rebuild
Gemini and Claude handle different kinds of information separately. Claude’s documented import is for memory and useful context: you ask your existing AI to summarize what it knows, then paste that text into Claude. Anthropic’s instructions do not describe importing a Gemini archive, complete conversations, or Gem definitions. Anthropic’s memory import guide was dated September 2, 2026.

Gems are saved instructions for repeatable tasks, and a custom Gem can also include knowledge files. Google documents how to create Gems with a name and instructions, with optional knowledge files in Use Gems in Gemini Apps. Preserve those instructions and files independently; the memory import is not a Gem converter.
1. Inventory your Gemini Gems and recurring prompts
Before changing anything, make a copy of each workflow you rely on. Treat each Gem as a small specification rather than just a name or a short prompt.
#1 Best Overall
- Copy its title, exact instruction text, purpose, required output format, and any examples.
- List knowledge files and save the original files separately.
- Note any Google Workspace connection, other service dependency, or expected tool action.
- Save a representative input and the kind of output you expect, including an edge case if relevant.
This inventory gives you the material to rebuild and check each workflow in Claude. Copying a Gem’s text alone will not carry its attached files or service connections with it.
2. Prepare the context you want Claude to remember
In Gemini, ask it to list useful saved memories and context in one copyable block. Anthropic’s suggested approach covers response preferences, personal details, projects, tools, and other context, and asks that original wording be kept where possible. Review and edit the result before importing it: remove sensitive or outdated information you do not want transferred.

Keep this export focused on information Claude should remember across conversations. Put task instructions, reference documents, and workflow-specific examples in your separate inventory instead of treating them as personal memory.

- Open Claude on the web or in Claude Desktop and go to Settings > Memory.
- Select Start import, then paste the context block you prepared.
- Submit it with Add to memory.
- Review the individual memory entries Claude extracts. Correct omissions or misinterpretations and remove anything you do not want retained.
Anthropic says this import is available on Free, Pro, Max, and Team plans on the web and Claude Desktop. Its guide distinguishes the newer Settings > Memory experience from a legacy Settings > Capabilities memory interface; some Team and Enterprise organizations may still see the legacy experience. Follow the labels shown in your account. See Anthropic’s memory import and export instructions for the current flow.

4. Rebuild each workflow in Claude
Use the Gemini inventory to recreate one workflow at a time in the Claude feature that best fits the task. Add the relevant reference files where appropriate, and retain the original Gemini prompt while you refine the replacement. The official vendor guidance documents memory import and Gem creation, not automatic Gem-to-Claude conversion; rebuilding is a manual step.
For each replacement, test a normal task and an edge case. Compare the result with your saved Gemini example, checking the output structure, tone, source handling, and expected tool actions. Adjust the instructions or supporting material where the results differ. Keep an offline copy of the original prompts and files until the Claude versions meet your needs.

Do not mistake Google’s reverse import for a Gemini-to-Claude tool
Google also documents importing material from other AI platforms into Gemini, including a Claude export path. That feature moves in the opposite direction; it does not establish a Gemini importer in Claude. Google’s eligibility details apply to its Gemini import feature: it requires a personal Google account and users aged 18 or older, and is unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland, and UK, as well as in certain Gemini surfaces. The details are in Google’s import-from-other-AI-platforms guide.
